    Moray ECO-WARRIORS

    (a.k.a The Eco-Committee)

    Moray Primary School


    kick-started their very
    own Eco-Committee in
    October 2007 and the
    team have been going
    from strength to
    strength ever since!

    Here some of us are


    having an eco-meeting at lunchtime!

    Our Action Plan Topics for 2008/09 are as


    follows:

    1. Waste Minimisation
    In the last year we have
    improved our recycling of
    paper to include plastic
    bottles, paper towels and
    cardboard – thanks to the
    Primary 6’s who collect the
    blue bags/bins every Friday and take it to Oran’s
    blue container located in the car-park. We count
    the number of bags collected each week and now
    we are trying to reduce that amount.
    NEXT STEP:
    Our action plan will involve reducing
    the amount we recycle to include
    reuse of paper/card and using both
    sides of paper when writing and
    photocopying.
    We want to make a ‘Plastic
    Greenhouse’ by reusing 2L bottles
    from school and home.
    We also have a compost bin in the school garden where we put our
    garden waste, fruit and vegetables, shredded paper and blue paper
    hand towels – thank-you to Primary 5a for collecting the waste from
    the classes twice a week (and the staffroom after every lunchtime –
    those teachers get through a lot of bananas and apples!)

    NEXT STEPS:
    Our action plan is to use the compost in our ‘Outdoor Classroom’ as
    well as in classes who wish to grow plants. We want to look at the
    Dining Hall waste to see what we can use in our compost bins – so
    we are organising a ‘Day of Action’ in January 2009 called ‘Nae
    Packaging Today Please!’.

    2. Litter
    Moray PS have been litter-picking for a couple
    of years now. We currently have 5 litter-picking
    devices available for any pupil who wishes to
    do their bit to help the school environment.
    But Mr Cuthell (our janitor) still has to go out
    at the end of the breaks to tidy up!

    NEXT STEPS:

    Our action plan, which is now underway, will


    involve reducing the amount of litter being
    thrown down on the playground by educating
    pupils again, explaining the basis of ‘Keeping
    Scotland Tidy’. We hope to
    invite a speaker to our
    assemblies to help with
    this.

    We have organised a rota system of Litter


    Patrollers in the front and rear playgrounds.
    The Eco-Committee also wants to buy more
    bins as well as litter-picking devices. Mr
    Cuthell now has his own traffic lights for the playground. The whole
    school must try to get green every break and lunch within their
    own playground to win extra playtime! The P1-3s are doing a great
    job already!

    3. School Grounds
    Moray have a huge amount of space to the
    rear of the school which the Eco-Committee
    would love to develop. Their ideas resulted
    in an ‘Outdoor
    Classroom’ theme,
    which is underway as
    we write! Primary 3
    designed and painted
    plants and animals on the wall at the front of
    the school with a Community Artist last year.
    We currently have a wildlife garden in the far
    corner of the rear playground; cared for by
    the P5’s Green Gym and Mrs Watson.

    NEXT STEPS:
    Mrs Gallagher & Mrs Furay are currently designing a Mural for the
    school to represent Moray’s place in the community with the aid of
    pupils in P6 and 7. We are continuing to develop the wildlife-garden
    and Outdoor Classroom idea. Mr Connochie is organising falkirk
    council to paint a T-Junction for cycling proficiency on the
    playground and we have been researching into playground games
    which can be painted on the tarmac. We need bird boxes and a log
    pile and more trees/shrubs planted, hopefully within the Outdoor
    Classroom.
