Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo was one of the major disciples of Vimalamitra and an important figure during the reign of King Thrisong Detsen. He received the full transmission of teachings from both Padmasambhava and Vimalamitra.

Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo was a disciple of Padmasambhava and Vimalamitra. He was an advisor to King Thrisong Detsen from a young age and helped invite Vimalamitra to Tibet. He played an important role during the reign of King Ralchenpo as well.

Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo received the full transmission of the Atiyoga teachings from Vimalamitra. He is also mentioned as receiving teachings directly from Vimalamitra during secret midnight teachings.

Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo was one of the major disciples of the master Vimalamitra. As guardian and advisor to King Thrisong Detsen from the time the king was a young child, he recommended inviting Vimalamitra to Tibetan. Becoming a disciple to both the Great Guru Padmasambhava and Vimalamitra, Nyang Tingdzin received the full transmission of the Atiyoga Man-ngag-de from Vimalamitra. One line of transmission descended from Nyangwe Tingdzin Zangpo to Khu Jyangchup O'd to Khyungpo Yik O'd, and eventually to Rangzom Mahapandita. Before he proceeded to Riwo-tse-nak (Wu-tai-shan), Vimalamitra imparted the precepts of the Nying-thik to King Thrisong Detsen and Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo who had been the king's play-mate. During the reign of King Ralchenpo, Nyang founded the monastic settlement of Zhva'i Lha Khang and built the temple of U-ru-zwa, in which he hid the precepts of the Nyingthik, known as Vima Nying-thik, Vimalamitra's Heart Drop Instructions, and gave instructions to Drom Rinchen Bar. Nyang Tingdzin became an important figure during the king's reign (755797) and a prominent supporter of the growing Buddhist Sangha.

At the age of fifty-five (c. 836), he was executed by Lang Darma because he would not discontinue his Buddhist practice. On the day after his execution, rainbows appeared in the sky and natural miracles were observed to the amazement of all. Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo taught the 'Lineage of Words' (tshig-brgyud) to Drom Rinchen Bar, who in turn taught them to Wae Lodro Wangchuk. Sometime later, Nyang's hidden precepts were discovered and practiced by Dangma Lhungyal, who transmitted the instructions to the noted Jetsun Senge Wangchuk from upper Nyang, and bestowed on him the seven degrees of these mystic precepts. Jetsun, in turn, bestowed the precepts on Nyang Kadampa, who then meditated on the rock of Tidro of Zo (Little Lake), and passed away, vanishing line a rainbow. Jetsun resided in the mountain range between Sang and U-yuk, practiced meditation, and obtained miraculous powers. He hid the precepts in three secret locations: U-yuk, Langdro Chepa Tak, and Jalgyi Phu. The Vima Nying-thik texts are preserved in the Rinchen Ter-dzod, while eight texts translated by Nyangwe are preserved in the Kagyur and Tengyur. It is said that Nyangwe Tingdzin Zangpo had completely realized the fruit of the Vajrayana and was supreme among the one hundred and eight disciples of Guru Padmasambhava. Out of great kindness he returned to Tibet as the monk and Terten Rigdzin Jatson Nyingpo.

By night in the inner sanctum of Utse Riksum, without anyone else's knowledge, Vimalamitra taught the tantras, explanatory commentaries, and pith instructions of the sublime secret to five people: the king, Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo, the prince Mune Tsepo, and the two translators Kawa Paltsek and Chokyi Luyi Gyaltsen. (Ma Rinchen Chok had passed away, and so was not present on these occasions. Whoever claims that na more than two people were present-king and Nyang-- is an ignorant fool.) Vimalamitra later combined these instruction in a single collection of the so-called four profound volumes and concealed them as a cache of termas in Gegong at the cliff known as Drakmar in Chimpu. He then proceeded to the five-peaked mountain of Wu Tai Shan in China. He will remain there until this eon has come to an end. Since this supreme scholar and siddha attained the rainbow-body of supreme transference, he will remain in the form of a human being for as long as the Buddha's teachings endure; an emanation of his will appear every century in Tibet. It was from this holy Guru that Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo heard the teachings. Once Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo had received the complete transmission of the tantras, ezplanatory commentaries, and pith instructions of the sublime secret fromVimalamitra, the latter departed for China. For fifty-five years, Nyang practiced as he had been instructed, totally purifying his mind and experiencing his body on a very subtle level. The guardian Vajrasadhu made hail fall in a region in eastern Tibet and obtained a harvest of five-hundred camel loads of barley as a result.Nyang threw a nine-pronged golden

vajra into the sky, inciting Vajrasadhu to recall his former samaya commitments. The guardian then offered the grain to Nyang, who accepted it to finance the temple of Zhai Lhakang and enjoined Vajrasadhu to be its protective deity. It was within this temple, thus erected with nonhuman sources of material and wealth, that Nyang placed the explanatory tantras associated with the lineage of the Nyingthik teachings, concealing three cycles within three layers of crypts. A clay urn filled with scrolls, the manuscripts of the oral lineage, was concealed above the lintel of the gatehouse. Nyang concealed The Golden Heart Essence: The Intensely Illuminating Sun, a text from the most secret unsurpassable cycle, in the three-tiered capital of the central pillar. For the benefit of future generations of fortunate people, he applied seals to these, rendering them invisible. He recorded the annotated texts of the oral lineage and entrusted them to Lodro Wangchuk of the Be clan, thus ensuring that the transmission of the lineage was intact. When he passed away, he dissolved inot a mass of light in the sky above Draklha Cave near Lhasa, leaving no physical remains. It was from this holy Guru that Lodro Wangchuk of the Be clam heard the teachings of the Natural Great Perfection.

Fifty-five years after Vimalamitra went to China, Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo became one who had exhausted the corruptions. When the deity Dorje Lekpa devastated Kham with a hailstorm, he offered to Nyang the one hundred camel-loads of barley [he had received for doing the act], on the basis of which Nyang built the Zha Temple in Uru. He concealed the books which contained the instructions in the entrance pillar of the three-tiered portico of the temple; and he gave the teachings of the aural lineage to Dro Rinchen Barwa. Finally, in the Trak Lhalu Cave at Lhasa, Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo vanished in the rainbow body. Nyang teachings, in what is know as the Kham tradition of the Great Perfection, were transmitted in this way: There were the esoteric instructions given by Vimalamitra to Nyang Tingdzin Zangpo, and those which he taught to Ma Rinchen Chok and Nyak Jnanakumara. Both were transmitted throught Khu Jangchup-O to Khyungpo Yik-O, and by stages came down to Rongzom Mahapandita {from here it is easily traced}.
