Farmer donates prize money to help feed families at Community Resource Center
By Amy Bell

A local farmer has chosen to donate her prize money from a contest to help those in need throughout Manchester. Sharon Ervine of Manchester, who works at the family-owned Elmer Ervine Dairy Farm in Manchester along with her husband, Ricky, was the winner of the America's Farmers Grow Communities prize of $2,500. Ervine chose to donate the funds to Manchester's Community Resource Center for use in purchasing locally grown produce for its food pantry and for "produce" coupons to distribute to families and seniors in need of access to
fresh produce. The contest is sponsored by the Monsanto Fund and aims to help local farming communities. Farmers who buy Monsanto products get the chance to enter to win a $2,500 donation for their favorite community non-profit organization. Because the United States Department of Agriculture declared Washtenaw County a natural disaster area due to last summer's drought, an additional $2,500 will also donated from the fund. "It (the donation) will enhance the produce we are able to purchase, said Laura Seyfried, executive director of the resource cenPLEASE SEE DONATION/3-A

hildren from throughout the area will gather March 30 at Carr Park to take part in joyous chaos and a form of hunting thats not a sport. The children are gathering for the Manchester Mens Club annual Easter Egg Hunt set to take place at Carr Park. More than 2,500 eggs will be placed throughout the park as part of the annual event. Although the hunt begins at 1 p.m., mens club president Mark Stedman recommends getting there around 12 p.m. Stedman said he expects more than 500 kids to come to this years egg hunt. The process is pretty simple, but it equates to a joyous chaos, he said. The kids are split into groups according to age. Then, they will be set free to gather eggs. It takes a couple hours to put the eggs out but in six minutes the eggs are gone, he said. The kids will also get the chance to meet with
the Easter Bunny, who is planning on making an appearance, Stedman said. In addition, the club giving away Tootsie Rolls, which it will purchase from an area churchs fundraiser.
The Wednesday before the event, members of the club will gather to dye the eggs, which are all reboxed and refridgerated until the day of the event. This year will also include some bonus plastic eggs containing cash prizes. Its quite the process to dye 2,500 eggs, said Stedman. Although Stedman wasnt certain on the exact number of years, he said the egg hunt has been going on for at least 20. The mens club currently has more than 100 members and meets the third Wednesday of each month at the former American Legion building. The group, which has been in existence for 30 years, is a 501-c3 community resource organization that puts on a host of events throughout the village and donates to various projects. Manchester High Schools band received a rst-division rating at district festival and will perform at this years state festival slated for early May.
Students from Manchester Middle and High School Bands received the highest possible ranking for a series of recent performances and will go on to represent their respective schools at the state-wide festival. Both bands received a first division overall rating
at the March 1 Michigan School Band and Orchestra Associations District Band and Orchestra Festival held in Manchester. Ensembles that receive an overall division one rating qualify for state festival, which will take place in early May. Im very pleased, theyve worked very hard, said Jared Throneberry, band director. I think they are going to have a good show.
Throneberry said its important to note that festival is not a competition, but more of an evaluation where each band is essentially competing against itself. Last year, the high school band received a division two rating and the middle school band received a division one.
