A two days Training Programme on Up-Scaling Operations and Preparation of Business Plan including Liquidity and Cash Flow Analysis was held at Credible Micro-Finance Private Limited (an NBFC promoted by BISWA) premises on 6th & 7th April 2009. It was jointly organised by Credible Micro-Finance Private Limited (CMPL) & ACTED, New Delhi and promoted by BISWA. Twenty managers those involved in accounts and business planning participated in to build up their professional skill. They were given training on
preparation of business plans, cash flow & liquidity management in micro-finance programme with developing the prospects clients, funding agencies and management. Two resource persons, Mr. Atul and Mr. Avishek from M2i Consultancy, New Delhi conducted the training programme. As the resource persons both of them mostly emphasised on Capital structuring in this capacity building programme. The In-house arrangement was made by a host team from CMPL.

A workshop on writing skill for scientific papers & r e s e a r c h proposals was organised by BISWA for three days, from 8th to 10th April 2009 at its own campus. It was inaugurated by Mr. K.C.Malick, Chairman BISWA after a brief introduction by Mr. Shiv Prasad Meher, Manager Public Relations. The resource persons, Dr. Uday Shankar Mishra, Dr. (Mrs.) Mala Ramnathan & Dr. William Joe came from Centre for Developmental Studies, Trivendrum, Kerala. The workshop was in fact intended to build up the capacity of personnel of BISWA those who are responsible for writing proposals to funding agencies. But some outsiders were also accommodated in it. In the day-1, Dr. Mishra taught on how to write scientific papers & explained the link between research and writing, accessible writing, developing one's key message, planning and preparation, what is a scientific paper, typical structure of a scientific paper, writing your first draft, preparing a scientific paper, completing your first draft and authorship & copyright. Dr. Joe taught on computer skills for writers with explaining useful word processing functions, how to use the thesaurus, making a table and figures,
creating bulleted and numbered list, footnotes and endnotes, group assignment, reading the paper, structuring the paper, computer skill application, submission of assignment & take h o m e assignments. On the second day Dr Mishra taught on getting feedback on your draft, what is a peer review journal, peer review, where to publish and getting ready for publication. Dr. Joe taught on revising your draft, submission of draft for peer review with comments and discussion. Again Dr. Mishra taught on what good proposals do, research questions with study types and designs. Then Dr. Joe taught on identification of research questions with explaining group assignment: research proposal writing and take home assignment: literature review. On the third and final day, Dr. Mishra taught on overview of data collection techniques, plan for data collection, work plan and budget, with finalizing the research proposal. Then Dr. Joe taught on finalizing research proposal and submission of assignment. All the prepared research proposals were then reviewed by Dr. Mala Ramnathan & Dr. Mishra. In the final session interactions and feedbacks from the participants were heard and discussed. 4

The World Health Day was observed in BISWA on 7th April 2009 at BTI as per its own tradition. All the staff members of Central Office of BISWA attended the meeting with full enthusiasm as the audience. At the outset Mr. Shiv Prasad Meher, Manager Public Relations explained the importance of such observation with briefly linking it to the various initiatives taken by BISWA in the health sector. He also described why and how 'World Health Day' came into existence and explained the various themes introduced by World Health Organisation in recent years with the theme of this year, i.e. "Save lives: Make hospitals safe in emergency". Then Dr. Diptibala Patnaik, Consultant to SWADHAR detailed the theme of the year with its importance as on today. It is mainly focused on the resilience and safety of health facilities and health workers, who treat those affected by emergencies, she said. Three doctors from Sambalpur District Sadar Hospital, Dr. Pramod Kumar Purohit, Surgeon; Dr. Giridhari Pradhan & Dr. Gyanaranjan Dash, both Obstreacians & Gynaecologists were invited as guests on that day. They were also felicitated on that occasion as well wishers & always helpful to BISWA in the time of its needs. Speaking to the occasion they shared their experience with BISWA and appreciated the initiatives taken by the organisation in the health as well as social development sectors. The three doctors had all praise for BISWA in their deliberations. Two ex-inmates of SWADHAR, Ms Bhagyashri Behera & Ms Laibon Kashyap also spoke to the occasion

It was another day of devastation. A devastating fire broke out at Betanati village of Kaptapalli gram panchayat of Nuagaon Block in Nayagarh district. The fire engulfed a total of 120 houses out of which 85 were ruined. About 380 people were affected in that devastating fire and were rendered homeless. BISWA has its District Office in Nayagarh and ADC Office in Nuagaon block. An official team from BISWA rushed to Betanati for relief works. The message was soon
Mr. Surya Narayan Mohapatra. All the Targeted Intervention Project staff alongwith other staff members of BISWA thereat cooperated to make it a success. A health camp was organised at MK Rai village, Gudari on the next day. About 120 villagers from that local area came and participated in it with taking benefit of free drug distribution in that health camp. Dr. Rajaram Sarangi, Dr. Radhamadhab Nayak and Pharmacist Surya Narayan Mohapatra conducted that camp with checking the patients and dispensing them medicines. The village ASHA workers Ms Nayana Bidika ad Ms Harapriya Sabar alongwith Mr Prasad Lima, a TI Project staff cooperated in conducting the health camp smoothly.

Save Hospitals to Save Lives
he message from World Health Organisation (WHO), the health wing of United Nations Organisation (UNO) on the occasion of World Health Day, i.e. April 7th, carries much importance for those who are working in the health sector all over world. As a matter of fact, WHO came into existence in 1948 and its constitution drafted in 1950. So soon after that it is a customary on part of WHO to release a message on World Health Day, as it is its foundation day. The theme of message of this year is "Save Lives: Make Hospitals Safe in Emergency". The theme is mainly focused on the resilience and safety of health facilities and health workers, who treat those affected by emergencies. WHO is urging governments, health providers, civil society, donors and the public to do what they can to improve emergency preparedness of health facilities. The aim is to ensure that health facilities such as hospitals, primary health care centres, small clinics, and other similar establishments can both withstand and continue to operate during and after emergencies like earthquakes, cyclones and conflict Thus the theme leaves a message to underscore the importance of investing in health infrastructure that can withstand any hazard and serve people in immediate needs both in public as well as private sectors.

A health camp was also organised on that occasion at VRO campus with cooperation from Dr. Radhamadhab Nayak. Some local scribes also attended the programme. World Health Day was also observed on behalf of BISWA at Gunupur on that day. It was organised at Ashram Primary School, wherein the Head Master, Mr. Prashant Mishra participated as the chief guest. Local villagers and students in large number participated in it. The main discussion was focused on locally prevailing common diseases and their preventive measures. distributed to men, women and children, as the cruel fire has burned all their belongings into ash and they were left with nothing to cover their body. BISWA worked in cooperation with the District Administration for this relief work. Mr. Abdul Fida Karim, District Coordinator-Nayagarh, Mr.Chakradhar Das, ADCNuagaon, Mr.Biswaranjan Panda, ADC-Odagaon; Mr.Somanath Dora, Ms. Gitanjali Mishra and Mr. Tapan Baliarsingh, all Area Coordinators and Community Organisers of Nuagaon are the staff members of BISWA , who coordinated the relief work there. This timely step by BISWA was praised by one and all there.
BISWA observed 'World Water Day' in its own customized way in the chairmanship of Mr. K.C.Malick, Chairman BISWA. Introducing the occasion, Mr. Shiv Prasad Meher, Manager Public Relations, explained the importance of water as well as initiatives taken by BISWA in the water sector. He said BISWA is able to lodge its presence in almost all the sectors of uses of water. Starting from potable water for domestic use, it has covered community participation in water management, water harvesting as well as rain
w a t e r harvesting structure and last but not the least water for irrigation purpose, he detailed. The function was inaugurated by Mr. Malick with his inaugural speech. He briefly narrated various functions of the organisation in the water sector with its impact on the community. Two guests from Hindusthan UniLever Limited, Mr. Shahrukh Tavadia, Area Manager Social Partnership & Mr. Partho Raychoudhury, Officer Social Partnership were invited to participate in that function & 2
spoke to the occasion. 'PureIt', a product from Hindusthan UniLever Limited, was put for demonstration on the occasion. BISWA is engaged in the social marketing of the product to promote safe & healthy water at community level through it's self help groups. Mr. Prasant Sahu, AGM (Operation) & Mr. Mihir Nath, Sambalpur District Coordinator described the various initiatives taken by BISWA in the water sector at community level.

Ta r g e t e d Intervention Project in collaboration with Odisha State AIDS Control Society organised a workshop on advocacy and networking with p o l i c e administration at Muniguda on 2nd April 2009. The workshop took place at the Muniguda police station premises. The very purpose of the programme was to create a support environment in Muniguda block to reduce discrimination, stigma and taboo from mind of people about HIV/AIDS. It was also meant to create awareness among different stakeholders about the concerned programme. Mr. Nitish Kumar, IPS, Additional Superintendent
of Police of Rayagada district inaugurated the workshop and also spoke to the occasion. Ms Kalyani Das, Ta r g e t e d Intervention Project Manager hosted the function on behalf of BISWA there. About ten police officers in the leadership of Mr. Amarendra Sandha, Inspector in-Charge of the police station participated in it. It was decided in that meeting that similar programmes are to be organised at Gram Panchayat level to create lobby for advocacy there, so that all the local Panchayati Raj Institution members may take active participation. With such an effort the intervention may penetrate into deeper levels of the society, it was expected there.
M r. Laxmidhar Mishra, Special Raportteur, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), paid a visit to BISWA on 09.04.2009. He was accompanied by Dr. Nilamadhab Rath, a senior psychiatrist from Veer Surendra Sai Medical College, Burla. A staff meeting of BISWA was organised at BTI on that occasion that was presided by Mr. Shiv Prasad Meher, Manager Public Relations. He also delivered a formal welcome speech in the honor of Mr. Mishra. He was flanked by Mr. Prasant Sahu, AGM (Operation) and Mr. Pabitra Mishra, AGM (Planning) on the dais. Ms Bani Mohapatra, Deputy Manager Programmes facilitated the visit of the guests. Both the guests were also felicitated on the occasion after that warm welcome. Mr. Bhawani Mishra shed light on various initiatives taken by BISWA in the fields of social developments with linking them to human rights. Dr. Rath shared his experiences with BISWA in the field of social development in general and in the field of mental health in particular. Speaking to the occasion Mr. Laxmidhar Mishra shared information on various components of functions of NHRC in India. He highlighted the main points those are very often overlooked while working in the fields of human rights in our country. He also shed light on what an NGO like BISWA can do in this field. His erudite speech was appreciated by one & all. A formal vote of thanks was proposed by Mr. Meher with concluding the meeting. Then both the visiting guests went to look over the functional ability of SWADHAR in BISWA. They interacted with the inmates with taking feedback on their welfare. They keenly observed how the inmates with mental problems are being managed Ms. Lalita Chhura, Superintendent of SWADHAR and Ms. Bani Mohapatra as the Counsellor of SWADHAR patiently answered all the questions asked by the guests and satisfied them.
