Murfatlar

Origin Blessed with one of the most suitable natural settings, Mutfatlar Vineyard is situated in the south-eastern part of Romania, between the Danube and the Black Sea, in the centre of the Dobrogea plateau. Th8e vineyard streches across a surface of more than 3000ha, covering the villages of Murfatlar, Valul lui Traian, Poarta Alba and Siminoc. Several elements such as: continental climate, diverse territory the vineyard covers, a shellering effect of the relief against the cold currents coming from the north-east, and the unique and extremely favourable influence of the Black Sea that results in less aggressive summer heat and less frosty winters, offer Murfatlar vineyard the perfect microclimate to produce a large variety of quality wines.

Tradition For ages, wine growing has been the basic occupation of the people in Dobrogea, and those at Murfatlar are proudly aware they carry on a very long tradition. Schytia Minor, the old appelation of Dobrogea, was best known as a vine growing region. The wine obtained here was often used as trade currency by the local population and the Greek colonies on the Black Sea coast. Wines Chardonnay, Pinot Gris, Pinot Noir, Muscat Ottonel and folle Blanche assortments were planted at the initiative of two Romanian wine specialists: Gheorghe Nicoleanu and Vasile Brezeanu. The range of wine assortments cultivated at Murfatlar was expanded to Sauvignon Blanc, Muscat Ottonel, Traminer Rose, Riesling Italian as white wines and Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot as red wines. The core of what was about to become the most prestigious and best known Romanian vineylard was established at the beginning of the century along with the first noble west-European assortments planted on Romanian soil.
