Hougang, East Coast and Jurong Lake are the latest Remaking Our Heartland areas to benefit from comprehensive redevelopment plans.
The start of a New Year marks new beginnings. And this new start could not have come at a better time for residents of Hougang, East Coast and Jurong Lake. The three areas were announced in January 2011 to undergo a $1-billion makeover in the second phase of the Remaking Our Heartland (ROH) programme. "HDB estates are home to many Singaporeans. And home is where the heart is. That is why remaking the heartlands is a key part of the government's plans to develop and shape the Singapore of tomorrow," said Minister for National Development Mr Mah Bow Tan, at the ROH 'Colours of Hougang' exhibition on 8 January 2011. About 77,000 visitors thronged the ROH exhibitions held in Hougang, East Coast and Jurong Lake for a glimpse of the new and exciting developments that they will enjoy over the next five years. The redevelopment plans will build on the distinctive qualities that make each area unique and endearing to Singaporeans.
The outdoor play corridor will be in-line with recreational points and sports facilities to bring the outdoors even closer to residents.

Besides the Outdoor Play Corridor, East Coast residents can look forward to a rejuvenated Town Centre, heritage foot trail, comprehensive cycling network and brand-new integrated sports facility. The homes of eligible residents will also be given a facelift under upgrading programmes. As many as 98 percent of those polled at the exhibition expressed their excitement over the plans. Mr Leong Him Fook, a Bedok resident for 30 years, said that he is looking forward to the rejuvenation works. "I have been living in Bedok for a long time and now, there will be even more facilities," he added.
Colours of Hougang
Speaking at the 'Colours of Hougang' Exhibition, Minister for Foreign Affairs and Member of Parliament for Aljunied GRC, Mr George Yeo shared that the proposals for Hougang "will seek to enrich the key historical landmarks and quality of life for residents in Hougang and engage residents in shaping the town's future." The exhibition, which took place over five days in January, attracted more than 15,000 visitors.
The new town plaza at the Bedok Town Centre will provide a space for residents to gather and interact.
Said another visitor to the exhibition, Mr Lee, "The exhibition is good, gives residents an overview of what is going on and what to expect; residents appreciate that HDB is doing something for residents of Bedok."
Minister for National Development, Mr Mah Bow Tan launched the second batch of Remaking Our Heartland plans.
In a poll conducted at the exhibition, close to 81 percent of respondents indicated that they were excited, or very excited about the plans for Hougang. Another 95 percent agreed that the proposals in the exhibition would contribute to the vision for Hougang. And it is not hard to understand why. Under the ROH initiative, Hougang Town Centre will be jazzed up with a new landmark development offering shopping, dining and entertainment facilities. This mixed commercial and private residential development will be integrated with

Residents will have convenient access to the heart of activity at Jurong Gateway as well as to outdoor spaces like the Pandan Reservoir and Bukit Timah Nature Reserve. A Heritage Corner ensures that Hougang's rich history is preserved and not forgotten. (Artist's impression)
The former Jurong Entertainment Centre is being transformed into the new JCube, adding to the array of recreational options when it opens in 2012. "While I treasure fond memories of the old entertainment centre, I am excited and very much looking forward to JCube," said Jurong resident Ms Kathryn Zhang.
And to ensure that the buzz extends all the way into the HDB heartland, the Jurong Town Centre and 10 other neighbourhood centres will be getting facelifts. This is the first massive plan by HDB to systematically rejuvenate neighbourhood centres in the same region.

Speaking at the 'Gateway to the East Coast' exhibition, Senior Minister and Adviser to East Coast GRC, Professor S Jayakumar called the development plans a "major initiative" that will bring benefits to residents of East Coast as well as other Singaporeans.
Over the next five years, a comprehensive pedestrian and cycling network of at least 24 kilometres will be created across the Jurong Lake area, giving residents convenient access to the enhanced facilities and attractions nearby. With the Jurong Lake area poised for further transformation, it comes as no surprise that 99 percent of the residents agreed in an e-survey that the ROH plans will contribute to making the area more vibrant and exciting.
