1.0 Process description There are 3 sub-circuits namely (1) Primary air, (2) Secondary air & (3) Tertiary air. Primary air is the air injected under the layer of coal, also called stoker air. It provides the O 2 needed to burn the fuel in a fixed bed which remains resting on the grid. Before it starts to burn, the fuel must first dry, then reach operating temperature ignition. To burn coal in boiler, the air is heated to 100 C with steam low pressure. In general, the secondary air is introduced at several levels, as and when required for secondary combustion. Sometimes called tertiary air injected air to higher levels. There is no difference in nature between tertiary air and secondary air. In addition to providing the necessary O2 to the combustion, secondary air provides turbulence in the boiler that helps in improving the combustion. A vortex damper consists of a number of segment shaped blades enclosed in a circular casing; each pivoted along its axis of symmetry and linked in such a way that all blades maintain an identical angle to the axis of the device. In this way the unit imparts a variable amount of swirl to the air stream. A balanced draft system, a forced draft fan pushes air into furnace and an induced draft fan produces a draft to pull flue gas through the boiler to exit from the stack. Thus the boiler is maintained at a pressure less than atmospheric pressure. The turbulence also results from the combination of forceddraft fans located in the fuel-supply section and the induced-draft fans located in the stack breeching. The air box acts as a distributor unit which supplies the secondary air at different points and heights at the furnace.

As it can be seen the valves supplying air to the boiler works inversely for the bagasse and coal mode. 4.0 Alarms & Faults For the 2 motor fans, only high temperature alarms are obtained from them; the tripping condition has been removed.
