    Council appoints several positions, talks local market

    The Manchester Village Council approved several appointments, at their regular meeting Monday night. John Hinkley, Lou Way, Sarah Andrews and Ronald Milkey were reappointed to the Planning Commission. Dwayne Vailliencourt was reappointed to the Parks Commission, and Pat DuRussel reappointed as the village council representative to the parks commission. Other appointments included Jeff Wallace, the village manager, to serve as street administrator and zoning Inspector; Gary Weidmeyer as sewer inspector; Dale Behnke as building inspector; Doug Parr as electrical inspec-

    tor; and Coleman Deconick as plumbing and mechanical inspector. A visitor to the meeting was Janet Larson, president of the Manchester Area Chamber of Commerce, who updated the council on plans for the Farmers Market. The council had earlier expressed a desire to keep this located in the downtown area. Larson said that plans to move the Farmers Market to McLennan Gardens have been dropped, and a group of four volunteers has stepped forward to develop an alternate plan.     Manchester Township residents could see increase in rates for re, emergency services

    Mutual aid arrangements for fire and emergency services for Manchester Township could be increasing. Three departments, from Manchester, Clinton and Sand Lake, are contracted to service the township for fire and other emergency services. A group from the Village of Clinton attended the board of trustees meeting Feb. 12, to present the trustees with a new contract for fire and emergency medical services. The Clinton Fire Department provides service to the southern part of Manchester Township, and bills the township for this. Clinton village manager Kevin Cornish said that they had refrained from raising rates for several years, but now had to make a substantial increase to reflect the

    actual costs of providing the service. Its unbelievable how costs have gone up, he said. The proposed new contract will run for two years, with a base fee of $3,200, increased from $1,320. Medical calls will be billed at $375 and fire calls at $750. Clinton Fire Chief

    Dennis Keezer said they had responded to six calls in Manchester Township last year, and ten the previous year. Manchester Fire Chief Bill Scully explained that the Clinton department could respond more quickly to some parts of Manchester Township, which could be

    especially important for medical emergencies. They also can provide additional equipment, if needed, as happened just last week when the Manchester department needed additional tankers. This contributes to high ISO ratings and lower insurance costs in the affected areas.

    Keezer noted that both Clinton and Manchester fire departments earned an ISO 5 rating. This is quite an accomplishment for a fire department, he said. This area is covered well. Sand Lake Fire Chief,
