the Windows CE Operating system has been changed to accommodate the Chinese and Japanese languages. If your SIR-3000 has the letter J or C at the end of the GUI release number (Example: GUI 2 0 1 0J) as displayed under SYSTEM VERSION SHOW. This will serve to indicate that your SIR-3000 has had the appropriate changes to accommodate the Chinese or Japanese languages. If your system does not display the C or J and you wish to upgrade your system to accommodate the Japanese or Chinese character set. You must return your system to our field service department. Please set aside approximately 1 hour to do this upgrade and any prerequisite steps, if you are trying it for the first time. After you have done the upgrade and are familiar with the process, you should be able to do the entire process in approximately 5-10 minutes. Additionally, please give yourself adequate time after the installation to review the changes that have been made to the software. The software changes are listed in the file Versions.rtf or Versions.htm. Prerequisites: USB Cable You will need a USB cable that connects to your computer and SIR-3000. If you have a USB printer or USB scanner, you probably have one of these cables. Access to the SIR-3000 from your PC using Microsoft ActiveSync or the Windows Mobile Device Center Directions for setting up the USB connection and installing the USB drivers is located in Appendix G of the SIR-3000 manual. If your PC is running Windows XP, you would use Microsoft ActiveSync 4.5 or later If your PC is running Windows Vista, your USB connection will be managed through the Windows Mobile Device Center Please use the latest version of the SIR-3000 manual located under the Manuals link at http://support.geophysical.com . Access to the Geophysical website Register for a username and password for SIR-3000 downloads at http://support.geophysical.com/ Download SIR3K_VER_<x.xxx>.exe and extract the contents. The installation includes a FlashFX Disk folder with 6 sub folders: FlashFX Disk\STARTUP Contains the SIR-3000 user interface software. FlashFX Disk\FIRMWARE Contains firmware for each internal hardware component. FlashFX Disk\TEST Contains the software that will allow you to upgrade the firmware. FlashFX Disk\SETUPS Contains predefined Metric unit setups for TerraSIRch and various operational modes FlashFX Disk\SETUPSE Contains predefined English unit setups for TerraSIRch and various operational modes FlashFX Disk\LANGUAGE Contains language folders and files for internationalization purposes. Please be careful to only download the Upgrade version that contains Languages appropriate to your WinCE system configuration . SIR-3000s that displays the GUI <xxxx> C with or without the Letter C Will support: English, Spanish, Italian, German and French SIR-3000s that displays the GUI <xxxx> J with the letter J, Will support: English, Spanish, Italian, German, French and Japanese
Versions.rtf/htm is also available on the support web site This file contains release information for the firmware versions and software changes. During the file transfer process, you will find similar folders on the SIR-3000, You will need to access these folders by connecting your SIR-3000 to your PC via a USB cable. PLEASE NOTE: Throughout these procedures references are made to connecting and disconnecting the power source. Use either a Battery or the AC adaptor to provide power during these processes but not both.

Part 1 - Checking Your Current Version: From the SIR-3000: 1. Disconnect and reconnect the power source. NOTE: If using a battery, remove and replace. If using the AC power adaptor, disconnect and reconnect. 2. At the initial TerraSIRch dialog, start TerraSIRch. 3. If the Open File dialog appears click on the left arrow to cancel it. 4. Navigate to SYSTEM-->VERSION-->SHOW and click the ENTER button. Compare your versions to the versions listed below. 5. To update your software, follow the installation Instructions in Part 2. 6. If you need to make changes to the firmware, follow the installation instructions in Part 3. Firmware or Software

Part 2 - To Upgrade TerraSIRch (SIR-3000 Graphical User Interface -GUI) and Firmware loader: Starting the SIR-3000: 1. Connect power to the SIR-3000 without the antenna attached. 2. At the initial TerraSIRch dialog click the run/stop button / three or more times. This will start the USB TEST program. You will use this program later to install new firmware if necessary. 3. Click the Help button ? on the SIR-3000. This will exit you from the USB test program and from TerraSIRch. If successful you will see the WindowsCE.net logo in the middle of the screen. Connect PC to SIR-3000 via USB 1. Connect Master end of USB cable to PC. 2. Connect Slave end of USB cable to SIR-3000. From the PC: 1. When the ActiveSync icon in the PC system tray turns green click it and select Explore. Navigate to Mobile Device>My Computer. 2. Copy the entire contents of the SIR-3000 installation package (FlashFX Disk) from the PC to the Mobile Device>My Computer. Click OK when you see the File Conversion dialog. Copying the files should take about 1 minute. 3. This completes the GUI portion of the upgrade. Please verify your upgraded installation as described in Part 4.

Part 3 - Firmware Upgrade: In the previous part you upgraded the SIR-3000 user interface. In this part you will use the firmware loader to upgrade the firmware. NOTE: You must perform this part in order to load the FIRMWARE necessary for system operation. Check the list in Part 1 to see if you need to run this portion, but if you are uncertain you should run these steps. From the SIR-3000: 1. Detach the USB cable from the SIR-3000. 2. Disconnect and reconnect the power source without the antenna attached. NOTE: If using a battery, remove and replace. If using the AC power adaptor, disconnect and reconnect. 3. At the initial TerraSIRch dialog, click the run/stop / button three or more times. This will start the Firmware Loader (USB TEST program). You will now use this program to load firmware on the unit. 4. From the Loader screen, install the new firmware by selecting each piece of firmware (in the order listed below) and clicking enter. Watch for messages that give version information; these messages indicate completion for each piece of firmware loaded. a. TIMWARE (Takes approx 10 sec) TerraSIRch (or other program modes) cannot have been run for this TIMWARE to install. TIMWARE takes the longest to install. Please note that TIMWARE will always complete with an error that states Error updating Firmware. After installation, you should check that the correct version of TIMWARE is installed by following the Verifying Your Installation part. This firmware is only required if noted in Part 1. Install if uncertain. b. ALTERAWARE (Takes approx. 5 sec). This firmware is only required if noted in Part 1. Install if uncertain. c. DSPWARE (Takes approx. 1 sec). This firmware is only required if noted in Part 1. Install if uncertain. d. USBWARE (Takes up to 2 minutes) Must be installed last. This firmware is only required if noted in Part 1. Install if uncertain. Do not press the button multiple times. The system will give no indication that this install has started. A successful install will end by showing the value SIR-3000 V1.0 or similar. 5. Exit the Firmware loader upon completion by clicking ?. 6. This completes the firmware portion of the upgrade. Please verify your upgraded installation as described in Part 4.

Part 4: Verifying Your Installation: From the SIR-3000: 1. Detach the USB cable from the SIR-3000. 2. Disconnect and reconnect the power source. NOTE: If using a battery, remove and replace. If using the AC power adaptor, disconnect and reconnect. 3. At the initial TerraSIRch dialog, start TerraSIRch. 4. If the Open File dialog appears click on the left arrow. 5. Navigate to SYSTEM>VERSION>SHOW and click enter. A successful upgrade is indicated by matching values from the SIR-3000 dialog to the following table: Firmware or Software

Troubleshooting: To install SIR-3000 software you will copy it from your PC to the SIR-3000. In order to copy properly you must make certain that the SIR-3000 software is not currently running. If you receive any messages indicating that any of the files were unable to be copied, verify that you can clearly see the Windows CE.net logo on the SIR-3000. If any dialog or splash screen is showing you will not be able to copy the files. To install SIR-3000 firmware (after copying successfully), you need to ensure that power sources to the SIR-3000 were disconnected. For example, TIMWARE will not load if you cycle the power via the power/standby button. Although the Instructions may appear long they really are a detailed way of stating: 1. Download and Extract the SIR-3000 software from the support site to your PC. 2. Stop the SIR-3000 software from running so that you can copy the new software 3. connect the SIR-3000 to your PC via USB cable. 4. Copy the SIR-3000 software from your PC to the SIR-3000. 5. Completely remove and reconnect power sources on the SIR-3000 to perform a hard boot. 6. Install the Firmware (if necessary) using the USB Test program. 7. Restart the SIR-3000 and verify that your Software and Firmware match the release.
