MVHS Career Fair and Rising Ninth Grade Parent Night

Areshia Masters Career Specialist, MVHS This years Career Fair/ Rising 9th Grade Parent Night at Midland Valley High School will be held on February 21 from 6-8pm. The Career Fair is open to all students and parents of Midland Valley as well as the rising 9th grade students and parents from our two middle schools. In the gym, guidance counselors will have tables set up for each of the 16 Federal Career Clusters with people manning each table representing their area of expertise. They may have displays, handouts, and other information concerning various careers that are represented within that cluster. The representatives will be available to speak with students and parents as they come around the various tables of interest to them. Counselors have also invited local colleges like Aiken Tech, USC Aiken, and Augusta Tech to give out information. They also anticipate having various clubs and organizations at Midland Valley represented with displays and information. The event starts at 6:00pm. Parents and students of the middle schools will be encouraged to enter the gym and circulate around some of the tables. At 6:30 they will go into the auditorium for a brief informational meeting. After their meeting they will be encouraged to come back into the gym and gather information from the various representatives at the tables. High school students and parents will be in the gym the entire time. Midland Valley High School faculty and staff hope to welcome many parents and students to this annual career fair.

Family Dollar To Open In Belvedere

By Haley Hughes Work on a new shopping center is under way at the corner of Carmel Street and Edgefield Road. A sign posted at the site says the new center is coming soon, along with a new Family Dollar store. The center will have approximately four fronts, according to Aiken County Planning and Development Director Stephen Strohminger, with Family Dollar as the anchor. The Family Dollar will open in the first half of 2013, said public relations manager Bryn Winburn. It will be approximately 8,000 square feet, and hiring will begin approximately six weeks before the store opens. Those interested in applying can do so by visiting www.familydollar. com. Our stores typically employ between eight and 10 team members, and we look to hire from the communities we serve, Winburn wrote in an email. Family Dollar stores offer its customers a mix of quality name brand products they use everyday; from consumable products such as household paper products and expanded food assortment, to treasures for every home and even quality apparel for men, women and children, according to the companys website. It also has seasonal products, like greeting cards and gift wrap. Family Dollar was founded in 1959 in Charlotte, N.C. There are 7,200 stores nationwide with 50,000 employees.

Keeping You Informed

The Senate is in session for 2013. I hope that you find this update helpful and informative. If I can help you with an issue, please let me know. S.C. Senate Convenes for 2013 Session: The S.C. Senate convened on January 8. This is the first half of a two year session. The Senate is expected to meet for 3 days each week between now and early June except for the week before and after Easter. If an issue is important to you, please let me know. Thank you again to the people of District 24 for the honor to serve our District. Taxpayer Hero Award: Last month, the S.C. Club for Growth listed me as one of only 5 out of 124 House members to receive the Clubs Taxpayer Hero Award based on my two year voting record during the 2011-2012 legislative session. Elections Ballot Upheaval Fix: In late January, the full Senate gave final approval to legislation (S.2) to correct the election issues which we saw across the state last year. The fix includes changes so that incumbents and non-incumbents have the same filing requirements. The bill now goes to the House. Video Gambling Prohibitions: Last month, the full Senate by a vote of 40-2 passed legislation (S.3) closing a loophole that allows a new form of video poker to operate in South Carolina. The sweepstakes video games will be illegal under the proposal. I voted in favor. The bill now goes to the House.

New SCDOT Commissioner: Local Aiken County resident Chad Ingram was elected in midJanuary to serve as the SCDOT Commissioner for the Second Congressional District. Judicial Elections and New Workers Compensation Commissioner: Last year, the General Assembly provided funding for six new family court judges and three new circuit court judges. Judicial elections were held to fill those positions on January 30. Also, on January 31, the Senate confirmed Governor Haleys new appointee Aisha Taylor to the Workers Compensation Commission. Ethics Reform Recommendations Released: On January 28, the South Carolina Commission on Ethics Reform recommended strengthening state ethics, election, campaign finance and public records laws in its final report. Governors State of the State Address: On January 16, Governor Haley delivered her State of the State address. She emphasized improving cyber security; reducing regulations; restructuring including the elimination of the Budget and Control Board; and reforming the states funding formula for K-12 public schools. Cyber Attack Deadline Extended: South Carolina taxpayers affected by the information security data breach at the South Carolina Department of Revenue now have until March 31, 2013, to sign up for a year of free

credit monitoring and unlimited fraud resolution provided by Experian. Anyone who filed a South Carolina tax return since 1998 should take the following steps: Call 1-866-578-5422 to enroll in a consumer protection service. (The call center is open 9:00 AM 9:00 PM EST on Monday through Friday and 11:00 AM 8:00 PM EST on Saturday and Sunday.) For any South Carolina taxpayer who wishes to bypass the telephone option, there currently is an online service available at http://www.protectmyid.com/ scdor. CSRA Defensive Arts Takes 1st Place

Liz Mikell and DJ Britton traveled to the yearly Orangeburg open martial arts tournament and competed in fighting, weapon, and self-defense divisions. The siblings represented the CSRA Defensive Arts class in Clearwater, SC and placed top level in all divisions. Liz received 1st place in selfdefense, 1st place in kata, and 2nd place in sparring. DJ received 1st place in kata, 2nd place in weapons, and 2nd place in sparring. Both came home exhausted with several bumps and bruises, but both gave an amazing showing in a tournament against competitors from other martial arts styles. CSRA Defensive Arts black belt and instructor Ruby Cochran acted as a coach for the two students and also helped run rings at the tournament. Once again, students from the martial arts class held at Heights Church came in tops and brought home all first and second place prizes. life; no one goes to the Father except by me. Romans 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also to the Greek. In John 14 we see that even though Thomas had spent three years with our Lord he was still doubtful but full of questions. Thomas was asking what most of the other disciples were thinking. You see, they believed all the time that Jesus would set up an earthly Kingdom and free them from Roman oppression. And then we call Thomas the Doubter and condemn him when the other disciples were no different in their beliefs than he was. Thomas just asked the questions. We need to learn to recognize seekers in this day and age. They are still asking questions. Many are argumentative trying to stir up controversy so as to keep their true feelings hidden. Some are immature believers, still sucking on the milk of the Word and never attaining the teeth for the meat. They are Closet Christians. The ones that let someone else make the first move. The ones that are slightly ashamed of the Gospel. The Apostle Paul covered that in Romans 1. He recognized the Good News of Jesus Christ for what it really is: The power of God unto salvation to every one

By Pastor Lynn Kirkland Recently, after spending several days at the Hippodrome during the Augusta Futurity, a couple of the guys that attend COWBOY CHURCH regularly were discussing the number of people that either came to our services or stopped by to talk to us to encourage us in the work we were doing. Their final assessment was that there is a large number of Closet Christians that need to come out of the closet and take a stand for Jesus Christ. I believe that we have a great number of people that, for whatever reason, have not made a commitment to Jesus Christ. Even though they occasionally attend church and know all the Christian lingo they are actually seekers. They have something missing and are still seeking it. Lets take a look at John 14: 5 & 6 and Romans 1:16 to see what I am talking about. John 14:5 Thomas said to him, Lord, we do not know where you are going; so how can we know the way to get there? John 14:6 Jesus answered him, I am the way, the truth, and the

that believes. Today many educated people reject and condemn the Gospel. Political Correctness demands a strange sort of tolerance these days. You can pray to a universal god, but not Jesus. (Listen up School Board). We must be tolerant of Allah and universal god but no one must be tolerant of believers in the Good News of Jesus Christ. In Romans 1:16 Paul says that The Good News is the power to save us from our lostness. He says that it is just-as-if we never sinned. This is Good News! This is the power of God! I hope somebody is shouting and saying Amen right now! Acts 1:8 declares that we will be witnesses when the power of the Holy Spirit comes on us! We will not be ashamed of the Gospel. Where do you stand today? Are you a seeker that thinks church membership is going to take you to Heaven? Or, are you a closet Christian that needs to grow up in Christ? Or, do you realize that you are lost, dying,

Cappuccino Fridays At MVHS

Marcia S. Kalayjian Media Specialist The Midland Valley High School Media Center is sponsoring Cappuccino Fridays during the month of February 2013, and parents are welcome to attend. Cappuccino Fridays is a literacy promotion to reward students and allow them an opportunity to have a cappuccino in the library while they browse books and magazines. The aim is to make the Media Center welcoming and comfortable for students, especially those students who may not use the Media Center regularly, and to encourage literacy and reading in a pleasant atmosphere. This year parents of MVHS students are invited to Cappuccino Fridays between 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m. Parents will sign in at the office and be escorted to the media center for a free mocha cappuccino. Cappuccino Fridays were held January 11, 17, 25; and are scheduled for February 1, 8 and 15. The January dates featured incentive tickets: free tickets were given out for teachers to distribute, to reward, and to inspire students. The February dates will feature sold tickets: tickets will be available for $1 in the commons on the Wednesdays and Thursdays before Cappuccino Fridays. Parents are welcome to attend any date of Cappuccino Fridays between the hours of 10:45 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

Leavelle McCampbell Middle Schools Spelling Bees were held January 8 and 9. The winners of the grade level Spelling Bees were: 6th grade: Sylker Kernagan 1st place, Zachary Widener 4th place, Devon DiCarlo 3rd place. 7th grade: Josi Ready 1st place, Kiana Hood 2nd place, Jayshon Johnson 3rd place. 8th grade: Shaina Murphy 1st place, Grant Wilson 2nd place, Lauren Brown 3rd place. The school-wide winners were Josi Ready 1st place, Omar McKie 2nd place and Kiana Hood 3rd place. They will represent Leavelle McCampbell Middle School at the Group I Spelling Bee Monday, January 14, at South Aiken Elementary School.

Midland Valleys NJROTC Rifle Team Qualifies For National Championship

By: MVHS Junior Anna Norris and Senior Katie Frazier Midland Valleys NJROTC Rifle Team has had an extremely successful season. On Saturday, January 12, the rifle team took first place in the NJROTC Area 6 Championship. The Cadets competed against the 62 schools that have NJROTC units in both North and South Carolina. Participating in the Sporter category, Cadets Patrick Meyer, Anna Norris, Krista Smart, and Jacob Gue all pulled together to post the high team score in the championship match. NJROTC Rifle competitions are conducted in an Olympicstyle, three position format. The cadets use precision pellet rifles to score on targets at a distance of 10 meters from the prone, standing, and kneeling positions. Scores are tabulated for each participant individually and collectively as a four person team. The top shooters for the Mustangs, juniors Anna Norris and Krista Smart, both earned individual honors in addition to the team championship. Cadet Norris posted the second highest individual score of the tournament. Cadet Smart was the third highest individual and posted the highest score in the prone position. The team will now be going to the National Competition during February. This is the first year the team has advanced this far in competition.
