INSTRUCTIONS TO CANDIDATES Answer all questions. All questions carry equal marks.

COMBUSTION AND INCINERATION CHE 3208(5) Question 1 (a) (b) Explain in details the combustion process of a solid fuel [20 marks] Medium volatile bituminous (mvb) coal is used for heat generation in certain type of boilers. The ultimate analysis of coal is given in the table below. Ultimate Analysis H N O 4.78 1.33 3.85

Dry ash free

C 89.29

S 0.75

Determine the composition of the coal on dry basis if the ash content is 4.4% [5 marks] Question 2 (a) (b) Describe the terms Higher Heating Value and Lower Heating Value. [10 marks] The Higher Heating Value of a biomass can be computed using the Boie equation which is as follows: HHV (Kcal/kg) = 83.22C + 274.3H 25.8O + 15N + 9.4Cl + 65P Where C = mass percent of carbon H = mass percent of hydrogen O = mass percent of oxygen N = mass percent of nitrogen Cl = mass percent of chlorine P = mass percent of phosphorus A biomass has the following composition: C 52.5 % H 7.12 % O 39.36 % N 1.02 % (i) (ii) Calculate the Higher Heating Value in kJ/kg. [5 marks] Calculate the Lower Heating Value of the dry biomass in kJ/kg. [10 marks] Data: 1 J = 0.23901 cal

Question 3

(a) (b)

Explain, with the help of a diagram, the principles of forced circulation boilers. [15 marks] Give 5 advantages and disadvantages of forced circulation boilers. [10 marks]

Question 4 (a) Explain the operation of circulating fluidized bed incinerator and bubbling fluidized bed furnace. [10 marks] Municipal solid waste has a lower heating value of 5 MJ/kg and it is planned to use it for power production. 1200 tons of municipal solid waste is generated daily and it will be burned in an incinerator. The overall efficiency of the plant is 33%. MSW is assumed to be 85% of biological origin and the carbon content of MSW as fired is 0.32 kg/kg of fuel. (i) (ii) Calculate the amount of power that will be produced daily. [5 marks] Calculate the amount of GHG that is produced by using MSW as a source of energy. [10 marks]
