Information About The Final Exam: Xdydx
The final will cover all sections we have covered. Obviously not every section will be on the exam but the sections 15.8, 9, 16.1-4 will be represented since they were not covered on a previous exam. We will have relevant formulas on the board for your reference. No calculators will be allowed or needed for the test. The exam problems will be very similar to the problems from the list below.
1. Find the distance of the point P (1,1,2) from the plane x + 2y z = 5. 2. Determine whether the point P (1,1,2) is on the line given by r(t) = <3-t, 4-2t, 1+t>. Justify your conclusion. 3. Find the vector equation of a line which goes through the point P (1,1,2) and is parallel to the plane x + 2y z = 5. (There are many different such lines.) 4. Sketch the traces of the surface x2 + y2 - z2 =9 for z = -2, 0, 4 and use them to give a rough sketch of the surface. 5. Consider the curve given by the parametric equations r(t) = <2 cos t, t, 2 sin t> a. State the equations of two surfaces, which contain the curve. b. Describe how the curve looks either in words or by making a quick sketch. 6. Find the parametric equations for the tangent line for the curve with the equation r(t) = < 5t, 3t2+1, e2t > in the point (0, 1, 1). 7. Two particles travel along the space curves r1(t) = <3-t, t2-2, 2-t> and r2(t) = <2t-1, t+1, t-1>. a. Do the particles collide? Explain. b. Do the curves intersect? Explain. 8. Find the directional derivative of f(x,y) = the vector PQ, where Q is the point (3, 4). 9. Use the method of LaGrange multipliers to find the maximal and minimal values of the function f(x,y) = x2y subject to the constraint x2 +2y2 = 6. (Make sure you find all points where the gradients are parallel.) 10. Consider the integral
