After dedicating four plus years to earning a degree, many graduates are excited about the prospect of entering the workforce. Unfortunately, college diplomas dont come with automatic employment; rather a degree makes a candidate more employable. In todays job market, employers not only look for entry-level candidates with a great education, theyre looking for graduates with relevant experience as well. Now that companies are emerging from the economic downturn with new ideas and strategies, the outlook for graduates is improving. According to the National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), employers anticipate hiring 13 percent more Class of 2013 college graduates than they hired from the Class of 2012. Although the statistics show a cautiously optimistic outlook, it doesnt mean finding a job post-graduation will be a piece of cake. There are a few things graduates and soon-to-be graduates can do in order to become a competitive applicant so they can have their cake and eat it, too.

After six years of school, I have to admit that my favorite part wasnt the basketball games, the dorm life, the classes, or the extracurricular activities: My favorite experiences were at my internships. Combining undergrad and graduate school, Ive had a total of seven internships. Some were paid, some were for class credit, and others were purely volunteer. Some even gave me a job title, and certainly did not require me to simply fetch coffee. I worked on real projects that had a real impact. While not all internships will lead directly to a job, and some wont even give you a paycheck, the experience you earn is the most valuable part. If there is any time in your life when you should work for free, its now. It will be challenging at times to work an internship into your schedule, but you wont regret putting in the effort. When you take on the intern role, heres what you gain: A stronger resume. This is the obvious one, the one Im sure your parents and professors tell you. But in order to build a strong resume, dont just leave with a name on paper -- create a sample for your portfolio or find a mentor in the industry.

The Value of an Internship

Todays job market for graduates is competitive, but with the right combination of skills and experiences you can stand out among the rest. The best way to add skills and experience to your resume is through interning. Internships.com surveyed over 300 employers and found that 53% of companies plan to hire more interns in 2013 than they did in 2012. Internships increase your employability, expand your network and, in some cases, can be a direct route to a full-time job offer. In fact, 60 percent of 2012 college graduates who took part in paid internships received at least one job offer (NACE). When it comes to kick starting your professional career, finding an internship is a valuable stepping stone.

Dont Just Sit Tight
Waiting and wishing for an employer to find interest in your resume is not the most effective strategy when job hunting. According to Karyn McCoy, associate director of Employer Relations for DePauls Career Center, peak recruiting periods are very dependent on industry. For example, industries like finance and accounting may have peak recruitment in the fall, while jobs in the creative industry come up on an as needed basis. Hopefully graduates are doing their interviewing in the fall before they graduate, notes Karyn. If you missed peak recruiting season for your industry, though, it doesnt mean you should be sitting around and waiting until next year. Youve got to try a more proactive approach. Attend networking events, join groups on LinkedIn, and do informational interviews - youve got to put yourself out there to get noticed.

need to be able to communicate about those skills. Something I hear from employers is your students have great experience and great skills, but they are not always that great about communicating how it is relevant to the position they are applying for, says Karyn. If youre not sure how to explain how your skills and experiences are relevant to the jobs youre applying for, practice interviewing with a career advisor or ASK mentor.

Another way to become a competitive applicant is to work at developing key skills. For instance, if you are looking into an industry that is writing intensive, start a blog. Look for ways outside of the classroom to really develop those skills, advises McCoy. After you have developed your skills, you

The Value of Internships

These will become incredibly important as you approach senior year, and youll be way ahead of your peers who didnt complete internships. A chance to observe the experts. The intern stereotype is the nervous kid fetching coffee. And while some internships do have you completing pretty basic work at times, the best part is being able to observe how people in your desired career field work. Is their office calm and relaxed or bustling with energy and excitement? Do they sit at their desks all day, or are they out meeting clients all morning?

continued from page 1

A lesson in time management. A lot of internships will require you to help many people in many different departments at once, or theyll ask you to help on multiple projects. Youll quickly learn how to juggle these tasks and do so with ease. An internship is a great way for you to get into the routine of managing multiple responsibilities. These are just the basic ways an internship can help you -- there are many more benefits youll discover on the job. For example, my first internship was a rotational internship with WBBM Newsradio 780. I spent a few weeks in each department. I went in wanting to be a reporter, and by the end, Id learned that I didnt like sales, reporting was okay, but I loved news production. Youll have realizations like this, too. All you need to do is go out there and give it a try. Never be afraid of gaining more experience -- the willingness to observe and learn is one of the best qualities you can have.
