Introduction
Let another praise you, not your own lips. Proverbs. The intent of all the kind things that people have said about me in the previous pages is not for me. It is for you. You will take some of your precious time to read this ebook, and it is important to know it is going to be worth it for you. Im going to share with you in these pages the mastery required to be successful in the network marketing industry. Also you will discover the most effective marketing tool that no networker should be without. We are extremely complex beings as humans. Yes - good skills are required for success - BUT - I have seen those with good skills fail, and others with lesser skills do great work. Ive attempted in this work to boil down the elements of prosperity to the bare essentials. Each chapter contains an element, that without appropriate growth or implementation, the formula for success will fail. The first arena is personal mastery. Ive further delineated it in two categories, disciplines and skills. Section I: Personal Mastery Section II: Marketing Mastery Section III: Team Building Mastery Until a human being learns to nurture and lead him or herself in an effective manner, the quest for success is usually in vain. If you dont or cant lead yourself, you will not be able to lead others effectively. If you dont possess the skills of your trade, you will not find personal success, thus the ability to lead others into prosperity either.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
The second all encompassing arena that requires mastery for an impacting life is the quality of our interfacing with others, and at its highest level called - master-minding. The relationships in our life will heavily impact our future. We will look at some key elements in linking up with others for business building. You will discover some very pragmatic and proven strategies and methods to effectively attract and empower leaders in your organizations. The methodologies revealed in this ebook are the very ones I implemented to attract and empower Ann Sieg during a season on her rise to greatness in our industry.
Authentic transformation takes interaction with a coach and/or master mind group and/or team community to be truly enlightened and energized to the paradigms that bring fruitfulness.
Enjoy,
Coach Curt PS: Please know that I am not coming from some safe and lofty position like many university professors - only teaching theory that they havent experienced. Having been in the game for the last 12 years, I have reached the top of the pay plan in two different network marketing companies, and seen both crumble for different reasons. Ill share those stories in this ebook, and reveal the lessons learned that make for the solid foundations and model that we are building on now. Along with continuing to work closely with Ann Sieg as the Renegade System Director of Coaching, Im building an organization into the thousands that offers a tool every serious marketer should have, including network marketers. Ann Sieg calls it her secret weapon and over the past 5 years has been the most solid, productive, and income producing platform Ive employed.
MLM Mastery
My heart condemned me, even if no one else did. As I shared and participated in the event that day 25 years later, I was free. Even though my credentials and accomplishments would show that I was a trustworthy leader, now my heart and mind also were convinced of it. It was a huge breakthrough moment in my life. Many people had trusted me through the previous 25 years, but that moment allowed me to step up to a fresh level of leadership and accomplishment. It wouldnt have happened if I wasnt being very intentional in my quest for personal mastery. I havent arrived, but I am enjoying the journey like never before, and accept with proper gladness the trust team mates place in me. Without the basic foundations of personal mastery, all the skills and success in the world will not add up to a fulfilling life. We only need to look at pop cultures top icons tragic lives to see the evidence of this.
The most common form of deception is self deception. We have the propensity to tell ourselves lies. We tend to judge others by their actions, but our own lives by our intentions. We intend to do many good things that we know we should act on, and just the intention helps salve our guilty or anxious feelings. In the childrens story of the three little pigs, each pig faced the reality of the big bad wolf - and went to work. In 2012 it doesnt take much discernment to see that there are big bad wolves wanting to devour anyone with an entrepreneurial spirit. If you are reading this book, I can assume you are wanting to work hard for a safe and fulfilling future. The recognition of the threats to your prosperity are real, and you are taking action to do something about it. Congratulations. The frightening news though is that the big bad wolf, just like in the nursery tale, is going to destroy the majority of what is being built by busy and well intentioned people. Each little pig was motivated and worked hard to construct their shelter. Motivation and work ethic were not the main reasons their work did not perform. It was lack of knowledge. They looked busy, but didnt understand business productivity or effectiveness - the business of building something that would stand up against a wolf.
You might be a Christopher. You have had success in some old models of network marketing or direct selling. I dont need to tell you that day of success in marketing by chasing family and friends is long over, and maybe - in part - that is why you are reading this. No matter how much activity, busyness, or hype you can muster up for yourself, or stir up in your organization with a new deal, it just doesnt fly anymore.
#4. Most of Society is Vaccinated against an opportunity pitch. What is a vaccination? It is giving just a little bit of a virus in a weakened form so that your body will build up resistance against that form of sickness. Maybe 10 or 20 years ago you could talk to people that hadnt tried a business opportunity, not anymore. Everyone has been vaccinated. Even if you truly have the best thing since sliced bread, they dont want to hear about it.
This may be coming across harsh, and I do apologize for that, but the awakening from self-deception is not always pretty. Ive listened to scenario after sad scenario from my coachs seat and come to the observations that most people are busy, but not with business.
We can come to the conclusion in this scary process that we honestly dont know if what we are doing is truly productive. Congratulations. The willingness to admit that in itself can be a HUGE breakthrough in your journey. Being aware. The internet is changing so fast (thus having huge ripple effects in business and marketing) that what worked even a few months ago may now be waning. The TRUTH is that any professional marketer must be asking themselves this question on an ongoing basis - Am I doing business or busyness?!?! It really isnt that hard to determine what is meaningful and productive activity. You simply look at the results or outcome. Two little pigs learned all their busyness wasnt really good business. We are going to look at several other aspects of finding true freedom through results, but if all your energy is being applied to activity that is nothing more than busyness, your motives, goals, and associations really wont matter - it will all be blown down by the big bad wolf.
*Upline: A term used in the network marketing industry to refer to someone who sponsored you into a business, or someone up that chain of sponsorship.

There is no doubt that those who achieve great things in this life have a burning desire for success. Maybe more than any other quality, Napoleon Hill documents this common characteristic in highly successful people. Hill relates a story of a young man that overcame all odds and obstacles to become a partner with Thomas Edison. He includes several other inspiring stories of those with intense passion to see a particular event or goal be fulfilled. My favorite book, The Bible, is filled with stories of those with passion fulfilling their callings. My favorite Bible character (besides Jesus) is King David. We see this principle of burning desire his whole life - starting early with the famous story of David and Goliath. Many reject Hills work because they think that somehow the desire for money or riches is completely carnal or unredeemable. Lets take a look at the story of David and Goliath again. One of the reasons that David found the desire to slay Goliath was because of the financial gain! The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. I Samuel 17:25. David even had the soldiers repeat the offer to make sure he got it right. Now - I dont think that was Davids highest motive, but it certainly was a part of the mix, and increased his motivation.
The very fact you are reading this ebook would indicate there is something burning in your heart. But is your flame big enough?
it a burning desire. You will experience many things that will try to blow your flame of desire for success or riches out. I havent kept records, but my experience in coaching hundreds of people seems to line up with most of the studies and surveys done on new business start ups - most will not achieve their goals in business - any business. It is not only in network or affiliate marketing, it is true in any industry with new business start ups. If you dont HAVE to make a business work, you probably wont unless another reason that motivates you is very compelling. What do I mean? Most of us start out with a desire for our business to turn a profit because we need to make money - provide a better future for our family. As noble as this is, if that is our only motivation, my experience in working with hundreds of entrepreneur wanna-bes, is that it wont be enough to fuel the fire. Usually there needs to be more. Even with a burning desire to succeed because you have to, that usually isnt a strong enough motivating factor to press all the way through to the personal financial freedom. It almost always take an additional motivation to create the intensity of the heated motivation strong enough to break through. The list of motivations is long and varied for all of us, but almost always includes a sense of our destiny and purpose - the lofty dreams that unfortunately only a few strive for to help change our part of the world.
Solutions to BIG problems like Poverty Pollution Persecution. Cures for illness or diseases.
You know - the ultimately important stuff. Study the wealthy business man or woman who got there on their own efforts. Their burning desire is usually obvious, and almost always there is a vision in how their wealth or success can make this life a better experience, or this planet a better place for someone, somewhere.
Just as red hot coals in the old steam engines would be useless without the other apparatus, so to the complete dynamics of success must be added to the required burning desire .
Ignorance on Fire
In retrospect in looking over my years in network marketing I would have to admit to my shame that I was in dysfunction and sometimes abusive relationships. A characteristic or value that was honored in the organizations that I belonged to was ignorance. Hmmm. Doesnt sound like something that should be valued. Ignorance on fire. We were encouraged to talk to people about our business even if we didnt have the knowledge or skills to do so. Passion for success, or a burning desire, has to be present for success, BUT that passion must be yoked with knowledge and wisdom. If my burning desire had been channeled earlier in my marketing career towards learning the skills and strategies of a true professional, my success would have come sooner - and been more solid. Burning Desire? Absolutely. Ignorance? Never. The internet has changed how life and business function. There no longer is any excuse for ignorance for us in developed nations. Truth, wisdom, and knowledge are only a click away.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
We must learn to channel burning desire , ours AND others, into a quest of continual learning and educated implementation of the latest strategies in our fields.
Plan B?
Those who have an easy Plan B to escape or retreat to will usually take that path of least resistance. There will come a time on your journey towards personal independence that Plan B will look very tempting, and many close to you will insist that you must take it. As already stated, there may be times that detours are needed on your journey, but is your burning desire strong enough NEVER to give up on pursuing your destiny? Please keep reading. You will discover this book is NOT the typical self mastery proclamations. Learning skills and building wisely with proven up-to-date strategies and methods are essential. I resent those who condemn others for their lack of motivation as THE REASON a person fails probably as much as you do. What I am saying though, is even with the proper professional skills, self mastery, and associations - there are still many challenges to face in creating personal independence. If your desire isnt BURNING, even doing everything else as a learning and intelligent professional, the odds are you wont make.

Chapter 3: Accountability
People may not do what's expected, but they will do what is inspected." - Author unknown When I got out of the United States Air Force, I went to work in my Uncles company. After a season I was managing most of the 10 or so employees. One of the things my uncle told me at that time stuck with me. It is the quote above. (I guess Ill give my uncle credit since the author is unknown!) In mentoring and leading others, it is good to have the viewpoint of seeing everyone as diamonds in the rough - with incredible value and potential. The other side of that same coin though is another reality of what typical human nature is like. Human beings are prone to stubbornness - and do not always embrace what is best for themselves. Accountability is essential for the obtaining of visions and goals. We must apply its principles and practices not just to others, but first and foremost to ourselves! We must earnestly resist the thoughts and temptations that somehow we are different or better than others, thus deceiving ourselves that we do not need accountability. A mantra of the teams that I build in my network marketing companies: This is netWORKing. It is not netWANTing. It is not netWISHing.
It is not netWHINing. It is not netWAITing. NetWORKing. Although I do not think WORK has to be a negative word, because I, like many, enjoy my work. The word WORK can feel like the word medicine to many. Work rightly implies effort, submission, and many other things - including accountability!
There are sales goals or quotas to be met. Many of the people you will interface with by being your own boss, also will carry some resemblance of a boss. You will be reporting to and be accountable to others. If you are not, you will fail! By entering the realm of business ownership versus the job - you may be trading one boss for several bosses! Your customers. Your team mates. Your joint venture partners. All these people you will need to be accountable to! So if you tend to reject accountability and think running your own business is the answer to avoid it - think again.
Here is one example that may help you apply accountability to your business. Every business needs to do follow up work in its marketing. Following up leads. Following up on orders. Following up on customers. As you look over the past few months of your business you see that you have been slack in this area. You could and should easily increase the activity by at least 50%.
(For Coach Curts recommendation for the most powerful business tool he uses in multiple ways including follow up click here. )
Now take the main form of follow up you have been using (there usually is more than one; emails, postcards, phone calls, etc.) Lets use phone calls for this example. As you go through your records you see that you have only phoned of your new customers. Set a new goal of calling all of them this month! This commitment can be easily shared with your accountability partner in business also (coach, team mate, associate, etc.) At the end of the month they simply ask you: Did you make a follow up phone call to all of your new customers? Although the answer is a simple Yes or No. Be sure to listen to yourself as you answer, and how you feel as you answer. Hopefully the answer is Yes - you completed your goal. But if you came up short are you cognizant of what is going on with yourself? Do you feel guilty? Are you embarrassed? Do you find yourself making excuses? Often we are not aware of the powerful dynamics of our inner thought processes and feelings as we move forward and are challenged.
You are your own boss. You must inspect your most important employees work - that is YOUR WORK, AND be accountable to the boss and partners with it! Remember my uncles quote: People may not do what's expected, but they will do what is inspected." If you are not measuring your progress, how will you know if you are improving? If you are not sharing this valuable data with a coach or partner, you are at great risk of avoiding the accountability needed for success.
One of the main reasons people dont set goals, even though it is proven how important and effective this is for entrepreneurs, is that it is a high level of accountability. When we dont reach our stated and tangible goals - we just dont feel good about it - or ourselves. AND - we dont like not feeling good - SO - - - we avoid setting goals! Pretty simple psychology. But a very common phenomena. The wisdom in setting benchmarks is that although it lowers the bar, it creates a more realistic target, and can already take into consideration factors that may come into play to make your original goal unrealistic (unexpected health issues, family matters, technology challenges, etc.) By having a benchmark in place along side the goal, you have already factored these potential variables in, and you will meet this lesser goal - NO MATTER WHAT. When you meet your benchmark, you still feel OK because you are still improving and moving your business forward, even if it isnt as quickly you had planned or desired.
Lead by Example
We will discuss aspects of leadership later on in this ebook, but it may be helpful to cover this point here. Good leaders have done and are willing to do whatever they ask their subordinates to do. This principle of leadership is easily applied if you work with associates, upline, or with team mates. One of the most effective, and certainly FUN ways you can implement accountability in your organizations is by competition. With the leadership teams we created, we would all participate in reporting the agreed upon stats with each other. I did this right along with all my leaders. I was in the game with them. As we journeyed together and they
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
saw that I had challenges just as they did. It built great esprit dcor. What it did for me was a way to implement the accountability I knew that I needed! It was also fun to see others meet their goals. One of the most exciting seasons of this activity is when Ann Sieg caught up and then flew by me in the competition as she grew her business! Some of my up and coming leaders are in an accountability group right now, and I just have to tell you about a business woman in our group, Joan. As we were progressing with our project and being accountable to each other, she was struggling, but still keeping up and maintaining a GREAT attitude. One week she fell just a bit behind, but let me know what was going on. What already knew is that Joan is 80 years old. You would never know it. Her attitude and development is far better than most. But what I didnt know that had put an extra measure of challenge in the mix is that she was going into surgery the next day to have her shoulder replaced! She assured me that she would be on our accountability call in 3 days, although she probably wouldnt be able to type yet. If you shun accountability, or think you have good excuses to avoid this crucial dynamic, maybe Ill introduce to Joan!
Coaches Corner
How do you feel about being accountable to someone? In what areas can you be stubborn? Are you a good boss to yourself? Do you avoid setting goals? Why? What benchmarks and goals could you establish?
ethics will be in play and tested. Your core values in the areas of family, money, success, relationships, and many more will be revealed. What I have discovered in those who enjoy business marketing success is that they have strong core values in belief in themselves, their God, and others. To put it a different way, those whom discover a fruitful business journey also BELIEVE: They believe in a purpose beyond materialism; They believe that they can overcome any challenge with Gods help;
They believe in team work with others of kindred spirit to fulfill the mission.
Values Clashing
Another extremely intense season that I went through shows how the core values of OTHERS in whom you associate with can also greatly impact your future. Ann Sieg and I were working together in another company and really starting to discover some of the dynamics, like attraction marketing, that now fuel the Renegade Phenomena. We were working with a company and its top leadership that claimed that they also wanted to see our industry transformed from the old ways of mlm. Unfortunately, Ann & I learned that their proclamations and vision statements did not line up with their CORE values. As Ann become very successful, our team was bringing this company more business than they could handle. The leadership of that company refused to hire the people or invest more in the business infrastructure to handle the growth.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
What was really at play was CORE values. You see, the leadership really didnt value people. They didnt see the people coming into our business as those with great potential and could find good success. The owners of the company enjoyed the financial fruits of a profitable family business and wanted to keep it small, thus thwarting giving others their own shot at success. His stated values were clashing - small family business vs. platform for others success. (There is nothing wrong with wanting to keep a profitable small family business running without the challenges of growth, except in this case the stated vision of the company clashed with this goal.) To this day the leadership may not even realize this issue of core values was one of the main components of the debacle. He first expelled Ann from the company on slanderous and bogus charges. He then, in essence, blackmailed me by giving me the option of being thrown out or cutting my association with Ann. It was not a choice really. My core values are solid. I choose friendships above monetary gain. I also knew I now could no longer support or promote this company because I knew their core values were not what I wanted to associate with. Although we hit an iceberg that sank that ship, we survived for another glorious day. We learned a hard lesson. Having lost our strong and growing residual incomes, to this day, Ann & I are VERY careful to get to know someones core values before we make commitments. Core values help you stand on solid ground during the storms. Knowing the core values of others gives you a great advantage in growing your business in the relationships and joint venturing needed to make that happen. After you identify your own core values, you will find business much more energizing journeying with those of similar values. (If you havent taken the time to identify your core values, it is worth the exercise.)
One very common core value I have found among my entrepreneurial clients is that of personal independence. If you are developing your social marketing skills, find niches where your values are embraced, in blogs and forums. Discover quotes that express your values and use them in venues like Facebook, Twitter, or YouTube. Find examples of your values being expressed and tell them in story form in your marketing material. Those who become cognizant of their values, and intentionally discover the values of those whom they attract to their business and journey with, achieve ongoing and enjoyable success with kindred spirited mates. Many, including this author, have found themselves shipwrecked at times not paying attention to this crucial success element.

What are your Core Values? What commitments in your life to yourself and others are non-negotiable? How can you discern the core values of others? How can I express my core values in my marketing?
Chapter 5: Humility
I was telling you the story in the last chapter of my early family life and my workaholic tendencies. Besides having a courageous wife who would speak truth to me, there was by some miracle enough humility in me to listen to what she had to say. Pride is a dangerous quality, and a tricky ingredient in the success formula. Humility listens. When my wife confronted me, truth be told, I didnt see the situation the way she did. It was necessary for me to set aside my viewpoint and try to see it from here perspective. She also drew conclusions from her accumulation of data that I disagreed with, but I had to accept her analysis, at least in part, to work on the situation. Pride can blind even the most intelligent and sincere people. I knew about family life - I was even counseling other families. My heart was sincere in loving my family, but I wasnt showing it! There are characteristics and qualities that are important for an individual to develop on the pathway to success, but some of them can be counterfeited or masked by pride. We need to have good self-esteem; but that is different than pride. We need to have confidence in our abilities and talents; but that is different than pride. We need to trust our discernment and decisions; but that is different than pride.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
It is kind of a catch 22; you have to have some humility to consider if you have an issue with pride!
Maybe I am too old fashioned. (Why are the millions drinking this up in the baby boomer generation?) How does the advertiser know what I, or anyone else for that matter, deserves? Maybe I dont deserve a nice car. Maybe I am lazy. Maybe I have never worked a job hard. Maybe I never went the extra mile for my boss or worked more than 40 hours in a week. Maybe I grumbled and complained when we all had to work more hours because the company got a nice big contract, but we didnt have enough people to handle the new business. Maybe I have been overspending and abusing credit cards for years and let the cost of interest used up any extra income I could have.
Maybe I DONT deserve that new car!!! You see pride is tricky. It is prideful to think more highly of yourself than you ought to think. When things dont go well, rather than assume responsibility like every successful person does, a prideful person blames others for their circumstances, and along comes prides ugly cousins of self pity and a victim mentality. Humility is one of the absolute essential elements I have included in this bare boned, scaled down, and boiled to the absolute essential list of things that are required for entrepreneurial success. Without humility, it is nearly impossible to acquire the personal mastery and master minding skills essential for success - the themes of this book.
Teachable
Much has been written about pride and humility. It is a common theme or sub theme in most of our entertainment. For our purposes here in empowering those on the entrepreneurial journey towards personal independence, I want to mention two abilities that humility is a prerequisite for, the first one is being teachable. A prideful person is not teachable. Although only the most prideful will tell you that they dont want or need to learn anything from anyone else, many display their pride in their lack of hunger to learn, and/or their stubborn refusal to change their ways -
Ways of thinking Ways of doing business Ways of marketing Ways of communicating Before the phenomena of the internet, this flaw of pride was a bit easier to hide, and not as crippling to success. A salesman or entrepreneur could learn some of the tricks of their trade and it could last them many years, maybe a even a full career. The marketing strategies that worked in the 1950s still worked well into the 1980s - even the 90s. In some markets, innovation in sales and marketing wasnt really required for success. The railroad industry learned a lesson the hard way. Most of the railroad companies disappeared as times changed. They thought they were in the railroad business! They were not aware enough that in reality they were in the transportation business! The perfect storm of the global recession along with the rapidly growing age of internet marketing has created a situation that to stay competitive, being teachable is a must. What you learned even 6 months ago may not be valid now in your market or niche. (Good solid principles and values never change - we are referring to methods, venues, etc.)
Team Player
The day of the Lone Ranger is long gone also. For my younger generation readers, the Lone Ranger was actually one of the first media created super heroes. The show (at first radio, then television) featured a masked cowboy, and his Indian friend Tonto. He was famous for his independence.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
Independence can be another reflection of pride. Many successful people have the quality of being able to stand alone when need be, but that is not the same as isolation due to the character weakness/flaw of pride. In order to thrive in the complexity of todays market place, it is essential for the entrepreneur to be able to work with and within teams. These teams will vary depending upon your type and stage of business; company organizations, employees, joint venture partners, outsourcing, suppliers, etc. The important mindset that humility cultivates allows team work. When you are part of a team that functions well, you have a voice and an influence, but so does everyone else on the team. The top down, or my way is always right approach will not work in marketing any business today. We must not only continue to learn, but we will be far better off learning from our team mates along the way. We will cover this more later in our discussions on master minds, but . . . unless humility is one of the essential characteristics present in your life, you will find master minding, or entrepreneurship in this era difficult.

Do you have someone who will speak truth to you? Do you seek them out on a regular basis? Do you think you have blind spots? How can you discover your blind spots? What do you deserve?
Business or Busyness? Burning Desire. Accountability. Core Values. Humility. Personal Mastery, from my point of view, it has to be from within a person. You cant confess it, proclaim it, chant it or listen to a million recordings to make it happen. Personal Mastery can grow if you are humble, accountable, and have a burning desire to see your dream maximized. The first step in all of this is becoming aware of your current state and the awareness of what actions, knowledge, and associations will cause growth and mastery.
Attraction Marketing.
YOU. S. P. Target Market
Bob was smart enough to know that his associations would make a major impact on his success in our company. (We will unpack the piece of associations more in a later chapter.) What was dawning on me as we had further conversations is that Bob was attracted to me as a successful team leader. Although it was early in the
days of internet marketing, he had found some stuff I had put up on the internet regarding the company I was with. I was stumbling into attraction marketing! Even though I wasnt intentional in my marketing material, I knew that people choose people to work with first and foremost, so I included biography stuff about myself which was rare in internet marketing back then. Bob was actually doing something that was incredibly savvy - even though it was (and still is in some circles) frowned upon in the network marketing industry. He was sponsor shopping! By attracting Bob to me, and then using the raw elements of the consultative selling process, I brought Bob into my organization. He was one of the key leaders and trainers on our team that led me to the highest levels in that company.
Most of us will have to learn and apply the strategy of Attraction marketing, learning the tools and venues. There are two major components to attraction marketing. Attraction by its very definition implies that these TWO objects are being drawn towards each other. In the old school model of sales there was interruption - chase the potential prospect down methodologies. Along with the phenomena of everyone surfing the wave of the world wide web, comes the marketing dynamic of the absolute necessity of attraction people TO you. They come. They want to find and choose. They days of chasing and convincing are over. You must become cognizant of this societal paradigm shift if you are going to be a successful entrepreneur or marketer. One object (the potential customer/client) must first find you, and like what they see. They two events (finding you, liking you) are imperative. Finding YOU: You must learn how to be found. The primary tool people are using to find anything today is the internet. Even local business. People use the internet to look up movies or anything else in their home town - not the newspaper. Liking YOU. YOU means YOU. It doesnt mean your product, company, service, or anything else. Those are important, but not the main thing. The main thing is YOU. It is no longer enough to just have a great U.S.P. (Unique selling proposition.) You must have a great YOU.S.P. The next factor in attraction marketing is your target market. If you try to
reach everyone, you will reach NO ONE. Specialization is key. When is the last time you shopped for a car? When you went looking for a vehicle, did you have in mind what you wanted - or did you show up at a car lot and tell the salesman that anything with wheels to get you from point A to point B would be fine? Even used car salesmen know they have to specialize. Look at the car lots if you live in a city of any size. They specialize. SUVs. Sporty Cars. Family cars. PICK UP Trucks. Etc. They have a target market. You must narrow down your potential prospect like you narrow down the kind of car you want. Attraction marketing is here to stay, and it isnt just for your online marketing either. Some of the tried and true ways of direct marketing using post cards or greeting cards are making a strong come back. Although people love the internet, they still crave the corporeal.

What skills do you have, or need to acquire, to function as a professional in your industry? What qualities in a person creates a desire in you to partner with them? Why would someone want to do business with you? What is your U.S.P.?
That decision can be No, or not even involve money, but a decision.
That is now my hard close. Do you think you could do that? It only works if you have used the natural process of consultative selling from the first time you talked to John. (Oh, and by the way, John wants to talk to you because you used attraction marketing!) Traditional stereotypical sales is not only nerve racking for the salesperson,
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
but goes against the very way we as humans are designed to make decisions. It not only goes against the natural thought processes. People enjoying choosing, they dont enjoy being sold. This can give you hope. If you are in business, you are in marketing and sales. If you are in sales, you will need to learn how to sell - and close. . . The thought of sales and closing bothers some representative so much they hide in denial behind the phrase that this is not selling, only sharing, The awareness that you can come to is: YOUR selling doesnt have to be the stereotypical icon you loathe. There is a natural, simple, and far more effective way of selling called the consultative approach. Like the other 11 foundational elements for a successful journey, this skill must be learned and developed. Once learned though, you (like so many others) may actually enjoy leading potential partners or customers down the decision making road.
M. A. P. S.
If you have been around Renegade or consultative selling, you may know what this acrostic is:
few years back, we were talking about the elements that help qualify someone in the marketing and sales process. It was then that this acrostic popped into my mind. People need a MAP. When you attract interested people to your solution, and then guide them through the natural decision making process, closing truly becomes easy. By addressing these four qualifiers, it helps the prospect determine if they have the sustenance in each of these categories to fuel a business.
A: Action - it takes effort and hours to start and run a business. A person
must have at least a few hours a week to dedicate to their business.
P: Prospects - to grow any business, you need people to talk to about it.
Most entrepreneurs, especially home business start ups, need to increase their traffic.
S: Skills - the more and better skills you have, the more money you can
make. Regardless of internet hype, it is true in every industry, including yours. In using the consultative selling approach, you are able to point out these factors to prospects, help them define or awaken to their needs, and guide then into the resources to meet these challenges. You are actually helping them - and they appreciate it. You are taking them where THEY want to go. Not where you think they should go, or what would be best for you. What a concept. Understanding this paradigm and skill can improve every area your life.

Is there anything about business or marketing that scares you? What area of the marketing and selling process do you need to work on for better results? What do you most enjoy about helping people? Do you have a marketing budget?
The deterioration of my income primarily and squarely is traced back to this event. Many people look at network marketing with suspect. This event had nothing to do with network marketing. Im appealing to my true blooded, kindred spirited, entrepreneurs. Ive talked to thousands of you over the years. Regardless of how solid you think your primary company is, you are vulnerable if you not developing multiple streams of income. Almost every industry is teetering in these hours. Even many areas of the health and wellness industry will tumble in the coming days due to legislation and competition. This competition will not only be from other similar competitors, but competition for the consumers shrinking disposable income. Developing multiple streams of income must be a foundational paradigm for you to thrive in the days ahead. #2. The loss of my subsequent full time residual income in many ways has the opposite elements. It was a small privately owned company. It had to do with core values and relationships. The primary reason for my loss of income actually didnt have as much to do with me as it did other players in the company. The point that is to be underscored here is that like the first time, this situation was such that most of the scenario I had little control over. Other peoples decisions would dramatically affect my future. No matter what company or industry you represent, if you are relying on a single contract or income source, you are vulnerable. Every company is fragile in these days. AND - for the first time that I can remember in my lifetime - EVERY industry is vulnerable also.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
Most progressive companies are obtaining the services of the best representatives by understanding the economic climate and paradigms of these days and allowing flexibility in the representative sales forces. If you are representing a company that instills fear and promotes restrictive and controlling parameters on its representatives (another valid name for an independent sales force), you will want to explore other options. The very fact they are dictating such policies is evidence enough to suspect the company is in trouble. It is human nature to pull back and become defensive when we feel threatened. The same is true for organizations of any size. As my good friend Ann Sieg stated in one of our conversations: Never, ever, ever put all your eggs in one basket. She and I learned that the hard way. I think she would agree that the 8th Great Lie of Network Marketing is that a person should only have one stream of income. The Filipino grocery store here in the big city is similar to the American model. I just got back from one. After going through the different departments (with the only big difference is the meat counter where the fish look back at you) you then follow the flow past the pharmacy, through the household goods, and even through the magazine racks on the way to the check out. A grocery store. A pharmacy. A dry goods store. A magazine store. All in one. Multiple streams of income. It probably isnt a conspiracy, but after seeing one of my full time incomes being swept away because I didnt understand the foundational element of having multiple streams of income, I begin to wise up. You see I had been told by people that were proven to be untrustworthy: You cant chase two rabbits.
Or You cant chase two bouncing balls. You know what I discovered? I wasnt chasing rabbits - or balls! I was planting crops!!! The more and better seeds I have with diversified crops ensure that I will always have a good harvest, even if one whole crop fails.
In Good Company?
It may appear at first that it serves companies well that enlist independent contractors or representatives to keep them solely focused on just their company. This is an illusion. The company is actually treating their representatives like employees, but without having to assume the responsibility of having employees, like good professional training, benefits, etc. Companies need to wise up to the fact that their best independent representatives are those who crave true freedom, and these types will perform better with freedom, or gravitate to those companies who do. Without multiple income streams, the independent representative is much more vulnerable to the whims of the company. And if the company fails at some point, as what happened to me, than 100% of your income is obliterated. Companies who engage independent contractors need to protect themselves legally, but often the language and intent of the policies are designed to instill irrational fear into the hearts of new entrepreneurs. You can master these other 11 foundational elements for your future, but if you miss this one, your whole lifes work can come crashing down in a day. And being an independent contractor there are no safety nets like there are for being an employee.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
Dont walk around for 3 days feeling worse than if someone had run you over by a car (like I did.) You dont have to take my word for it either. Robert Allen wrote the popular Multiple Streams of Income, and a sequel, Multiple Internet Streams of Income. Well worth the read. Take his word for it. But whatever you do, develop this foundational piece of multiple streams of income. Societal social and buying habits continue to evolve quickly as the internet becomes more pervasive. Those companies that utilize independent representatives through network, affiliate, or direct sales are evolving also. The WORST strategy for most things in life are to dig in and protect yourself. We see this happening. We also see though the most progressive and successful companies are engaging the power of the internet with information marketing and consultative sales through independent representatives. They are also realizing that their most productive representatives are truly INDEPENDENT and aggressive, not satisfied with allegiance to just one company, thus are structuring their sales divisions accordingly. They want the best people, whom are internet savvy, attraction and information marketing oriented, consultative selling, FREEDOM seeking entrepreneurs. The economic shaking and shifting of the last couple of years is only going to intensify. Those with foresight will diversify their income and investment strategies. This is the harsh reality of the turbulent seas of economic upheaval we will continue to sail.

Chapter 9. Associations
Early in my life I experienced the reality of - it isnt always what you know, but who you know. Right or wrong, this dynamic is a fact of life. In America, often the first serious thoughts about a career or future come upon a young man or women in the last year or two of high school. This was the case with me also. As I considered my options, a military career was one of them. My grades were good, being in the top 15% of my class, and I had been involved in sports and extracurricular activities, so I applied to my United States Congressman from my district to seek an appointment to the United States Air Force Academy. There was quite a well rounded gauntlet of tests required, but I am convinced, one of the reasons that I beat out many others was because of the letters of recommendations I was able to provide. Men who knew the Congressman and had high positions of influence in our congressional district wrote letters for me.
Choose Wisely
I must admit that I am an Indiana Jones fan. The line in the movie where he is about to take and drink from the cup of eternal life is funny, yet profound. The very old gatekeeper simply said: Choose Wisely. Indiana Jones choose the right cup, but it wasnt a lucky guess from the dozens of choices he had. It was a reasonable and educated calculation. (I wont spoil the movie for you in case you havent seen it.) Choosing our associations doesnt have to be guesses either. We can take
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
steps to ensure we are making good choices. There are no 100% guarantees when it comes to relationship choices, but we can take a more active and intentional path on our selection of journey mates. We will specifically address the selection of team leaders in the last chapter of this book. The chapter is filled with very specific steps to take when attracting and empowering leaders for your organization. It is important also to be discerning in selecting those other associations that are needful to be productive in business:
The following precautions can be applied as you are choosing your associations: #1. First Impressions. Dont ignore them - they are powerful. Often we will get a first impression of someone. Pay closer attention to this. You are far more perceptive than you may give yourself credit for! Although first impressions usually are mostly subjective, that doesnt negate their validity. We were in a room with a company owner and about 15 leaders from the around the country. We had superficial greetings, but now were starting to introduce ourselves to each other. I had a special interest in checking out
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
this guy Fred. Although my organization was the most productive in the company, Freds organization was also going well - and he had the company owners favor. As we went around and told just a bit about ourselves, my first impression of Fred was that he was not an honest man. He said some things I simply did not believe - based totally on my discernment. I remember very clearly thinking to myself that I was glad he wasnt in my organization and that I should never trust him. My first impression was unfortunately later proved to be accurate. Later he would be in the mix of a conspiracy theory built around lies and suspicion that the owner would believe. His deceptive ways and unfounded slander in part cost me thousands of dollars. As a side note, my experience in life has been that generally speaking women have better discernment then men. Guys - especially if you married - involve your wife in your crucial association making decisions. #2. Testimonials. Of course, whether your first impression is favorable or not, it always can be wrong! Be willing to do your due diligence and check out those who know about the association you are considering. It is always so much easier to avoid a potentially difficult association or situation, than it is to get out of one.
#3. Trial Runs. When possible, set up a temporary situation where you can experience at some level the quality of relationship this association may hold. It is done all the time - marriage engagements, product guarantees, jobs through employment agencies, etc. etc. In almost every potential association there is room for creativity to set up a temporary arrangement. As an example, if you are considering adding an affiliate program to your multiple streams of income, be sure to sign up for the service first, check out the product, contact the customer service, etc.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
Performing a trial run will most likely confirm your inclinations of engagement with a particular association. The foundational principles of self mastery and leadership are paramount. Having said that though, most of the relationships you will develop in life and in business are those outside of your immediate circle or business. The companies, organizations, and people you choose to joint venture with will have a significant impact on your journey. The men who wrote my letters of recommendation to the USAFA had a direct impact upon my future. By choosing your associations wisely, you will find great acceleration on your path, often leap frogging over long stretches that will take others a long time to navigate. Choose poorly, and you will be weighted down, or worse - sabotaged on your path to prosperity.
Coaches Corner
Who do you know that could be an asset? Do you trust your first impressions and discernment? What have you learned from previous associations that went sour? Whose counsel do you trust?
When Ann Sieg went on to create the Renegade Phenomena and I went to the Fiji Islands, she took over the helm of the group and continued to support everyone under the umbrella with no financial gain or motive. Even now when there are seasons that my missionary work makes it difficult to be engaged with my organizations, for weeks at a time in some cases. Wendy is there for us.
Sometimes it benefits her financially, sometimes it doesnt, but I know that doesnt really matter to her! She is serving them. She is a true servant. She is serving me.
A leader, especially in the realm of business, must have an authentic desire to see those in his or her care truly excel - even if that means surpassing the them as the leader. The first must be willing to be the last.
A. Lead by example. The leadership principle that is true in any arena is also true here. To be a respected and followed leader, you must lead by example. It is doubly true in organizations where your followers are volunteers. Never ask someone to do something you arent doing or havent done on your pathway to success. B. Be in consistent and systemized action. Many leaders get to their position by chance in our industry. They happen to sponsor someone that develops a strong team under them.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
To be a true leader you must have your own proven methodology that can be passed on. Although your true leaders will take that and tweak it and make it their own, there must be a systemized plan in your organization. Not having proven and market tested methods, or jumping from one good idea to the next does not lend itself to true leadership, and can be abusive to your leaders and organizations. C. Share your values. The main glue that will hold your key people in your organization together is values. By sharing your values you will attract those of a kindred spirit and cultivate meaningful working relationships. Servant leadership means a relationship building business! D. Give to your organization. Another leadership principle is to give, Give and it shall be given back to you . . . Even Jesus said: I did not come to be served, but to serve. When you give of yourself, your time, your energy, and your resources to assist your organization to be successful, you cant help but find success yourself. E. Endure hardship with us like a good soldier. . . Building any business to a high level is tough work. Handling pressure and disappointments is part of the territory. You must have an overall positive disposition. When you get squeezed - what is inside comes out! If you are less than positive - even under duress, then be aware and work on this area of your character. F. Have passion. This characteristic is necessary for significant success in anything. A must read for NWM leaders is Napoleon Hills work: Think and Grow Rich. He talks about the burning desire and the goal setting steps to create something from that desire.
I like to compare what Hill did to what scientists do. Scientists study and discover the great secrets of life and the universe. There are principles and designs that are simply amazing. Napoleon Hill discovered many of the principles that create wealth. (The only negative of the book, like many science books, is
that he writes from a humanistic point of view and doesn't give God credit for the design. Ive written an ebook as a review of his work for those interested: http://www.success-laws.com)

Un-Clear Connections
It was a night that would devastate an organization that I had spent 2 years building with all my heart - and there was little that I could do about it. A small handful of us were on a conference call. A company owner, myself as a leader and independent representative in the company, and a new employee at the corporate office, and a couple of others as well, were on the call. The new employee was a close relative of my main leader and producer in my organization. I was well on my way to a six figure residual income in this company. The company hired his close relative as our organization had much to do with the companys growth. Although this new corporate employees resume looked solid, it only took a few short weeks to realize he had serious handicaps and immaturity in his communication skills.
In this 3 hour conference call in the middle of the night, it was mostly the owner and this new employee talking The owner handled himself well, and the more the conversation developed, the more apparent it became that his new employee had made wrong assumptions, and was making drawing wrong deductions, because of a lack of communication. At one point I was shocked when this person said he was really hurt when two of the corporate officers walked by him in the office and didnt say hello! At that point I knew it was over. This person didnt have the maturity and personal communication skills to operate in the environment. He was fired. Of course that quickly began to unravel my organization as my main leader also left the company and my organization - and the BAD communication (lies, slander, false rumors about the company, etc.) started. Along with some other events that contributed to the downward spiral, the company never really recovered, and almost every key leader eventually left. Communication will not only make or break your business, it will be the glue that holds every meaningful relationship you have together. One of the things I love about entrepreneurship is that the skills learned in the environment of business and marketing can be applied to every relationship we have. The communication skills; effective listening, good question asking, timeliness in correspondence, sensitivity to learning styles, all the various venues of communication with the how and when to use them, etc., all can be sharpened in business training and development. As you prioritize the foundational pillar of good communication and sharpen those skills on your renegade journey - you can also greatly enhance every
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
learned that you can apply to your future. With those parameters in place, let me FIRST give you my conclusion of Ann Siegs and my team debacle - it was the best thing that ever happened to us in business. (I think Ann would agree, but not speaking for her.) This short story is strategically placed in this chapter on the foundation of communication because as I will share from my perspective (I still do not know all the details from Anns or the company owners perspective; nor do I need or want to,) the key for me was to look at CURT and discover what he could have done differently! At the time I had no idea that one of the best things that would ever happen in my life was occurring! Life is funny that way. So, the story line goes something like this . . .
Mastery Matters Through attraction marketing Ann Sieg became a lead of mine. After building a relationship with her through Consultative Selling, to make a long story short she became part of my team. She found success quickly and she joined my key leaders master mind group, helping me with team building. Her potent team building skills were amazing and sharpened. As this season in my business life played out, I became more cognizant of how important it is to be intentional regarding all my associations. She soon become my top player. At the same time I was transitioning into a year of intense missionary activity in the Fiji Islands. From my perspective, that was the #1 reason for my part in the relationship
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
breakdown with the company and company owner. When I was in the Fiji Islands, I simply wasnt available for enough on-going communication with the company. As Anns team grew in size and influence, she began to sell some of the corporate products, along with growing the fastest multiplying organization in that company. Although all of this should have made the companys leadership thrilled, it evidently made the owner nervous. Unfortunately he had fears that were being fuelled by bad communication from other sources (which is often the case in divorces - fear breads gossip and slander; which is also often fuelled by jealousy. I have seen this play out HUNDREDS of times in the arenas of life.) The owner became convinced that our team was plotting to break off and start a whole company to compete with his. This of course was complete lies and fabrication. My fault was not being accountable in my communication with such an important part of my business life. This lack of communication from my end helped fuel this fire of suspicion and controversy. When I finally realized how bad the situation was, and became aggressive in my communication attempts, the owner was avoiding my emails and phone calls. When we did finally speak, he ended up using our personal conversation, twisting all my words and intents to fuel his irrational conspiracy theory, and I was sent a dismissal notice along with Ann and many of our leaders. The only path offered to me by the company was to disassociate myself from Ann, and then I wouldnt lose my HUGE residual check that I had built up over the previous two years. It was basically black mail. It was really a no-brainer. I knew Ann would succeed and thrive, and having grown to trust and respect her, the choice was easy to begin to work with her. She was a true servant leader wanting the best for her leaders, a

core value that we both were and are passionate about - and that is why I followed her then, and with untold thousands follow her now. But choosing to stick with Ann was actually my second reason for not submitting to the demands made for me not to lose my income. You see, even if Ann had packed up her bags and went back to a different business model, I still wouldnt have continued with that company. This tragic story revealed that the owner and his key decision makers and influencers in that company had different core values than I did. This ebook is written with passion - A BURNING DESIRE to not only succeed myself, but to assist many others to succeed. This is a foundational element of success, and a core value, which isnt shared by all companies or uplines. Fortunately, as Ann & I were forced to now pursue a different path than building the company that had just divorced us, we were already heading into multiple streams of income. This paradigm personally saved my familys future. This story reveals the keys to anyones ongoing SOLID and STABLE acquiring of true personal freedom through residual income. Communication Skills are essential for that success. Volumes of material are available in print, audio, and video for communication skill development. The stories in this chapter are simply to point out that you can never have enough good communication in building relationships.

How would you rate your communication skills? What specific steps could you take to improve your communication channels? Do you under or over blame yourself in difficult situations? How do you react when threatened or attacked?
The purpose and objective of this chapter is to pass on to emerging leaders the values, principles, strategies, and techniques that lead to a duplicating and prosperous business. Ive lived in surfing cultures for the past few years now (Hawaii, Fiji Islands, New Zealand.) You can read about surfing and watch it, but until you get on a surf board, you really dont understand it. It is the same with leadership - as you develop a business organization, you will be challenged in new and exciting ways. Guidance from a seasoned surfer can not only dramatically cut your learning curve, but keep you safe. I almost let myself and daughter be swept out to sea on our first surfing excursion because we didnt ask for help! True residual income through multiple streams of income has to include the duplication of key leadership, which is the focus of this chapter.
Introduction
There will be several lessons in this chapter. Each one will contain some insight to the process of identifying, qualifying, training and coaching, and empowering developing leaders.
Note: Some of the foundational principles in this chapter will be biblically based. Although all reading this may not embrace Christianity as their faith, no one could deny that Jesus Christ was the most influential leader that ever walked the face of the planet. When we relate some of the modeling we believe is necessary for duplicating leadership, accept the proven methodology, even if you dont embrace the religion. There are two main scriptural patterns and directives which much of these lessons derive their impetus: #1. And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. Endure hardship with us like a good soldier. . . II Timothy 2: 2-3a There is a qualification process to be a leader. We will reveal specifically about how to identify and qualify someone for key leadership within your organization. #2. He took the twelve disciples aside and said to them . . . Matthew 20:17 Jesus method of leadership was to pour his life primarily into a small group of disciples. His pattern was to spend most of his time with the 12 disciples. It is also apparent in his leadership style that he was closest to 3 of them. In our culture you would say he had 3 of them as his best friends. There is also evidence that he had another larger circle of leaders that included 120 people. This pattern of duplicating leadership will be foundational in the lessons in this chapter. This pattern has been used successfully through the ages and has been termed Master Mind in recent years.
By identifying, qualifying, training and coaching, and empowering developing leaders, you will ensure a long lasting, profitable, and enjoyable journey. But before we embark on this process, lets take a moment to be sure we are ready for this journey . . .

I was asked once by a wise man: What does it takes to be a leader? There were many of us giving answers: Good character. Ethics Wisdom. Compassion. Skill.
The list grew longer and longer. These are all good answers and I was having a hard time with the instructor saying we hadnt gotten the answer right yet. He finally let us know when we had exhausted all our possible guesses - and I agreed with completely with his answer: The only pure answer is: Followers. Let that sink in a little. There have been great leaders through the ages with terrible character, ethics, etc: Hitler, Stalin, etc. There have also been great men and women with incredible wisdom, etc. - but never achieved great leadership in their lifetime. What does that have to do with you and your organizations? Before you set out on the process of cultivating key leadership in your organization, be sure to

review some of the qualities and characteristics we covered on the chapter of Servant Leadership necessary to attract followers: A. Lead by example. B. Be in consistent and systemized action. C. Share your values. D. Give to your organization. E. Handling pressure and disappointments. F. Have passion. Movie Time! - Patton One of my favorite movies! Patton is filled with passion. There is a great scene where he is in trouble again with his authorities and he gives a monologue on how this challenge must be part of his journey because he knows he has a destiny to fulfill! Once you begin on your leadership journey with these elements, you cant help but attract some followers. Out of this group of people that are being attracted to work with you, or already are working with you, will come the KEY leaders you are looking for to create your KEY leadership team - this will be the focus of the chapter. For the sake of this discussion, we will use the term leader to mean the core group of people that will become part of your KEY leadership group, or the Master Mind group you will lead. There will always be a growing group of leaders beyond this inner circle, but we will focus on building the KEY leadership group in this document.
1. Identify Potential Leaders. A. Faithfulness B. Able to Teach. 2. Qualify Potential Leaders A. Time B. Money C. Desire D. Team Player E. Personality 3. Getting a Commitment A. Benefits to Them B. Requirements of Them C. Group Parameters. 4. Training and Coaching Your Key Leaders. A. Foundational Training. B. On-going Training. 5. Empowering Your Key Leaders.
Lesson 1: Identifying Leaders Part of a quote earlier in this document read: . . . entrust to reliable men who will also be qualified to teach others. When looking for potential leaders, there are TWO key characteristics to look for. Remember also that the root word of characteristics is CHARACTER. Character does matter in life and those you will closely work with. The character quality emphasized here for the choosing of leaders is reliable or FAITHFULNESS. The other characteristic is the quality of being able to teach, which we will cover later. A. Faithfulness: steadfast in affection or allegiance . . . firm in adherence to promises or in observance of duty . . . When looking for a leader, establish evidence that they are reliable. Do they do what they say they are going to do? Do they take responsibility for their actions? Are they self motivated, or do they need constant encouragement? Do they quickly deviate from, or neglect the established methods your team uses? These patterns will quickly reveal the faithfulness of a person. Although not as important, another element of selection to be considered is: Is this person faithful to YOU? Many entrepreneurs are looking for the magic company or the magic lead source. Have they jumped around a lot? Do you feel they are committed to you on your journey? Once you have identified someone whom you deem to be faithful, giving them a test or two - without them knowing it, is also a wise thing to do.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
An example might be as simple as having them send you tracking reports, or being available at a certain time for a three-way phone call. Regular attendance of training calls, or progressing through to put up a website, is a great test of faithfulness in a persons character and business. Anyone who regularly attends training calls and/or gets their website up has proven a good level of this characteristic. B. Able to teach others. This second key characteristic you are looking for in potential leaders is a bit more subjective. Bottom line is that there are some very faithful people that simply dont have what it takes to lead others in a significant way - at least enough to be one of your KEY people. The most tangible evidence of this quality is if they are instructing people now, or have done so in the past. Someone who hasnt recruited anyone or had any duplication in their organization may not be a candidate, regardless of how faithful they are. You can also look to their previous experiences in looking for this quality. Someone that has had success in training others in another industry or venue can learn to apply it in your organizations also. In addition to this, you will have to discern their voice and posture levels. This is subjective, BUT leadership will demand a higher level in these areas then simply recruiting does. Some people can recruit, but will need to depend upon their company, system, and upline to do the actually leading. This type of person simply isnt the one you want and need for your KEY leadership. They must have a higher level of confidence and clarity in their phone presence than the average independent representative. Another clue to their ability to teach others is their own desire to learn and be taught. Great leaders are always learning and growing themselves. Again - not all great students make good teachers, but all great teachers are good students.
Story Time! - Lessons in Leadership One of my closest friends ended up being a royal pain. He was on the board of our church we founded. What took me a long time to discern is although he was a good man with high principles, he simply couldnt conceive that his structured belief system was flawed. Bottom line - he was very unteachable. I remember one conversation we were having and I said to him: Well George, that is your opinion. You thought I had hit him in the face. From his point of view, his perspective wasnt an opinion, but was reality. I learned that strong people, even good strong people may not be the best choices when you want to work as a team. These guidelines will help you spot potential leaders. Once you have spotted them, you can take it to the next level and start the qualification process. But DONT ASK ANYONE YET . . .
Lesson 2: Qualifying Leaders It is very important to do some qualifying BEFORE the person knows you are considering them for your KEY leadership team. When someone knows they are being considered they may perform at a higher than normal level to impress you, but it wont be coming from their true inner core and will be short lived. Some of the same things that you would qualify a prospect for, are the same things that you want to be doubly sure of in qualifying a KEY leader:
Time. Be sure they have the time to devote to the business. Besides the time necessary to grow their team and lead by examples, they will need extra time to devote to the new leadership aspect of their business.
Money. Be sure to qualify on money. In addition to the all important marketing budget, they may need extra resources so they can assist their team - lead generation, training resources, awards, etc. Desire. The WHY? Factor. Revisit this vital well of energy and determination.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
It takes an on-going, never fading WHY to take a business to a higher level. Take the time to have a conversation with them regarding these items before you tell them you are considering them to be part of your KEY leadership team. Hopefully you as a potential leader of leaders have a heart for the underdog, but dont let your compassion cloud your vision in selecting a Key Leader. You can fudge on some of these when you are recruiting a distributor, but you are doing a disservice to the person, yourself, and the other leaders, if you overlook any of these 3 items in selecting a KEY leader. You may want to get input from other team mates on what they think of the person. Be careful - dont gossip or create suspicion. The best ones to ask are those already in a leadership role in your organization. Other qualifiers to seriously consider are: A. Are they a team player? Remember that most of your KEY leadership will not directly impact the income of each other, or in the marketing arena they will be not directly impacted financially by each other. Some people are interested in assisting others only if there is a direct financial benefit to them. Do they demonstrate a desire to help anyone? To analyze in a humorous way: Do they play well with others? Movie Time! - Hoosiers There is a scene in this movie about team work that is awesome. The basketball coach has a small team of 7 or 8 players. It is early in the season and he has to bench one of his best players because the kid isnt listening and not playing as a team, even though personally the kid is hot. He has his last 5 players on the floor when someone fouls out, leaving just him short with just 4 players. The hot kid on the bench begins to go out on the floor and the coach says: Where do you think you are going? Sit
down! The referee comes over to the coach and says: You only have 4 players on the court! The coach says: My team is on the floor! They go on to get beat miserably, but end up having a phenomenal season because of TEAM WORK. Things like bad temperament, quick anger fits, prejudice, and other traits can thwart the synergy and community you must create with your KEY leadership group . B. Do you like them? This may seem like a strange question, but think about it. This person could very well become one of your best friends and vacation buddies in the years to come as you create wealth together. Even Jesus liked three of the disciples more than the other nine. How personalities line up does make a difference.
Lesson 3: Getting a Commitment from Leaders Finally! You have someone you are excited about asking into your inner circle. Now that you have identified and qualified your prospect, it is time to ask them! Some things to consider here as you take this step: A. It is easier to ask someone to join, than to ask them to leave! There is always the element of taking a risk that cannot be avoided, but this is a good thing to consider. Make sure you go over the parameters and commitments you expect of them when you ask them to your Key Leadership group. This will help you if a Key leader stops performing and you need to ask them to step down from the group.
Story Time! - Lessons in Leadership I had a good leader and friend in our Master Mind group. Gradually his activity level decreased and he started to miss our meetings. To make a long story short, when I finally got a hold of him he said he wasnt going to work his business for a while, but wanted to stay in the master mind group. I tried to sympathize with his challenges, but said that he would need to step down from the group since he wasnt fulfilling his obligations. He took it VERY hard, much to my surprise . You will become close to those in your Key Leadership group, but keep this clear in your mind: Great friendships are formed out of working together but your leadership group is for WORK, with the fruit and side benefit of being great friends - not the other way around. It is important to delineate clear parameters when getting a commitment, and to hold a Key Leader to that commitment if it would ever start to waver. B. Why would they want to join your Key leadership group? Be sure to list the benefits to them for joining your Key leadership group. Be prepared and have written out, at least in outline form, the benefits to them in joining and the commitment you are asking of them. Here is an example - but the following is just an example of the benefits and commitments of what YOUR group MAY be like: Benefits: 1. You will personally prioritize them in your time and attention to assist them in building their business. 2. They benefit directly from the power of the Master Mind. (Have them read Think and Grow Rich and my editorial Think Again and Grow Richer, if they havent already.) 3. You will be sharing everything you know with them.

Joe, if you decide this group is right for you, I want you to know that I plan on HIGHLY prioritizing my time and energy to ensure your success. I will be work closely with you and assist you in applying the power of master minding to your business. 4. When appropriate, you will not only be building with them, but may be building under them through sharing of leads, prospects, and placing people under them. Commitment to require of one of your Key Leaders: 1. All the requirements of an active business builder in chosen business. 2. Weekly one hour MM call with you and the Key Leadership group. 3. Committed to any training call your Key Leadership group hosts. 4. Personally accountable to YOU for not only stats, but also their life in general so you can know what outside forces/challenges may be affecting their business (marriage, kids, job, etc.) Ensure that your requirements and benefits are basically the same for everyone that you ask to the group. Perceptions of playing favorites can lead to jealousy and cause a cancer in the group. C. Group Parameters. Another aspect is to determine the definition of the group the best you can BEFORE you ask anyone to join it. The more specific you can be the better. *How many participants will you have in the group? *When will the group officially be launched? *How long of a commitment are you asking for? *Who else is already in the group or been asked?

Joe, I am forming an exclusive and elite Leadership group, by April 15 . I will have selected 7 others and myself for this Key Leadership group of 8. I would like to consider you to be a part. I am asking for a solid commitment through the rest of the year. When you ask them be sure to give them sincere compliments. Make them feel special (because they are!) to be invited into this elite and exclusive group. Dont push for or expect an answer right then - give them a couple days to think about it. This lets them know you are taking this VERY seriously and that you want them to also! You may have been thinking about them in this context possibly for months, so give them some time. Pulling all this together, when you ask them, it may sound something like this . . . Joe, you have really gotten my attention over the past few weeks. Your zeal, creativity and energy is awesome. I would count it a privilege to work more closely with you. I am forming an exclusive and elite Leadership group, by April 15. I will have selected 7 others and myself for this Key Leadership group of 8. I would like to consider you to be a part. I am asking for a solid commitment through the rest of the year. Besides what you are already doing, we will be meeting 1 hour per week as a group, and there may be some additional work we will do together to benefit the team. Joe, if you decide this group is right for you, I want you to know that I plan on HIGHLY prioritizing my time and energy to ensure your success. I will work closely with you and assist you in applying the power of master minding to your business. This has been a Key ingredient in my success, and I want to share it with you. Lesson 4: Training & Coaching Leaders A crucial thing to remember is that this group, YOUR group, is also THEIR group. You are a leader among peers. These people are special or you wouldnt have asked them. Everyone has talents or strengths that you dont have, and vice versa. It is important to lead, but to treat them as equals and give plenty of room for them to stretch

th
their leadership skills. Not all leaders can handle having other strong leaders around, or handle the true Master Mind environment of peers - even some good leaders feel they must always be the official trainer or coach. Story Time! - Lessons in Leadership My first job as a pastor was on a large church staff. The senior pastor was a gifted man that liked having other strong people on his staff. I was the last of about 15 staff pastors to be hired by him. It was a privilege and great learning experience to be in this group of strong leaders. About a year after I was hired, the senior pastor left and the church hired a new one from the outside. The board made a condition that he would not fire anyone of the pastors already on staff. As soon as the new guy came in, he began to change the staff pastors portfolios, etc. He made them miserable, and one by one they went on to find other jobs. After 3 years, all the other pastors where gone, and it was my turn. Making a long story short when he sat me down to change my portfolio, I responded that I was called to what I was doing and he had 3 choices: 1. Leave me where I am. 2. Give me both assignments, I was not afraid of hard work. 3. Fire me. Great leaders enjoy other strong leaders to work with. Know your destiny and do not compromise. There are different leadership models and styles, but the one that creates the strongest leaders are those people who can handle and enjoy having other strong leaders around them. All of us need foundational and on-going training.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
1. Role Playing & Walk Throughs. If your key leaders are not sponsoring or producing at a good level consistently, offer to do roll playing with them and possibly another leader to help sharpen their skills. 2. Some of your key leaders may need weekly coaching in the transition from being just a rep or member in your organization to a Key Leader. If you dont have the time or skills to do this, go to your upline or organizational leaders, or a paid coach, for this need. 3. Involve them in 3-way phone calls with your work - just to listen to you make calls or do a consultation. Maybe include them in a coaching session with someone in your organization. Always be thinking in everything you do in your business how you can include your Key Leaders as a part to kill two birds with one stone. 4. Assist them in recognizing and working on building with their strengths. We all have strengths and weaknesses. Great leaders concentrate more on building on their strengths than trying to improve the areas of weakness. Both are necessary, but lead with YOUR strength and show them how to do the same. Sharing quality business, marketing or inspirational books you have read. Readers Lead and Leaders Read! Lesson 5: Empowering Leaders It is very rewarding to see your Key Leaders grow and find success. Just like a parent, a true leader will be excited when a Key Leader passes them up in success or skill in any area. Here are some tips and elements to bring to the MM group that will empower your Key Leaders: 1. Restate and resell the vision over & over again. Remind your Key Leaders often of the vision and THEIR vision.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
2. Keep them accountable. Ultimately you want your leaders to be accountable to themselves, but the transition from employee to selfemployed may be challenging for many of your leaders.
Although not one of us want another boss, human nature is still what it is. People will do what is inspected, not expected. So often you will need to hold them accountable to lead by example - tracking sheets, monthly benchmarks, awards they should be getting, etc. Story Time! - Lessons in Leadership When I was pastoring the church we had founded, I had a couple of men in my inner circle that were very different from each other. Peter was vocal, aggressive, type A, etc. He was a doctor I was grooming to take over my position. Paul was quiet with a meek personality. Through my relationships with them I learned about pride and humility. If one million people would meet them and I asked them to guess which one had pride and made team work difficult, I am convinced no one would have picked Paul. Here is a key to working with Leaders: Personality type has little to do with Character. Paul was the most prideful key leader I have ever worked with. Peter was humble. In conflict and difficult times Paul NEVER assumed responsibility or would reciprocate asking for forgiveness. Peter always did. Lesson? Dont assume your aggressive leaders are prideful, and dont assume your sweet or nice ones are good team players simply based on their temperament or personality type. It is character that matters in leadership, and flawed character that can spoil the community and synergy you need to create.
MLM Mastery Coach Curt Johnson
3. Create Community. Those in your Key Leadership group should have regular attendance to your weekly call together. This ongoing communication will create camaraderie and friendship. Develop trust and communication. Encourage them to always reach out not only to you, but to each other. Have a group email for only them. Make sure you have them on a group IM (instant message service like Skype) and connect with them on a regular basis. Remind them that you appreciate them being a part of your ELITE and EXCLUSIVE key leadership group. Both in the group setting and throughout the week - just be with them. Another quote I like: Rejoice with those who Rejoice - Weep with those who Weep. 4. Give Awards and Recognition. People love winners and love to be winners. The love getting cards and gifts. Celebrate the BIG and little achievements with them. Publicly praise them whenever it is appropriate. Everyone enjoys recognition, especially in front of their peers or organization.
5. Share inside information. Take the chance to share inside information that you may know. Obviously you dont want to break confidence with someone, but if you know something about the company, or future plans that the field doesnt know share it with your Key Leaders! They have a huge interest in the future plans, just as you do. Trust them and they will trust you.
6. Give them TEAM responsibility. Your MM group will be discussing and sharing challenges that will be in your organization. Help your KEY leaders be a part of the solution. Let them know you want them to participate and offer their input. When your Key leadership comes up with plans to assist the organization, have them participate. Examples would be to have them host or assist in the training that your team provides; or have them draft or edit documents that will be for the organization, etc. Ask them to S-TR-E-T-C-H past their comfort zones. 7. Be successful. The best thing you can do for your Key Leaders is to be successful yourself. When they see you ahead of them on the journey, it lets them know what is possible and doable. If Curt can do it, I can do it!
