Electrical Works: Symbols

The document discusses various electrical symbols used in electrical design plans to represent different electrical components. It provides examples of common outlet symbols like single receptacles, duplex receptacles, and ground-fault circuit interrupter outlets. Switch symbols explained include single pole switches, three-way switches, dimmer switches, and timed switches. Service and equipment symbols outlined are transformers, disconnect switches, motor starters, panelboards, utility meters, generators, and circuit breakers. Fixture and circuitry symbols mentioned are for fixtures and conduit.

ELECTRICAL WORKS

Symbols
SYMBOLS These electrical symbols are used to indicate the parts of an electrical plan. Occasionally, the need may arise for a symbol that has not been developed (such as a symbol for a newer energy-saving or energy management device). In this case, the designer may create new symbol for the electrical design plan, as long as it is added to the symbols list included with the plan. Electrical design plans may be included as a separate document within a complete set of building plans. To identify the electrical plans, each page of the electrical design plan is labeled and numbered: E1, E2, E3 and so forth.

Outlet Symbols Outlet - devices that allow electrically operated devices to be connected to the primary alternating current (AC) power supply. Single Receptacle - also called a single outlet or single electrical socket, is one which receives only one electrical plug. Duplex Receptacle - an outlet that receives two electrical plugs. Double Duplex Receptacle - also called a quad receptacle or quad outlet that receives four electrical plugs. Waterproof Receptacle - an outlet enclosed in a box to protect it from water coming outside. Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter (GFCI) - is an electrical wiring device that disconnects a circuit whenever it detects that the electric current is not balanced between the energized conductor and the return neutral conductor. Triplex Receptacle - an outlet that receives three electrical plugs.

Switch Symbols Switch - is an electrical component that can break an electrical circuit, interrupting the current or diverting it from one conductor to another. Single Pole Switch - turn a light, receptacle or device on and off from a single location. A characteristic of a single pole toggle switch is that it has an on and off marking on the switch, something you will not find on a three or four way switch. Three-way and Four-way Switch - make it possible to control a light from multiple locations. Dimmer Switch - a device used to vary the brightness of a light. By decreasing or increasing the RMS voltage and, hence, the mean power to the lamp, it is possible to vary the intensity of the light output. Weatherproof Switch - like waterproof receptacle, its a switch enclosed in a box to protect it from the elements outside. Timed Switch - is a timer that operates an electric switch controlled by the timing mechanism. Key Operated Switch - is a switch that can be activated only by a key. Key switches are usually used in situations where access needs to be restricted to the switch's functions. Ceiling Pull Switch - is a switch that is actuated by means of a chain or string. An electric pull switch is attached to a toggle type switch: one pull to switch on and next pull to switch off.

Service and Equipment Symbols Transformer - is a power converter that transfers energy between two electrical circuits by inductive coupling between two or more windings. Disconnect Switch - is a switch which has the capability to interrupt power to an electrical circuit or to a group of electrical circuits. Motor Starter - are used mainly to switch motors manually ON/OFF and protect them and the installation fuse less against short-circuit, overload and phase failures. Panelboard - is an element of a system used to supply electricity. The panel boards primary function is to divide an electrical feed into supplementary circuits while providing a shielding or protective fuse for each circuit in an enclosed space. Utility Meter - is a device that measures the amount of electric energy consumed by a residence, business, or an electrically powered device. Electricity meters are typically calibrated in billing units, the most common one being the kilowatt hour [kWh]. Generator - is a device that converts mechanical energy to electrical energy. A generator forces electric charge (usually carried by electrons) to flow through an external electrical circuit. The source of mechanical energy may be a reciprocating or turbine steam engine, water falling through a turbine or waterwheel, an internal combustion engine, a wind turbine, a hand crank, compressed air, or any other source of mechanical energy. Circuit Breaker - is an automatically operated electrical switch designed to protect an electrical circuit from damage caused by overload or short circuit. Its basic function is to detect a fault condition and, by interrupting continuity, to immediately discontinue electrical flow.

Fixture Symbols Fixtures - is an electrical device used to create artificial light by use of an electric lamp.

Circuitry Symbols Conduit - is an electrical piping system used for protection and routing of electrical wiring. Electrical conduit may be made of metal, plastic, fiber, or fired clay. Conduit is generally installed by electricians at the site of installation of electrical equipment.
