1.1 Introduction: Language is a tool of communication. Without learning the essential skills of communication in a proper way, people cannot make their communication effective. Therefore acquiring communication skills is a must particularly in this age of Globalization. A Communicative Approach considers language not only in terms of its structures (Grammar and vocabulary) but also in terms of the communicative functions its performs. Little wood. *Characteristic Features of the Communicative Approach: Following characteristics marks all communicative syllabuses. 1) They all aim to make learner attain communicative competence, i.e. use language accurately and appropriately. 2) The prime focuses on the learner. The teachers are just a facilitator a person who manages the environment of the materials, which will help the students become autonomous learners. 3) Communicative syllabuses rely on authentic materials. 4) The tasks set age purposeful and meaningful. This is turn means that a communicative task can be judged immediately by teachers and its success by the students. 5) Communicative syllabuses emphasize the functions of language rather than the rules. 6) Communicative tasks aim to make learners fluent, as well as accurate in their use of target language. There are various methods and approaches of teaching English at Secondary level. They are: The Structural Approach, The Aural Oral Approach, Grammar Translation Method, and The Direct Method. (Natural / Reformed), Bilingual Method, Oral / Situational Approach. The Communicative Approach: Principles of Communicative Approach; 1) Communicative Principle, 2) Task Principles, 3) Meaningful Principle, 4) Motivation, 5) Peer group communication. Role of teacher in Communicative Approach: 1) As a planner, 2) As a manager, 3) As a provider, 4) As a coordinator, 5) Co-communicator, 6) As a Diagnostician. Steps in teaching Communicative Approach: 1) Pre teaching planning: a) Linguistic items, b) New Vocabulary, c) Activities and support material. 2) During teaching planning: a) Preparation, b) Presentation, c) Practice, d) Production. 3) After teaching planning: a) Planning activities, b) Motivation for communication, c) Pair group work, d) Use of Audio visual aids, e) Black board work, and f) Teachers preparation. Secondary Curriculum frame work: English (as a third language) Text book of Std IX, and teachers hand book has been prepared with the help of four basic skills which are Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing and Communication. 1.2 Statement of the problem: A Study of Communicative Approach of Teaching English to STD IX 1.3. Significance and Need of the Study: The study under taken for research is important

because it will help the teachers of English to develop and improve their methods of teaching and improvement in communicative acquisition skills of the learners. 1.4. Objectives of the Research: 1) To study the communicative approach of teaching English to Std. IX in Beed District. 2) To study difficulties of using communicative approach to Std. IX in Beed District. 3) To suggest ways and means to improve the communication skills in teaching English to Std. IX. 1.5 Scope and limitations of the Research: The research study aims at the study of communicative approach of teaching English to Std. IX in Beed District. 1) The research is restricted to Beed District only. 2) The research is restricted to Std IX Marathi medium teachers only. 3) The research study deals with Communicative Approach in English language teaching only. 1.6. Research Procedure: The Researcher has selected Descriptive- Survey Method as the method of study. The survey method is classified into different methods of study. Among those methods of study the researcher has selected School Survey Method. 1.7. Sample of the research: In this research Researcher use probability - random sampling- lottery method. According to this method Researcher has chosen 188 secondary English schoolteachers randomly from 159 Marathi medium schools. 1.8. Tool of the research: Researcher prepared and standardizes the questionnaire, and collects these questionnaires from 188 teachers. 1.9. Major Findings and Conclusions of the Research: 1. Almost all the teachers converse in English with their colleagues. 2. Majority of the teachers uses English language to talk with their colleagues. 3. The teachers know objectives of English as a third language. 4. Most of the teachers use Communicative Approach to teach English language to Std. IX. 5.Almost all the teachers use English words and orders to give instructions to students in class. 6. Almost all the teachers use teaching aids in their classroom teach-
ing. 7. Most of the teachers sometimes use Audio Visual Aids and some of the teachers use Audio Visual Aids as per its need 8. Most of the teachers use Question-Answer Method to describe places, events and persons. 9. Most of the teachers assign task to pairs in the class. 10. Most of the teachers use mobile pictures, audio-visual aids, and use question answer method for developing various skills. 11. Most of the teachers use direct method to develop listening skill with the help of Audio Visual Aids. 12. Most of the teacher evaluates the listening skill of the students by asking them to tell the stories, short conversations in the class. 13. Most of the teachers develop the speaking skill of the students by giving them situation to speak. 14. To develop speaking skill of the students, teachers use group discussion, speak on a topic, picture lessons and conversation. 15. Most the teachers evaluate speaking skill by telling them to speak for him. 16. Most of the teachers develop the reading skill of the students by giving them intensive reading and asking them to read the newspaper cuttings. 17. Most of the teachers develop the reading skill of the students by assigning and give proper suggestions for better pronunciation. 18. All most all the teachers evaluate the reading skill of the students by asking them for loud reading. 19. Most of the teachers develop writing skill of their students by asking them to write story with given points and by taking essay competition. 20. Most of the students are able to write essay, leave application in their own words. 21. Most of the teachers evaluate writing skill of students by writing an essay with the help of questions. 22. All most all the teachers use Functional Method to grammar to IX STD in class. 23.Most of the teachers teach structure with the help of substitution tables. 24. Most of the teachers teach conversation providing ample opportunity to converse on topic, which is from the world of their experiences. 25. Almost all the teachers have the problems of Bilingual method i.e. students affection towards their mother tongue and students poor response about improving vocabulary and their own expression power. 1.10 Recommendations: After this study researcher wants to give some recommendations for the use of communicative ap-

proach. 1) English teachers must speak in English with their colleges and students. 2) While teaching communication skills to STD IX teachers must use Audio Visual Aids and other teaching aids also. 3) Teachers most use communicative approach in classroom and out side the classroom in the school. 4) Inculcate the habits and reading, writing in the students. 5) Teacher must develop his own technique for teaching communicative approach. 6) Teachers must accept new innovations teaching leaning process. 7) New innovative methods of English teaching should be in-
troduced in the curriculum. 8) Teachers should be develop the Listening, Speaking, Reading, and Writing skills of the students along with Communication. 9) Teachers should enable the students to communicative in English in the classroom only. 10) Teacher should enable the students to develop their written competence and communication ability. 11) Teacher should be able to use computer and Internet to improve Global understanding and students. 12) Computer based learning i.e. E- learning should be introduced in the schools.
