Power Quality Assessment

Services for Business-Critical Continuity

Ensure The Highest Levels Of Power Quality

I

High Quality Power Doesnt Just Happen

The power that feeds your business-critical electronic systems directly effects its proper operation. Maximizing your availability requires a constant stream of high quality power. But as facilities change, power quality can be compromised. Grounding problems can occur due to loose connections caused by vibration, lighting strikes, and/or corrosion. The ongoing application of non-linear loads can subject a system to sustained high-magnitude harmonic voltage, which can lead to data communications errors, hardware damage, and personal safety concerns. The Emerson Network Power Service Power Quality Assessment provides a comprehensive analysis of the quality of power in your facility along with recommendations for corrective action.
I

Improve system performance Reduce the likelihood of equipment failure Enhance personal safety

Grounding System Test Determines the presence of unsafe or unreliable grounds in the critical power system. Ensures the integrity of the facility's grounding system (and the quality of the ground), and verifies it per industry standards. Harmonic and Load Analysis Examines the loads within your facility to identify if there are unnecessary high-magnitude harmonic voltage risks that could adversely affect system performance.

Resolve Power Quality Issues Before They Cause System Failure

The Power Quality Assessment will provide a review of your power quality today and make recommendations for how to improve it for tomorrow.

Recognizing the Symptoms of a Power Quality Problem

The indicators of a power quality are varied, but some problems to look for include:
I I I I

Premature equipment failure Equipment turning on or off unexpectedly Erratic equipment performance Unexpected energized metal panels or components that appear to be carrying a charge that shouldnt be Overheating of motors or other conducting equipment

Understanding Harmonic Distortion The most common electrical waveform distortion is the harmonic a natural multiple of the standard voltage wave. Harmonics can be triggered by poor grounds, motors, factory equipment, elevators, fluorescent lighting or devices that switch on and off rapidly.

Distorted Harmonic Wave (shown in pink)

Essentially, as these non-linear loads draw from your electrical system, they create harmonics within the power lines themselves. Harmonics result in distortion of the sine wave and can create data communications errors and hardware damage for computers, network peripherals and other technology-based equipment.

High quality power enhances the availability of your data center.

Grounding System Test

Purpose The grounding system in a facility is critical for proper equipment operating conditions and personal safety. An improper ground can adversely affect system performance, cause equipment failure, or even personal injuries.

Harmonic and Load Analysis

Purpose This service will determine the impact of nonlinear loads and their associated harmonic contributions on the voltage and currents throughout the electrical system.

What We Do: We will determine the integrity of the grounding system and, if necessary, make recommendations for repair. For the main breaker panel and two points within the building, we will complete the following: Visual and Mechanical Inspection I Verify ground system is in compliance with ANSI/NFPA 70, National Electrical Code, Article 250.
I I

What We Do: The harmonic-analysis study will be performed in accordance with the recommended practices and procedures set forth in ANSI/IEEE standard 399 for one point in your facility. Customers have the option of recording data over 7-days or 30-days. What You Get: A detailed report that includes: I Basis, description, purpose and scope of the study.
I

Inspect physical and mechanical condition. Verify tightness of accessible bolted electrical connections by calibrated torque--wrench method in accordance with manufacturer's published data. Inspect anchorage.

Tabulations of the data used to model the system components and a corresponding one-line diagram. Descriptions of the scenarios evaluated and the basis for each. Tabulations of rms voltages, peak voltages, rms currents, and total capacitor bank loading versus associated equipment ratings. Equipment with insufficient ratings will be identified for each of the scenarios evaluated. Tabulations of calculated voltage distortion factors, current distortion factors, and individual harmonics versus the limits specified by IEEE standard 519. Calculated values exceeding the limits specified in the standard will be noted. Plots of impedance versus frequency showing resonant frequencies to be avoided. Tabulations of the system transformer capabilities based on the calculated nonsinusoidal load current and the procedures set forth in ANSI/IEEE C57.110. Overloaded transformers will be identified. Conclusions and recommendations.

Electrical Tests I Perform fall-of-potential test in accordance with IEEE Standard 81 on the main grounding electrode or system or
I

Perform point-to-point tests to determine the resistance between the main grounding system and all major electrical equipment frames, system neutral, and/or derived neutral points.
I

What You Get: Results will be summarized in a final report containing findings and recommendations for system improvement.
