Dear First Grade Parents,

April 22, 2013

Word Wall Words:
(Red word can not be sounded out.)

We have been very busy in our first grade class. Here are some hi-lights:
Today is Earth Day! We talked about what we can do to keep the Earth a nice place to live. Many of the students took bags outside with them at lunch recess and picked up trash on the school yard. Last week we started our JA program. It stands for Junior Achievement. We are learning about family, needs and wants, money, and helping each other in our community. Miss Bobbie is our volunteer who comes in each Thursday to teach us these lessons. You will be hearing about her from the kids I am sure. She has a lot of fun activities planned that help teach the social studies concepts. We are very busy with science the next few weeks. Spring is hear, we hope, and so we are finishing the year by learning about spring. I know you are all aware of the critters we have in our classroom habitat. The kids will reviewing life cycles of certain animals; learning about what an insect is; learning about how the animals survive in the habitat; they will learn about the food chain; and much more. They will become great observers and recorders too. Weve started practicing our 2nd Readers Theaters. The kids did exceptionally well when they presented them to their classmates a few weeks ago. Now they have different partners and scripts they are reading and they are looking forward to presenting again. These help with reading fluently, and reading with expression. I will be sending home book baggies for a few more weeks. Our last day of reading these books will be May 17. I think many of the kids are losing interest, and I know once the weather gets warmer, they will be outside more. Im all about that too, but I still want them to continue to read books you may have for them. They have come too far and will forget what they have learned if they dont continue reading with you. We will be reading in class up to the last day in first grade. I also want to thank the parent volunteers who have come in each week to read with the kids! Thank you very much from all of us! The kids are writing non-fiction stories. They are experts in many things and are doing some simple research on animals to make them even more of an expert. The kids made some spring projects that are displayed in our room and hall: windsocks, raindrops, and colorful insects.

We will be finishing up our last few units in math, and the kids are doing quite well with fractions and geometry. All the students will be taking a math test in 2 weeks, and although we will review some in class, it is important for you to help them prepare for this also. Here are some more difficult things they need to do: -Write a number shown by base 10 blocks
-Know the tens and ones places in a 3 digit number -Add and subtract numbers -Count money including quarters and show the same amount using fewer coins -Tell time and write it -Find the rule and figure out the in and out -Telling which pictures are symmetrical
