How to Add or Delete SIMS .

net Shortcuts

Applicable to SIMS .net version

7.20 onwards.

Permissions required
Any user can add or delete shortcuts to/from their version of SIMS .net.

Introduction
Shortcuts can be added to the Shortcut Bar, which is displayed on the left-hand side of the SIMS .net main
window. The shortcut bar can contain several panels allowing you to switch between various sets of pre-
defined shortcuts.
Two types of shortcut can be created – internal or external. Internal shortcuts allow you to quickly move to an
area of SIMS .net without having to select from the required menus. External shortcuts allow you to launch a
specific application (such as Microsoft® Excel) or a specific file within that application (such as specific Excel
spreadsheet).

NOTE: You must create a new shortcut panel before adding shortcuts.

Adding a shortcut panel

1. Click the New button on the Shortcuts toolbar and select New Panel.
New button

2. A panel is displayed labelled <NEW>. Replace the label with the required panel name and then click
off the panel to accept the name you have entered.

Adding an external shortcut

It is possible to create a shortcut to any file, such as an .EXE file (to launch an application) or other file types
such as .DOC to launch a specific document within its associated application (e.g. Microsoft Word).

NOTE: You can add a shortcut to SIMS Launcher and any SIMS module that does not run from Launcher.

1. Select the Shortcut Panel to which the shortcut will be added by clicking the required panel name.

NOTE: The SIMS panel is reserved for shortcuts to SIMS SQL modules only. To add shortcuts to
any other applications, you should create a new panel and add them there. Please see the previous
section for more information.

2. Click the New button down arrow on the shortcuts toolbar and select New External Shortcut.
3. From the Select a File dialog, navigate to the location of the shortcut that you want to define. By
default, Executable Files will be selected in the File Types drop-down list, but this can be changed
to All Files if required.
4. Click the Open button to attach the specified shortcut. A named shortcut icon is displayed in the
Shortcut Panel.
5. To launch your specified application or file, double-click the shortcut icon.
6. To change the name of shortcut, select the icon to highlight it. Click the name until a flashing cursor
appears and then type the new name.
7. Click off the shortcut to accept the name entered.

Adding an internal shortcut

Internal shortcuts can be created to save time navigating around the system. If you are a SEN Coordinator
for example, you may find it beneficial to set up an internal shortcut to Focus | Pupil (or Student) | Special
Educational Needs.
1. Select the Shortcut Panel to which the shortcut will be added by clicking the required panel name.
2. Click the New button down arrow on the toolbar and select New Internal Shortcut.
3. Navigate using the menus to the required area of the software. An icon will appear labelled
according to the menu route selected.
4. To move to the specified area of the application, double-click the icon.

Deleting shortcuts/shortcut panels

To delete any unwanted shortcuts, highlight the shortcut, click the Delete button and select Delete Shortcut
from the pop-up menu. It is not possible to delete default shortcuts.
Delete button

WARNING: Any shortcuts on the shortcut panel will also be deleted.

To delete any unwanted Shortcut Panels:

1. Ensure you have moved any shortcuts you want to keep to another panel.
2. Highlight the panel, click the Delete button and select Delete Panel from the pop-up menu.
