LENT & LENTEN REGULATIONS

Lent is a Liturgical Season filled with deep meaning and great richness for we who choose to journey along with Christ on this holy path of spiritual renewal.
1. Abstinence from meats is to be observed by all Catholics 14 years old and older on Ash Wednesday and on all Fridays of Lent. 2. Fasting is to be observed on Ash Wednesday by all Catholics who are 18 years of age but not yet 59. 3. The special Paschal Fast and Abstinence are prescribed for Good Friday and encouraged for Holy Saturday. 4. On these two days of fast and abstinence, only one full meatless meal is allowed. Two other meatless meals, sufficient to maintain strength, may be taken according to each ones needs, but together they should not equal another full meal. Eating between meals is not permitted on these two days, but liquids, including milk and fruit juices are allowed. When health or ability to work would be seriously affected, the law does not oblige. 5. Lent is the Principal Season of Penance in the Christian year. All of the faithful are strongly urged to develop and follow a program of voluntary self-denial (in addition to following the Lenten regulations), serious prayer, and a performance of works of charity and mercy. By the threefold discipline of fasting, almsgiving and prayer the Church keeps Lent from Ash Wednesday until the evening of Holy Thursday. All of the faithful and the catechumens should undertake serious practice of these three traditions. Failure to observe any penitential days at all or a substantial number of such days or the law of fast and abstinence must be considered serious. In the Roman Catholic Church, Lent officially ends at sundown on the 28th of March, (Holy Thursday), with the beginning of the Mass of the Lords Supper (the beginning of the

Easter Triduum - a three day long feast of Gods Love). Lent is a forty-day period before Easter. It begins on Ash Wednesday. In some ways Sundays are different, because Sundays also commemorate the Resurrection, as well as prepare us for the Sacraments of Initiation and Holy Week. Lent begins this year on the 13th of February and ends on the 30th of March 2013, with the Easter Vigil. The decorations and vestments are Violet (Rose on Laetare Sunday, the 4th Sunday of Lent and Red for the Passion). Lent is a season of soul-searching and repentance. It is a season for reflection and taking stock. Lent originated in the very earliest days of the Church as a preparatory time for Easter, when the faithful rededicated themselves in the faith and when catechumens were instructed in the faith and prepared for baptism. By observing the forty days of Lent, the individual Christian imitates Jesus withdrawal into the wilderness for forty days. There are three basic parts of the Season of Lent. The first two and a half weeks, starting with Ash Wednesday, the First and second Sundays of Lent until just before the third Sunday of Lent, were traditionally called the time of the Order of the Penitent. It was a tradition at the beginning of Lent to go to Confession in order to be closer to our Lord as the Season of Lent progressed and to set a good example to those preparing for the Easter Sacraments. The second two weeks plus - focus on those in the Catechumenate and their preparation for Baptism, Confirmation and First Eucharist. This period of Lent is called the Order of the Catechumenate and includes the Third, Fourth and Fifth Sundays of Lent, and the celebration of the Scrutinys during Sunday Mass. The last period of Lent begins technically on the Fifth Sunday of Lent (although the RCIA rituals take a stronger presence on this day) is called Passiontide and the focus of Lent now turns toward a more intense remembering of finale leading up to the death of our Lord. Before the restoration of the Catechumenate with Vatican II, for many centuries the Fifth Sunday of Lent, the Passion of the Lord according to Matthew was read. These readings are now moved to Palm Sunday, the season culminating just before the beginning of the Mass of the Lords Supper. In Lent it is important to receive to the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

Reflection: The Fasts of the Rich are the Feasts of the Poor!

Happy New Year!!! The St. Vincent de Paul truck will be in our parking lot the weekend of February 16th & 17th so gather up all your donations and bring them to Mass with you that weekend! Our volunteers will be waiting for you at the truck to help you unload. We will accept. Clothing, shoes, linens and books in good or bad condition. Unusable clothing, shoes, linens and even books generate income for the needy because they are sold for rags or in bulk. Yes, it is okay to bring us your smelly old gym shoes! Small housewares (toasters, blenders, mixers, etc.) Electronics. The SVdP Thrift Shops are now electronic recycling centers! They will accept your old televisions, stereos, computers, and equipmentworking or not! Your donations go to the St. Vincent de Paul Thrift Shops where much of your donations are given away free to needy families in the community. Some are sold at reasonable prices at the thrift shops so that needy families can shop with dignity. If you have any large items or furniture you would like to donate, you can call and schedule a pick up at your home at 630-231-4658.

As we conclude our 2012 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal, I am very grateful for your generosity. Our 2012 goal was $92,438 and we had net gifts of $86,405. Even thought we fell short of our goal, your willingness to support the CMAA shows that you recognize the importance of supporting the larger church. Thank you again for supporting the CMAA.

Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal - 2013 Please Make a Generous Gift

This week you are asked to review the Annual Appeal tabloid that you will receive with your bulletin today. The Annual Appeal campaign is much different than a one-time, special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift payable over 10 months. A significant gift to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal will touch the lives of many others in a very positive way. The Annual Appeal provides a significant portion of the budget of the Diocese of Joliet. Most dioceses in the country conduct an appeal, once a year, to help with the costs of providing services and programs to their parishes and people. The Diocese of Joliet is no exception. As you review the work enabled by your contribution to the CMAA, please reflect on Gods gifts to you. He has given you all that you have. Your gifts to our parish, to the diocese, and to the work of the church throughout the world should be given in gratitude for the continuing gifts that God gives you. He never forgets you. Sometimes it is difficult to envision how one pledge can help an organization the size of our diocese, how it can make a real difference. But each pledge does make a difference because all parishes participate in the campaign, and the gifts of many enable our diocese to deliver needed education, ministry, and services. Our combined gifts not only signify our gratitude to God, they glorify Him by enabling the work of our diocese. If you received your pledge form in the mail, please complete it and mail it back or bring it to Mass next weekend. For those of you who did not receive a mailing or have not had time to respond to it, we will conduct our in-pew pledge process at all Masses next weekend. After our parish exceeds its CMAA goal of $93,147.00 in paid pledges, 50% of any additional funds are returned for use in our parish. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

A letter and update from the Alex Novak Family Dear St. John the Baptist Parish/School, 7th grade Girls Basketball Team, St. Francis High School, and friends, Thank you for your continued support and prayers for Alex Novak and our family. We wish to express our great appreciation and gratitude for your fundraising efforts (Winfield Pub Crawl, Kids for Kids Fantasy Football, SJB 7th grade girls basketball team, dress down days), which have been used to buy ramps to roll Alex into the house, the Hoyer lift that transfers Alex from bed to his wheelchair, and to cover co-payments for his numerous daily medications and his new wheelchair that was just delivered. Because of his muscle spasms, Alex has not made progress. Last week he finally received Botox injections to alleviate the spasms. The Botox seems to be helping, so hopefully Alex can start to progress with his physical therapy. We want to thank all who have visited Alex reading and speaking to him, students that came to sing Christmas carols, and people who have given Alex music CDs which he listens to daily. Alex is the most responsive on days he has visitors to stimulate him. We especially wish to thank Mike Zierk, President Bednar, Principal Kos, Fr. Tom, SJB & SFHS coaches and teachers for their fundraising efforts, prayers and visits. Future fundraisers include the K of C Fish Fry on Friday, February 22nd, 5-7:30p at St. Johns, Friday, March 8th, 5:30p-8:30p, a Karate Kick-a-thon at the Fitness Station in West Chicago, and Thursday, March28th, a Pub Crawl in Wheaton (organized by Mike Zierk), so come out to have some fun, good food, spirits and help support Alex. We extend our prayers to God and you for your continued support and prayers which help our family make it through one day at a time. If you wish to visit, please call first, 630-293-3964. Our address is: 29W043 Donald Ave., West Chicago (a blue split-level house). Thank you again. God Bless You, Donna, Larry, Raquel & Alex Novak

The St. Thomas Aquinas Faith Family, our 8th Grade teacher, Mrs. Char Klein, as well as the Sixth Grade and Eight Grade Children were in the Sanctuary. We celebrated the Feasts of the Presentation in the Temple (sometimes called the Purification of the Blessed Virgin Mary) or Candlemas. We blessed the church candles and had a wonderful procession around the Church with the children of the St. Thomas Faith Family. The Children and Teachers, as always, were a wonderful inspiration. We invite all to join our childrens Masses that are held on most Tuesdays at 1:40 pm (check the bulletin to make sure we
have it on the week you wish to attend).

Attention: Middle and High School Students . . .

Come Be a Part of Living Stations

We are inviting all 5th-12th grade students to participate in a re-enactment of the Passion of the Christ (Living Stations). What are Living Stations? Imagine the whole church dark, and then spotlights come on and you are transported back to Golgatha, where Jesus was nailed to the cross. Living stations recreates 14 stations. All the stations are acted out by students dressed in costumes of the era while a student narrates the scene. Therefore, most scenes require no learning of lines. Why be a part of it? It will be Lent, so do something wonderful for God. Plus, its a lot of fun, just ask any former cast members. Its also a great way to make friends and great memories.

THE STATIONS OF THE CROSS IN THE NEW CHURCH

Half of the Stations of the Cross in the New Church have been placed behind the Choir area and have not been accessible for prayer, and if you look at the order of their progression Jesus is carrying His Cross Backwards! So... we will be placing them on the side walls beneath the large When? stained glass windows in the body of the church where they Practices will take place in the Church on: 4:30p-5:30p were be in the right order, in brighter light and progressing Sunday, February 10:
