How To Make A Recycled Paper Wallet
By Jie Qi Materials and Supplies: 2 squares of paper the same size per pocket (so three pockets = 6 squares of the same size) to make the sides of each pocket NOTE: for the dimensioning see step 6 1 large piece of paper per pocket to make the actual inside of the pocket, the width of the paper will be the width of the pocket. Folded in half (to make a rectangle), the height of the rectangle must be longer than one side of the square. NOTE: for the dimensioning see step 8 1 large piece of cardstock for the cover (make sure it is large enough to wrap around your wallet twice) 1 piece of decorative paper to cover the magnet (this piece is the same size as the paper used to make the inside of the pocket). 1 flat refrigerator magnet Rubber cement or white glue Tape Scissors
Optional: Decorative paper to line the pockets (the more layers of paper you use, the stronger the wallet!) Clear plastic laminating sheets (very wide tape, basically) to laminate the wallet, waterproofing it.
Part 1: Making a pocket 1. Take a square piece of paper and fold it in half (into a rectangle). 2. Fold the edges toward the center crease
6. This should be what the unfolded paper looks like. Angle D and angle E should be equal. The distance from A to C is how far the pocket will open. The length of A to B and A to C are the same, and this will be the depth of pocket. 7. Repeat steps 1 to 5 with another square, to make the two sides of the pocket. 8. Take the large piece of paper and fold it in half to make a rectangle. The height of this folded rectangle must be longer than distance of A to B in step 6.
9. Insert the two side squares into the sides of this rectangle so that the edges of the rectangle line up with the creases A to B and A to C. Make sure that the sides are as far down as possible, so that point B is at the creased edge of the rectangle.
10. Glue the four side flaps down to the sides of the rectangle, to form a pocket.
11. Fold the flaps extending past the top of the pocket down so that they dont stick out beyond the pocket anymore.
12. Completed Pocket! Now many as many pockets as you want. :) Make sure theyre all the same size!
Part II: Assembling two pockets Option 1: No hidden flaps 1. Insert the flap of one pocket into the next pocket and glue the flap down. Done!
Option 2: Flaps hidden 1. Place the pockets so that they face each other and match up the flaps. Glue the flaps in place
2. Fold the corners of the flaps toward the center, making triangles. Glue these triangles down.
Part III: Dividing a pocket 1. Make a pocket of the same size as the other pockets.
2. Fold the pocket in half where you want to create the division.
4. Place the pockets so that the two glued sides are facing each other
5. Place these inside an existing pocket so that they fit snugly. You may need to cut a bit from the inside pockets so that they fit inside the outside pocket.
Part IV: Making the cover 1. Place the pockets inside the cover and fold the bottom of the cover upward so that the flap is a little larger than the pocket. Make another crease a bit further up. The result is a little trough that holds the pockets snugly.
2. Unfold the trough and fold the two sides of the cover in so that it is slightly larger than the width of the pockets.
3. Refold the trough and fold the top flap down over the wallet (the idea is to mold the cover into the shape of the final cover). Fold any extra paper on the flap down, so that the flap doesnt extend too far. The result will be how the final wallet looks when its closed.
4. Take the flat sheet magnet and cut two rectangles so that they are slightly smaller than the top flap (the larger the magnets, the stronger the closure).
5. Open the cover of the wallet and unfold the trough. Take one magnet and tape it magnetic side (as opposed to the picture side) down onto the inside of the bottom flap.
6. Glue the pockets in place over this flap. The magnet will be between the pockets and the cover and the magnetic side will be facing away from the pockets.
7. Place tape on the other magnet, sticky side of the tape facing the magnetic side.
8. Lay the magnet down onto the outside of the trough. The sticky side of the tape will be facing up. Slide the magnet around until you feel the strongest attraction between the two magnets (there will be differences in the attraction of the magnets due to polarity).
9. Fold the top flap of the cover down and press so that the tape sticks firmly to the top cover. When you open the top flap of the cover, the magnet should be stuck to it.
10. Unfold the very top edge and place it over the magnet. Glue into place.
11. Glue the decorative paper over the inside of the top cover, to hide the top magnet.
12. Glue the free side of the pockets onto the decorative paper.
