COCHIN BIENNALE AN ENERGY BOOSTER TO KERALA TOURISM

Tourism sector has become a booming economic sector of our country. Unlike our neighbor countries, India has got a vast collection of tourism products. Rich historical important places, yet unexplored virgin beaches and destinations, calm climate, cuisines etc are the highlights of Indian tourism. India government has taken many programs to promote the Indian tourism. Tourism policy of India government set the frame work for every tourism promotion activities. Cochin Muziriz Biennale is one among such tourism promotion activities. Biennale is an Italian word, which is used to describe an event, which is happens in every two year.

The first Biennale was Venice Biennale held in the year 1895. Later on, many Biennales are taken place. So Paulo Biennial of Brazil, Biennale of Sydney, Havana Biennial, Lyon Biennial of France are some of the major biennale.

India boasts a robust history of hosting triennales beginning 1968 when the legendary Mulk Raj Anand leveraged his clout to bring the global art to India, the Kochi-Muziris Biennale that opens at the culturally-rich Fort Kochi on 12/12/12 is the first of its kind for more than one reason, placing equal thrust on contemporary art and traditional folk and classical arts from various parts of India. Muziris is one of the most important names in the Kerala history. The port of Muziris is mentioned in various Indian classics like Sangham literature. The studies and excavations revealed that an old port was situated in the present region of Kodungallor and Paravoor. According to the historical record Muziris was the major financial centre as well as a major sea port.

Kerala had always been there in the tourism plan of many of the foreign tourist. But many of the tourists had never even heard of Kerala until the Biennale. Cochin Muziris biennale is a true platform for rejuvenate the tourism activities of Kerala.

Over 8o artists from 24 countries have been presenting their installations, art, painting, films etc. There are 14 venues spread across Fort Kochi, Mattancherry and Ernakulam. Cochin Biennale is providing a great platform for shaping an alternative cultural discourse for political thinkers and art lovers.

There are so many foreigners are coming to Kerala for seeing and to perform in the Cochin-Muziriz biennale which will definitely boost up the Kerala tourism enormously. Thereby Kerala can build a very strong economy also. We can hope that within a few years Kerala will become the most preferred tourism destination.
