ROLE OF TEACHER Towards Students 1. Teaching The main role of teacher is teaching.

Basically, when people hear the word teaching, the first image that comes to mind is the picture of an adult standing in front a group of students and presenting academic content. Teaching is far more complex than these first impressions suggest, however. Does this qualify as teaching? According to the several of the great contemporary thinkers in education, it does not. Elliot Eisner (1994) defines teaching as a set of acts performed by people we call teachers as they attempt to foster learning. According to National Philosophy of Education, the student has to possess the three basic skills which are reading, writing and arithmetic. It is also aim the students to always strives to acquire and develop true knowledge and possess creative, critical and reflective thinking skills. Besides that, its objective is for the students to willing to share knowledge with others and the environment. This is where the process of teaching started. To achieve all these aims, the students need to understand what have they learnt. One simple way to define understanding is to say : students understand something when it has meaning for them or when it makes sense to them. The performance view of understanding espoused by the Harvard Project Zero team is that understanding is the ability to think and act flexibly with that one knows. To make sure the students understand the topic, the teacher should come out with the variety style of teaching method. There are many activities that the teacher can do such as reading articles in newspaper, write imaginative writing, drawing diagrams, creating brainstorms, role play and improvisations, quizzes, debates, games and warm ups, practical experiments and drawing, modeling and painting. These activities will help student to expand their ideas and develop the creative, critical and reflective thinking. Teaching is not only giving out information, but it is also nurture the students to think differently and out of the box. The teacher must try their best for the students to get the intellectual element and not only apply the knowledge to their own self but to other people too. The teacher need to guide the students and give them space to express their opinion so that they will not feel alienated or rejected by the teachers. If they did wrong, the teacher should correct them and not put the blame on them. With these strategies, the students will feel more confident about themselves and at last we can reach the aim.

2. The teacher as a role model A role model is a person who inspires and encourages us to strive for greatness, liveto ourfullest potential and see the best in ourselves. A role model is someone we admire and someone we aspire to be like. We learn through them, through their commitment to excellence and through their ability to make us realize our own personal growth. We look to them for advice and guidance. Other than the adults the pupils come into contact with in their immediate family, the teacher is the next important person whom they come into contact with outside their home. Undoubtedly, the teacher plays a pivotal role in the life of the pupils in the classroom. Teachers are expected to be exemplary in words, actions and decorum in order to earn the attention, respect and co-operation of pupils. Pupils tend to look up to their teacher as someone to follow, imitate and emulate because they look up to their teacher, by virtue of the fact that she/he is their teacher. They also respect the teacher for being older, being their senior and they look up to teacher for guidance. They also look up to teacher because they believe that the teacher is the expert, processing the knowledge that they wish to acquire. Some pupils are more impressionable and are more influenced by their teachers, including the teachers manner of attire. This is partly the reason why there is a dress code for teachers. Teachers are expected to conform to a dress code In view of the fact that a teacher is a role model for the pupils, an important implication is that the teacher should be the best possible example, that is, to be an exemplar. This means that the teacher have to act as she/he will like them to act, and speak as she/he will like them speak. The teacher need to be conscious that she/he is being watched all the time, both in school and even out school. These are exactly follow one of the elements in the Philosophy of Teacher Education that is a teacher should have personal well-being. She/ he should have good personality such as well-mannered, disciplined, morally good and so on. Much of what students learn from their greatest teachers is not detailed on a syllabus. Teachers who help us grow as people are responsible for imparting some of lifes most important lessons. During their initial school years, students encounter, perhaps for the first time, other children of the same age and begin to form some of their first friendships. As a teacher, you will show your students how to become independent and form their own relationships, you will carefully guide them and intervene when necessary. School is as much a place of social learning as academic learning, and this is true, not only in our early years of education, but all the way through college. Though a teachers influence on the social sphere of school lessens as students mature, those early lessons still have an effect on how they will interact with others in the future.

3. The teacher as an assessor A teacher cannot just teach a lesson and then move on. Teachers must assess each student's growth and mastery of the lesson objectives. Expert teachers are able to recognize patterns in the test results of their students and then plan their lessons to meet their students' needs. Teachers draw a distinction between assessment and evaluation. Assessment refers to the tools and resulting measurements. Evaluation is using those assessments to find the value in certain events. Teachers use assessment to determine where the child is in the learning process and what teaching processes have worked. Teachers assess in many ways. Assessments need to be authentic. In other words, the assessment must measure the goal stated and be appropriate for the method employed. Traditional assessments include tests, quizzes, essays, reports and the like. Some educators distinguish between traditional and alternative assessments. Alternative assessments in some circles refer to anything that is not a multiple-choice test. Tests are the most often-used assessment tool. Most experienced teachers use a variety of assessment tools. Teachers should inform students of the type of assessment tool to be used. Recently a great deal has been said of portfolios. Portfolios are great assessment tools if used properly. They are also very demanding on the teacher and student. Creating a viable portfolio rubric may take several years. There is much published on the use of the portfolio. Before venturing into the portfolio the teacher needs to carefully investigate the available ideas and options. Some schools have demanded portfolio assessment. Guidelines are sometimes vague and misleading. Assessments need to be clear and distinct. Reliable assessments are consistent when the same conditions are repeated. The teacher must teach the same material in the same way with the test being offered at the same time. As a result all variables are controlled. Varying one variable while control all others can then be used to determine the effectiveness of the altered item. Using a different approach to presenting a lesson, can be tested by using the same assessment as long as nothing else varies. Tests constructed by book publishers are great for appearance but they are rarely valid. Effective teachers use these tests as source material for classroom testing. The assessment will produce competent Malaysia citizens as stated in National Philosophy of Education. The students will possess expertise and competencies because they want to be the best among the best. They will also able to execute task effectively and efficiently from the test given.

4. The teacher as physical educator The physical educator is to provide maximum physical activity time within the class period, teach skills and activities that transfer into physical activity outside of physical education class, motivate children to be physically active, and take the role of physical activity director for the school. The physical education teacher has unique responsibilities in the school physical activity program to ensure that students are physically active within the physical education class. The physical education teacher also has the responsibility to help direct and guide opportunities for physical activity within the school outside the physical education class. Physical education programs have the responsibility to teach skills that students will need to participate in physical activity outside of the physical education class and skills they will need for a lifetime of physical activity. Skills learned in physical education class transfer to skills used in a childs play. Another role of the physical educator is to encourage and motivate children to be active. There are many ways to do this, including promoting community activities, assigning physical activity homework or home fun, showing an interest in the out-of-class physically activity in which children participate, and leading by example. The physical activities are important and it stated in the National Philosophy of Education in the physical element for the students to be aware of the importance of good health. It is also to develop technical, manipulative and social talents and skills. They get the chance to show their talents.. In the present times, all schools believe in organizing sports event in schools in order to provide better opportunities to the students. In this way students get encouragement to decide which sport they are good in. Sports days are also a big event of entertainment for the students and teachers of the school. As the result, the students can use physical fitness skills for the benefit of society later on. The sports activity will also complete the holistic and integrated development of the individual because the students are balance in academics and sports. The talents, potentials and abilities do not develop separately ; on the contrary, they are inter-related and coordinated so as not to compete with one another. It is also contribute to the enhancement and development of intellectual, spiritual, emotional and physical. In addition, it helps in developing the individual potentials. Every individual has been blessed by God with hidden talents, potentials and abilities. These should be tapped, nurtures, developed and enhanced. Physical education can offer the individual opportunities to develop his talents, potentials and abilities.

5. Teacher as classroom manager Doyle, (1986) state that the managing of classrooms involves two major task that are to facilitate learning among pupils and to establish order within the classroom so that learning can take place. It is good to remember that classroom management is much more than just maintaining discipline in the classroom. Discipline is necessary and no individual can advance far in society without discipline. Discipline helps to inculcate a sense of responsibility and trustworthiness within the individual and in the school context, discipline is every teachers business, not just that of the d iscipline committee only. The term discipline maybe described as a teacher exercising control over pupils actions and behavior so as to establish order in classroom (Goh,1989). Discipline is but one aspect of classroom management that encompasses whatever the teacher does in the classroom to encourage learning and foster discipline. The intent of classroom management is to create an orderly and supportive environment for learning and for this to happen, discipline must be in place. Learning also partly involves the disciplining of the intellect and it cannot be effected in a classroom that is lacking in discipline, chaotic and disorganized. Classroom management helps in the development of good interpersonal relationships. Besides, it also true that classroom management helps to promote appropriate pupil behavior and eliminate inappropriate ones. A teacher who can handle pupil behavior effectively will be able to contribute to the personal growth of the pupils and socialize them in to the expectations of the classroom and school, and , later on survive in society at large. These criteria complete one of the elements in the National Philosophy of Education which is to produce responsible Malaysian citizens, Through the discipline will produce the trustworthy students and adhere to the countrys law. They will carry out assigned tasks trustingly, sincerely and efficiently. Not only being a responsible Malaysian citizens, it will also produce Malaysian citizens who are capable of achieving personal well-being as they possess strong resilience to face lifes challenges and capable of undergoing lifes challenges. The teacher themselves have done their job according to the Philosophy of Teacher Education by promising individual development. The teacher are playing role is selfdevelopment and pupils holistic development physically, emotionally, spiritually and intellectually.

Towards Parents 1. Teacher as Teachers job does not stopped only at the schools gate. Beside handling the children, the teacher also need to have a good connection with the family to ensure they can cooperate with each other to produce the excellent children. The teacher need to keep parents well-informed about their childrens progress. If the child is weak on a certain subject, the teacher should tell the parents the truth and discuss how they can increase the childs performance. The teacher and parents should take time out to discuss an issue, or a problematic behavior of the children. The teacher also can encourage parents to

promote various diverse interests of their children because each child have different interest and talent. In addition, the teacher need to inform parents about after-school activities like excursions, meetings, as well as detention so that the parents always keep track of their children and know where they are. Besides, the teacher should encourage parent participation in parent-teacher meets so that the parents will know the news about the school. Finally, the teacher need to work with parents for the betterment of their child's future. As stated in the Philosophy of Teacher Education, the teacher need to maintain a united, democratic, progressive and disciplined society. When the teacher is having a good connection with the parents, indirectly, they are contributing to the society too. It is the teachers responsibility as a member of the society to contribute towards nation-building by cooperating with them for a better future for their children. The teacher also need to endeavor so that society can fulfill the nations aspirations. The good connection between parents and teachers also fulfilled the aspiration of National Philosophy of Education that in education is an on-going effort. The acquisition and transfer processes are on-going starting from an early age till death, so to make sure this process happened, teacher really need the contribution from the family too. The teacher cannot check whether the students are studying or not when they are at home, so the parents should play their role too. The continuous education will assist the individual adapt to various types of changes. Schools life and real life are totally different, so hopefully with the collaboration between the teachers and the parents will prepare the children to be strong enough to face any challenges and contribute to the nation.

Towards School Management 1. Teacher as a school principal The first element in a principals role is to administer his school to the best of his ability. According to Ronald F. Campbell, Administration in an educational organization has as its central function the enhancement of teaching and learning To enhance teaching and learning, administration is required to perform three major kinds and activities as follows : (i) discern and influence the development of goals and policies basic to teaching and learning, (ii) to stimulate and facilitate the planning and operation of appropriate programme for teaching and learning, and (iii) produce and manage personnel and material to implement programmes of teaching and learning. As the chief administrator in his school, the principal is expected to become familiar with alternative systems of organizations in other schools and to introduce organizational changes where necessary to improve his own school. Besides that, supervising is one of the basic tasks of a principal. The principal need to supervise to ensure continuity and correlation of the teaching subjects in the school. It is also to assess the ability of teachers with a view to utilizing their talent to its maximum capacity. The principal also want to assess the work of the children whether they progress or otherwise and to analyse the reasons for poor performance so that appropriate solutions can be given. It is also to ensure that all the activities of the school are carried out according to schedule. The supervision is needed to ensure that all the relevant facilities and apparatus in the school are fully used. The principal also need to provide guidance to teachers regarding school work and to encourage them to perform better. Supervision is needed to help the slow learners and to encourage the bright students to advance in their studies. In reaching his decision regarding supervision, a principal might well consider it in the four areas : classroom teaching and learning situations, assessment of students performance, discipline and extra-mural activities. According to the Malaysian Ministry of Education administrative circular No.2 of 1967, a principal of a secondary school is required to teach at least 9 periods a week. His role in teaching should set an example to the rest of staff in school. In view of the aspirations of the National Philosophy of Education the following roles of the principal are of equal importance.

i) To promote national integration and unity; ii) To install the values of Islam; iii) To develop a well-balanced personality of students; iv) To maintain discipline; and v) To establish a conducive school environment. Basically, the role of the principal fulfilled the aspiration of the National Philosophy of Education. One of the elements is belief in and obedience to God. This value is nurtured in schools and it helps the students to admit the existence of God and accept Him as the Creator of Mankind and the universe. It also teach students to be aware that every individual is fully responsible for his deeds and actions and practice all the teachings of the faith professed. One of the role of the principal is to develop a well-balanced personality of students which according to the National Philosophy of Education is Malaysian citizens who can contribute to the harmony and betterment of family, society and nation at large. The implications of this, the student will strive to foster national unity through tolerance, consideration, respect and so on. The students will try to always maintain nations political stability and defend self-dignity, profession, religion, race and country. The other implications are the students will make Rukunegara a practice in daily living and love for country, of course. The principal himself has already fulfilled the Philosophy of Teacher Education by being ready to uphold the nations aspirations and sustains nations cultural heritage.

CONCLUSION Robert Frost once said, There are two kinds of teachers: the kind that fill you with so much quail shot that you can't move, and the kind that just gives you a little prod behind and you jump to the skies. From now on, we can decide which kind of teacher we want to be. Being a teacher is not just standing in front of the class and giving out information, it is more than that. The teacher responsibility is not only towards the students, but also to the parents and society and the school administration. One of the teachers role towards students is to inculcate model behavior and mannerisms by self-example. The teacher also have to prepare long-term teaching programs and daily lessons in accordance with the guidelines of the school's education system. Next, they have to provide activities and materials that engage and challenge the students intellectually. They need to understand and implement the use of information technology in lesson preparation and teaching. Besides, they have to shift between formal and informal methods of teaching, like debates, discussions, practical activities, experiments, projects and excursions. They should plan, set and evaluate grade test, exams and assignments. They also need to supervise student conduct during class, lunchtime and other breaks. Teachers have to understand the diverse background students come from, their strengths, weaknesses and areas of interest. In addition, teachers must enforce discipline by firmly setting classroom rules. They must be ready to adjust teaching styles to meet individual needs of students. The teacher also have responsibilities towards parents and society. The teacher need to keep parents well-informed about their ward's progress. They have to take time out to discuss an issue, or a problematic behavior. The teacher can encourage parents to promote various diverse interests of their children. The teacher also need to inform parents about after-school activities like excursions, meetings, as well as detention. The teacher have to encourage parent participation in parent-teacher meets. Finally, work with parents for the betterment of their child's future. Besides that, the teacher also play an important role in the schools administration. The teacher can be the principal, thus the obligation is more than the normal teacher. The principals have to supervise and guide the school to the excellence.

According to Plato, the teacher should be caring and sensitive to the needs of their pupils. He said that education is a moral entity. Therefore, educators are responsible for the delivery of knowledge based on truth and values. Clearly, Platos stand was reflected in his practice as a teacher. Secondly, teachers need to identify their pupils ability level and limits. Aristotle who is the Greek philosopher would not stand in front of his students whenever he taught. Instead, he preferred to walk up and down to gain the students attention. He also said that The one exclusive sign of thorough knowledge is the power of teaching. Alexander The Great once said I am indebted to my father for living, but to my teacher for living well. That shows how big the scarification made by a teacher. Ralph Waldor Emerson, the United States poet said, The man who can make hard things easy is the educator. Amos Bronson Alcott, the American educator state that The true teacher defends his pupils against his own personal influence. He inspires self-distrust. He guides their eyes from himself to the spirit that quickens him. He will have no disciple. A politician from Indonesia, B. J. Habibie praised the convention attendees who incidentally is educators. According to him, the teacher is a person who serves as a maker of value-added private nation. Through a fairly lengthy explanation, he traces how the teacher makes the students at the school has added value and capable of high competitiveness with other nations. According to him, the precursor of the added value comes from the school institution. Henry Brooks Adams, American historian and journalist also praise the teacher by saying A teacher affects eternity; he can never tell where his influence stops. Besides that, Conficius, a Chinese philosopher once said If you think in terms of a year, plant a seed; if in terms of ten years, plant trees; if in terms of 100 years, teach the people. It is to emphasize how teaching is actually give a lot of implication. The teachers need to prepare themselves to face the challenges. There are a lot of changes that the government has done to make our education system better. Lembaga Peperiksaan Malaysia has introduced School-Based Assessment (SBA) in 2011 to replace our own exam-oriented system. The purpose of SBA is to obtain and analyse information in a systematic way in order to make good decisions. It is also to provide feedback to teachers and school administrators on how much pupils have learnt and mastered according to the achievement bands for each subject. The students will be assessed throughout many activities and there are no more A,B,C,D but they use band instead. These bands from band 1 to band 6 will be the indicator for the students achievement. The teachers role need a little bit

adjustment to follow the new system. Maybe there are many new workloads given, but as a good teacher, it is not a big problem as they can handle it in time. The government also produces a new curriculum to replace KBSR that is The Standardsbased Primary School Curriculum. It is to replace KBSR because KBSR is lack of fun and real learning. It is also lack of focus on listening and speaking skills while it is too focused on reading and writing. When the government implement the KSSR, they want to back to basics. They want to make the learning session is fun, meaningful and purposeful. Teaching is also learnercentred as they will do many activities by their own. The implementation of KSSR brings about certain changes to the curriculum content and practices in the primary school system. The remodelling of curriculum content through the introduction of new subjects, emphases on sound pedagogical approaches and holistic assessment methods are among the initiatives outlined ini KSSR. In line with the NKRA for the Ministry, the curriculum for Stage I primary schooling emphasizes the mastery of the basic 3Rs, reasoning skills, basic ICT, the development of socioemotional, spritual, physical, cognitive, attitudes and values. The discipline of knowledge is categorized into 3 main modules; the core basic module the core thematic module and the elective module. The core basic module contains 6 subject which are Bahasa Malaysia, English, Chinese or Tamil (only for Vernacular Schools), Mathematics, Islamic Education (for Muslim pupils) or Moral Education (for non-muslim pupils) and Physical Education. The core thematic module contains 3 subjects which are Arts and Me, World of Science and Technology and Malaysia Negaraku. The Elective Module contains language subjects such as Chinese, Tamil, Arabic, Iban, Kadazandusun or Semai which schools can choose to offer. The teachers should have the courage and positive thought about all these changes. Maybe there are addition of workloads but remember, it is all for the students who will lead the nation one day. A little sacrificed is needed to make sure our education system is on the right track.

REFLECTION Name : Khairunnisa Sharom I/C No : 930815-01-7032 Alhamdulillah, I managed to finish the assignment with in the time given. A lot of appreciation to Madam Norhasyimah for giving us the right guidance in doing this assignment. Not to forget my partner, Ainur Adhwa Abd Rahman that give the full commitment and cooperation in order to complete the assignment. The title of this assignment is the role of teachers, being a teacher trainee I do not realize that the obligation of being a teacher is really hard until I did this assignment. I gain a lot of new experiences in finishing this assignment. I have read a lot of books to do get information so I can do the assignment according to the guideline. I encounter many problems in doing the assignment and one of it is I did not understand the question of the assignment thoroughly. So I discuss it with my partner. I learnt that it is very important to sit down and discuss with my partner about the assignment. With the discussion, we can decide on how we want to do the assignment. We see the role of teacher is not only teaching, but more than that. Besides that, there are many other assignments that have the same due date, so I really need to reschedule my time so I can finish all assignments on the exact time. Being a teacher is not an easy task. There are several aspects to consider before deciding you are going to be teaching all your life. This profession implies a variety of methods and strategies that must be used according to your students needs and the environment you are immerse in. Sometimes, learning occurs almost instantaneously, and other times it is

acquired only through long, patient study and diligent practice, that is the reason why teaching should be based on vocation and love for teaching. We must back to the basic and realize the main core of successful in one country is education. Solomon Ortiz once said, Education is the key to success in life, and teachers make a lasting impact in the lives of their students. Teacher play an important role in nurturing and developing the students talents and guide them to the right path. Man is what his thoughts make him. Education provides direction to these thoughts. Success is more than just accumulation of material wealth. I believe that success is not a destination but a never ending journey in self-exploration. It is unlocking your true potential to make your life itself a work of art. Success has more than one dimensions to it. Acquiring material wealth is not the only one. To

what degree have you conquered yourself and achieved liberation from wanting and needing things is another indicator of success. Education plays a large role in determining our potential for achieving this success. There are a lot of advantages of being a teacher. Teachers get incredible joy in seeing the difference they make as students gain new insights, become more interested in a subject and learn about themselves. Every day, teachers mold the future through impacting their students views and understandings. Teachers foster creativity, develop character, give students lenses with which to view the world and provide students with the skills they need to reach their potential and lead productive lives. Many individuals are attracted to teaching by a sense of service, because they want to make a clear, tangible difference in the lives of others. As a teacher, you see the fruits of your efforts everyday as you use your intelligence and creativity to help students become excited about and learn about the science in their lives. The job of a teacher is exciting and rewarding. There is less stress involved. This job gives you a platform to connect with inquisitive, young minds and bring a positive change in their lives. As a teacher, you get to play a key role in developing basic learning skills in children, inculcating good values in them, cultivating their minds and teaching them not just lessons from books but lessons of life. At that young age, kids consider you as their role models; you inspire them, influence them. And that's a great benefit of being a teacher - having a chance to play an important role in someone's life. With a lot of changes that been done by the government like The Standards-based Primary School Curriculum, School Base-Assessment, National Education Blueprint, 1 Sports for 1 Students , the teachers are facing new challenges. They should be prepared to overcome the challenges and ready to adapt any changes. To achieve the educational goals, we need to try our hardest and implement all the elements in National Philosophy of Education in the teaching and learning process to make sure the students will be a good person in accordance to the philosophy. To become a good teacher, I will always remember that heart to heart relation and understanding and looking at everything in the world from the students prospect is very necessary. There is one poem about teacher that touched my heart. The title of the poem is In Praise of Teachers by Julius Habarinsa. I quickly realized that I am nobody without a teacher. With a humble heart, I thank to all my teachers and lecturers that taught me the real meaning of life.

In Praise Of Teachers Julius Babarinsa We are all indebted to our teachers These are the teachers who taught us all the things we know and do today Now you ask who are these teachers? Teachers are the instructors, trainers, tutors, coaches, lecturers and professors from the kindergarten to the university Teachers taught us how to read and write They explained how to search for the logic behind every statement and argument Teachers demonstrated to us in many ways how to approach problems and solve them Whenever we make mistakes and commit errors Teachers always remind us that there is nothing to be ashamed of because we are still apprentices and not yet masters Sometimes, when we are depressed our teachers are always there to motivate us with sweet words of encouragement They taught us that the world we live in is a planet which rotates and revolves That on this planet there are two-legged, four-legged and multi-legged creatures That human beings belong to the two-legged species and have many colors and languages Our teachers taught us that one man can make a difference in the world we live in Men like Abraham Lincoln, Mao Tsetung, Lenin, Mandela, Mohammad Ali and Bill Gates Our teachers are sources of inspiration Can we live without teachers? You decide!
