What is Varmakalai?
Varma kalai is the art of studying anatomical weaknesses and devising methods to attack these in self defence both bare handed or with the use of specialized weapons such as the varmakol. The four major branches of varmakalai are 1. Varmathallu - The art of striking the varmam and developing the physical fitness and conditioning to do so 2. Varmapidi - The art of grappling using the varmam as handles 3. Varmamarundugal - Preparation of external oils and oral medicines to cure attacks to the varmams 4. Varmathadavu - Curing of varmam attacks by massage and pressure

Instructors
Ashwin Mohan and Varma Asan Rajendran Krishnaraj. With a zeal to understand the ancient martial art Varma Kalai and to preserve it, Ashwin was introduced to Rajendran Krishnaraj, from whom he learnt Varma Kalai and its nuances and was certified to teach. Apart from Varma Kalai, Ashwin has been practising, learning and teaching different martial arts for over 2 decades now. Varma Asan (guru) Rajendran Krishnaraj is a current lineage holder of this art his Asan was Shivalinga Nadar from Nagerkoil, who could trace his varmakalai lineage to Sage Agastiyar. Rajendran is a journalist by profession and is based in Coimbatore. He has also served as a Personal Bodyguard and is active in politics.
