Bus, Port, System Software and Celeron Processor

Bus is a subsystem that transfers data or power between computer components. It connects peripherals over shared wires. A port serves as an interface between devices and allows connection via plugs or cables. Serial ports transfer data one bit at a time while parallel ports transfer multiple bits simultaneously. System software controls computer operations and includes the operating system, utilities, and communication programs. It supports other software, manages hardware resources, and controls peripherals. The Celeron processor was introduced in 1998 as a cheaper alternative to Pentium chips with smaller cache sizes ranging from no cache to 128KB.

Question .1 Explain BUS, PORT, SYSTEM SOFTWARE and CELERON PROCESSOR.

Bus:-

In computer architecture, a Bus is a subsystem that transfers the data or power between computer components inside a computer or between computers. A Bus logically connects several peripherals over the same set of wires. Bus means an electrical parallel system with electrical conductors identical to the pins on the C.P.U.(central processing unit) . Buses can be parallel Bus, which carries data words striped across multiple wires, or serial Bus, which carries the data in serial form. Computers can have both internal as well as an external Bus. Internal Bus is a Bus, which connects all the internal components of a computer to the motherboard, i.e., connecting the C.P.U. and internal memory. These are also called Local Buses. An external Bus connects external peripherals to the motherboard.

PORT: -

In computer hardware, a port serves as an

interface between the computer and other computer devices. Port is a specialized outlet on a piece of equipment to which a plug or cable connects. The term port is derived from a Greek word PORTA which means gate / door or entrance. Common ports are round (PS/2), rectangular (fire wire), square (telephone plug). The ports are divided into two groups based on signal transfer. They are-

1. SERIAL PORTS:These are the ports that send and receive one bit at a time . In Other words , An interface on the computer that allows transmission of data characters one bit at a time is Called Serial Port . It is also called a communication or COM port.

PORT

1.

PARALLEL PORTS:These are the ports that send multiple bits at the same time . Some ports are Hot swappable ports or plug and play ports .

SYSTEM SOFTWARE: programs designed to control the operations and the processing capabilities of the computer system . It performs the following functions :1. It supports the development of other application

It is a set of one or more

software. 2. It supports the execution of other application software. 3. It monitors effective use of hardware resources like C.P.U. , memory , etc. 4. It communicates and controls the various peripheral devices like printer , disk , etc. The programs included in the system software package are called system programs and the programmers who prepare system programs are called system programmers.

Example: - Operating system (windows),

Communication software , Utility programs , etc.

Features of system software :1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. It allows the use of system programming Faster in speed Machine dependant Difficult to manipulate Difficult to design Handles complex tasks

CELERON ) :-

PROCESSOR ( 266 MHz 2.8 GHz

It was invented in 1998. It is a less expensive Pentium chips due to smaller L2 cache . First Celerons have no L2 cache but 128 KB cache was introduced in 1999 . Celeron started with 66 to 100 MHz system bus and later they migrated to 400 MHz.
