740B Transmission Electronic System

The document describes various sensors that provide input to the Transmission/Chassis ECM system on articulated trucks. These include temperature sensors for transmission oil, torque converter oil, and hydraulic oil that monitor component temperatures. Speed sensors measure the speed of the torque converter output, transmission output shaft, intermediate shaft, engine, cooling fan, and park brake pressure. Additional sensors monitor fuel level, output transfer gear temperature, and brake oil pressure. The ECM uses signals from these sensors to control transmission operation, detect failures, and provide diagnostic information.

Sensors

Transmission Oil Temperature, Torque Converter Oil Temperature Sensor, Hydraulic Oil Temperature Sensor

The "Transmission Oil Temperature Sensor" is a passive analog sensor. This sensor indicates the temperature of the lubricating oil that is supplied to the transmission in order to protect the transmission against overheating. The

sensor has an operating temperature range of -40C (-40F) to 150 C (302F). This sensor is an input to the Transmission/Chassis ECM. The sensor is used to adjust the time for shifting of the transmission, during transmission calibrations, trigger high temperature event diagnostics and for the derate cycle. The ECM also monitors the circuit for this sensor. If the ECM determines the resistance of this sensor is too high or too low, the ECM logs a diagnostic code for the sensor. The temperature sensors are resistive sender type sensors. When the temperature of the fluid changes, the input resistance to the ECM changes. The ECM associates a specific resistance from the sensor as a specific temperature. The resistance of the sensor decreases as the temperature of the fluid increases. When the temperature of the fluid is 150 C (302 F), the resistance of the sensor is 18.6 ohms. When the temperature of the fluid is 40 C (40 F), the resistance of the sensor is 33,650 ohms. The ECM supplies 5 VDC power to the sensor.

Torque Converter Output Speed

The "Torque Converter Output Speed Sensor" is a frequency sensor that is located on the torque converter output. The frequency of the sensor is proportional to the speed of the torque converter output shaft. The sensor is used for controlling the transmission clutches. The sensor is also used in the transmission calibrations. The ECM supplies 8 VDC power to the sensor.

Transmission Output Speed 1 and Transmission Output Speed 2

The "Transmission Output Speed Sensors" are frequency sensors that are located near the transmission output shaft. The frequency (output) of the sensor is proportional to the speed of the transmission output shaft. Each sensor measures the speed of the shaft. The sensors are used for controlling the transmission clutches. The sensors are also used in the transmission calibrations. A diagnostic code is activated in the event of a failure with one of the sensors. A valid transmission output speed is still present when only one sensor fails.

Transmission Intermediate Speed Sensor

The "Transmission Intermediate Speed" sensor is a frequency sensor that is located near the intermediate shaft of the transmission. The frequency of the sensor is proportional to the speed of the intermediate shaft of the transmission. The sensor measures the speed of the shaft. The signal from the sensor is used by the Transmission/Chassis ECM to control the transmission clutches. The sensor is also used in the calibration of the transmission.

Engine Speed Sensor

The "Engine Speed Sensor" is a two wire speed sensor that provides a frequency input to the Transmission/Chassis ECM. The Transmission/Chassis ECM will use the input signal from the speed sensor to determine the rotational speed of the Engine. During sensor operation, as a gear tooth passes below the sensor, a magnetic element in the sensor will induce a voltage across the sensor contacts. The voltage produces one alternating cycle for each gear tooth that passes under the sensor tip. The ECM will monitor the frequency of the alternating cycles to calculate the speed of the engine. The DC resistance range of the sensor between contact 2 to contact 1 is 110 ohms to 200 ohms at 25.0 C (77.0 F).

Fuel Level Sender

"Fuel Level Sender" The "Fuel Level Sender" is mounted on the top of the fuel tank. The "Transmission/Chassis ECM" monitors the resistance of the fuel level sender input signal. The ECM associates the resistance value of the sender signal of the circuit with a specific level of fuel in the fuel tank. When the fuel tank is nearly empty, the resistance in the sender circuit is approximately 248 8 ohms. When the fuel tank is nearly full, the resistance in the sender circuit is approximately 27 2 ohms.

Output Transfer Gear (OTG) Temperature Sensor

Temperature Sensor for the Output Transfer Gear The "OTG Temperature Sensor" is an input to the ECM. The ECM will determine if the temperature of the output transfer gear is low. The ECM uses the information in order to determine the filter and the pressure events. The ECM sends the information to the instrument cluster. The temperature sensor connects to the ECM through contact J1-36.

Cooling Fan Speed Sensor

The ECM will use the "Cooling Fan Speed Sensor" to monitor and control the speed of the hydraulic motor and the fan. During sensor operation, as a gear tooth passes below the sensor, a magnetic element in the sensor will induce a voltage. The sensor produces one alternating cycle on "signal A" for each gear tooth that passes under the sensor tip. The ECM will monitor the frequency of the alternating cycles to calculate the speed of the hydraulic motor and the fan. "Signal B" is currently not used.

Park Brake Pressure Sensor

Park Brake Pressure Sensor The "Park Brake Pressure Sensor" monitors the pressure in the parking brake supply. The sensor sends a signal to the ECM which will illuminate a light on the dashboard when the parking brake supply pressure is not present and the parking brake is engaged. The operating temperature of the sensor is 40 C (40 F) to 125 C (257 F). The maximum operating pressure for this sensor is 35.5 MPa.

Low Brake Oil Pressure Sensor

Low Brake Oil Pressure Sensor The "Low Brake Oil Pressure Sensor" alerts the operator when the brake oil pressure drops below the minimum operating pressure. The operating temperature of the sensor is 40 C (40 F) to 125 C (257 F). The maximum operating pressure for this sensor is 35.5 MPa.
