James Competency 5 Narrative: Engage in Professional Development - EDCI 67000
Demonstrates the disposition for life-long learning and continuous professional development
Professional development is extremely important to me. That is exactly why I am in this Masters Degree program that demands many hours per week from my already busy life. I have not yet had time to attend workshops or Conferences related to Instructional Design, but I am looking forward to doing so after I have completed my practicum. I have registered for the Annual Instructional Systems Technology Conference in Bloomington, Indiana . I am going to use my, Reflections on Developing Expertise for this competency. It provided me an opportunity to reflect about the profession of instructional design and tie together many of the things I have been learning. In this reflection I was able to consider how I had developed different skills mentioned in Ertmer and Stepich (2005), such as, Problem Finding; Principles vs Features; synthesizing vs summarizing; relationships among issues; reflective vs reflexive. I utilized these items as headings in a chart to help me look at, Keys to Improvement and Action Steps:
Action Plan For Moving Forward Problem Finding
Principles vs Features
Keys to Improvement
Gaining experience in the field, but also by continuing to read and analyze case studies. Being able see the different parts of a situation and how they relate to one another Being able to see how issues are related to one another and how they might behave.
Action Steps
Develop knowledge joining online instructional design and e-learning groups via LinkedIn and other avenues Allow time to take in the whole picture. Dont list the parts, but get to know them and how they work together. Try to conceptualize how different issues, people and information are interacting together. This will help responses to not be merely restating the obvious of what anyone could see already. Make certain that responses and solutions reflect thinking about principle ideas. Do they help to conceptualize and make clear what the intentions of the solutions are? They are not just a reflex reaction to issues, or rehashing of
Synthesizing vs summarizing
Relationships Among Issues
Reflective vs Reflexive
Taking time to think things through as opposed just reacting to information regardless of your knowledge
information already known.

Relationships among Solutions
Keys to Improvement
How do solutions and their parts relate to one another? Consider the chronological order or priorities connected to different parts of a solution
Action Steps
Think of solutions as part of a plan of action. How will they relate to and address the issues of the situation. Think through what is the cause and effect of the solutions different parts and how will they work. If you consider cause and effect as you create your solutions you will also be considering the implications of what your solution is accomplishing.
Create solutions that do not necessarily act as top down reactions, but can adapt and change to fit the situation. Solutions that simply react to what one sees at first glance will very likely be inaccurate and cause more trouble than they resolve.
Consideration of Implications
How are solutions and other parts helping or hurting anything? What kind of impact will solutions have on others?
Are solutions and problem solving ideas flexible instead of rigid?
Flexible vs Rigid
This is a useful action plan for me to refer to as I look at projects and to consider how I am handling different situations. Just the process of analyzing case studies led me to see how differently I was looking at things and the major difference in my understanding of instructional design over the past year and one half. My commitment to professional development is strong, as well as my commitment to utilizing what I have learned in this program and applying it to my work. I am very excited about my practicum project as I begin to bring the learning I have done to bear on this project. While it will be difficult to utilize everything, I do find myself thinking about things I have done the different courses of this program, from storyboarding to developing evaluation processes for a project.
