Subbases Denition: Let X be a linearly ordered set and a, b P X. Then the sets p8, bq tx P X : x bu, are called the open rays determined by a, b. 1. (a) Let X be a linearly ordered set with at least 2 elements. Show that S tp8, bq : b P Xu Y tpa, 8q : a P Xu is a subbasis which is (in general) not a basis for the order topology on X. (b) Find a subbasis which is not a basis for the conite topology on an innite set X. Interior, Closure, Boundary Denition: Let X be a topological space and A X. Then BA : A X XzA is called the boundary of A. 2. (a) Prove that the closure map cl : PpXq PpXq, A A satises the axioms of Kuratowski from exercise 6 on sheet 1. (b) Prove that for any subset A of a topological space (i) A is open A AzBA, (ii) A is open and closed BA . (c) Prove or disprove that the following identities hold for arbitrary subsets A, B in a topological space: (i) BBA BA, (ii) A A , (iii) BA BA. 3. Find the interior and the boundary of the following subsets of R2 endowed with the standard topology seen in class: (a) A : tpx, yq | y 0u, (b) B : tpx, yq | x 0 and y 0u, (c) C : A Y B, (d) D : tpx, yq | x P Qu, (e) E : tpx, yq | 0 x2 y 2 1u,
1 (f) F : tpx, yq | x 0 and y x u.

Continuous Functions 4. (a) Let X, Y be topological spaces, and f : X Y . Show that if txu X is open, then f is continuous at x. (b) Let pX, T q, pX 1 , T 1 q, and pX 2 , T 2 q be topological spaces, f : X X 1 , g : X 1 X 2 , and x P X. Prove that if f is continuous at x and g is continuous at f pxq, then g f is continuous at x. Conclude that if f, g are continuous, then g f also is continuous. 5. (a) Let 8 a b 8. Show that pa, bq is homeomorphic to p0, 1q, and if a, b are nite, then ra, bs is homeomorphic to r0, 1s. (b) Give an example of a function R R which is continuous at exactly one point. Denition: Let X be a topological space and txn unPN a sequence in X. Then txn unPN is said to converge to x P X, if for every open neighborhood U of x there exists an N P N such that @n N : xn P U . 6. (a) Let O and O1 be topologies on the same set X, and let idX : pX, Oq pX, O1 q be the identity map on X. Show that idX is continuous i O is ner than O1 , and that idX is a homeomorphism i O O1 . (b) Let f : X Y be a continuous map. Show that f is sequentially continuous, i.e. if txn unPN converges to x in X, then tf pxn qunPN converges to f pxq in Y . (c) Let X pR, Tc q, where Tc is the cocountable topology. Show that a sequence txn unPN converges to x in X i there is an N P N such that @n N : xn x. Use this to show that the converse to (b) is not true by constructing a counterexample. (Hint: Use (a).)
