MONTGOMERY COUNTY PLANNING DEPARTMENT

THE MARYLAND-NATIONAL CAPITAL PARK AND PLANNING COMMISSION

February 26, 2009

Dear Friend of Historic Preservation:

The Montgomery County Historic Preservation Commission (HPC) will award a second round of 2009
historic preservation grants and is now accepting proposals for consideration.  With support from the
Montgomery County Council and the County Executive, $19,860 is available to be awarded in a second
grant round for historic preservation‐related projects to be completed during 2009.

Nonprofit organizations and local governments are eligible to apply.  Applicants must match grants
dollar‐for‐dollar with cash or in‐kind contributions.  Eligible projects include, but are not limited to:

• development and installation of historic district and historic resource signs;
• walking tours;
• handbooks, design guidelines and/or brochures related to historic districts or individual historic
resources;
• history/historic site brochures or books;
• feasibility studies for restoration or preservation of buildings, sites, and historical artifacts;
• public education projects such as historical and archeological surveys, lectures, videos,
workshops, web site design, oral history taping/transcriptions, photographic displays or other
types of exhibits pertaining to local history; and
• oral histories.
For this grant round, the HPC has put a special emphasis on projects: 1) that develop organizational
outreach and educational capacities through enhancements to websites or other technologies, and 2)
that are ready to start immediately and have a scope of work that may be completed on an expedited
basis.

Applicants should be submitted to: Historic Preservation Commission, M‐NCPPC, 8787 Georgia Avenue,
Silver Spring, MD 20910.  Applications must be received by March 23, 2009.  The HPC will evaluate all
complete applications and notify applicants of grant award decisions by May 1, 2009.  The HPC reserves
the right to modify the amount and scope of services of the original proposal. After the decision by the
HPC, the Maryland‐National Capital Park and Planning Commission will enter into a grant agreement
with each group for the planned work.   Please note that all approved grantees are required to carry
adequate insurance, as specified by Article 15 of the County's General Conditions of Contract.  Also,
grantees will be required to provide display materials and/or volunteer time as part of at least one HPC
sponsored educational event in 2009 or 2010.

 Funding through the Historic Preservation Grant Fund can enhance your organization’s contributions to
the preservation and understanding of the County’s irreplaceable cultural legacy, and I encourage you to
consider applying.  See www.montgomeryplanning.org/historic/grants/Grants.shtm for application
