Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) is a chronic inflammatory disease that can affect various parts of the body, especially the skin, joints, blood, kidneys, lungs, heart, nervous system, and/or other body organs or systems. SLE is an autoimmune disease that causes the person to make proteins against their own tissues. SLE affects 1 out of every 185 Americans and can be difficult to diagnose, as symptoms come and go and mimic many other illnesses. SLE ranges from mild to life threatening. It is the most common systemic illness of African-American females and the most common autoimmune disease in all young females. Saint Louis University has the largest SLE population in the Midwest. The Rheumatology Division has ongoing research protocols in SLE and has published numerous papers in this area. Juvenile Idiopathic Arthritis (JIA) is the leading cause of arthritis in children affecting over 200,000 in the United States. Saint Louis University is home to the 9th largest Pediatric Rheumatology clinic in the country, serving over 2,000 children in the region. The Pediatric Rheumatology clinic follows almost 200 children with JIA. The Division has published over 100 papers on JIA and its laboratory parameters.
