Elec 321 - 3

This document summarizes a student's lab report on building a 5 bus power system in PowerWorld Simulator. The student created a 5 bus system model with transformers based on provided component data tables. Simulations showed one bus voltage was too low. To correct this, the student added a capacitor to the low voltage bus, raising the voltage to an acceptable level. When the line from bus 5 to 2 was opened, the system became unstable due to low generated voltage. The capacitor improved the power factor and voltage profile of the network.

1. Objective The objectives of this experiment are: 1. To build a 5 bus system involving transformers. 2. To include a PV bus in a power system 3. To learn how to install a capacitor for voltage correction. 2. Background Information PowerWorld Simulator is an interactive power system simulation package designed to simulate high voltage power system operation on a time frame ranging from several minutes to several days. The professional version contains a highly effective power flow analysis package capable of efficiently solving systems of up to 100,000 buses, but the free student version is with limited capabilities. The main feature of the software is its intuitive user friendly GUI. Apart from the standard features, the software have the ability for upgrading with several add-ons which is utility based. 3. Equipment Required Power World Student Version 17. Computer with Windows 7 4. Schematic Diagram

5. Procedure: At first by using the parameters given in Table 1, 2 and 3 the model shown in figure 01 is created. After that using the power world simulator the model has been simulated and observation of the voltage values in each bus were taken. The simulation figure is shown in figure 02. Next the per unit voltage value was increased by using a capacitor at 2nd bus. The model is shown in figure 03. With the capacitor in circuit, trip the line from bus 5 to bus 2, which is shown in figure 04.

Figure 04: Five bus system power network simulation without connecting from bus 5 to 2 7. Discussion a. From the figure 2 we can see that the per unit voltages at bus 1,5,3 and 4 are acceptable. But at bus 2 per unit voltage is .83, which is too low. In this case load at bus 2 will not get desire voltage. b. To improve the voltage at bus 2 we connect a 200 Mvar capacitor in the 2nd bus. And observe that per unit voltage increased from .83 to .96, which is acceptable for our load. We can increased the voltage up to 1 p.u by increasing the capacitor, but in this case the cost will be higher. c. As we can see from figure 04 that the system is crashed when we trip the line from bus 5 to 2. This happens because of the generated voltage is less than the desired voltage. d. Uses of capacitor in a power network: Capacitor mainly used in a power network to improve the power factor. There are many ways to improve the power factor, but the capacitor method is cheaper and easy to build. Synchronous capacitor: Synchronous capacitor are mainly called synchronous condenser. Its characteristics matches the characteristics of synchronous motor. But the main purpose of this element is to adjust the condition on the electric power transmission grid. By adjusting the transmission grid it improves the power factor on the bus.
