BRIEF SYNOPSIS
The most frequently joining process of metallic materials and structures is welding. In order to guarantee the strength of welded structures different design codes have been developed during the last 30 years and have been applicable within the manufacturing industry with low accuracy and precision. However, nowadays high strength steels are utilized in load carrying structural applications in order to produce more lightweight welded structures which need more accurate design methods in order to assure the structural integrity. As the finite element analysis is nowadays a widely used tool, new developed design codes are applicable with better accuracy and precision. In this course, methods for fatigue analysis of welded structures using FEM and fracture mechanics are taught. The course also includes several case studies where different approaches are used for fatigue life assessment. Participants should bring their own laptops for installation purpose of open source FEM. Knowledge on welding design and basic FEM are desirable but not required. Participants are encouraged to submit their real industrial problems before 30 April 2013 to the organizer to be discussed as a selected case study during the workshop.

FACILITATORS
Advanced Manufacturing Technology Excellence Centre (AMTEx) was established in January 2009. As a relatively new research and development centre in the field of manufacturing technology, the activities focus on bridging science, manufacturing and industrial practices. The missions of AMTEx are to provide consultancy, offer training and workshops to industries and academicians, carry out research activities at postgraduate levels (Master, PhD and Post Doctoral) and conduct special topics and courses for undergraduate students. BRAAK Engineering Sdn. Bhd. was formed on 2010 under the Companies Act 1965 as a 100% Bumiputra Company which is a combination masterpiece of ideas among the professional partners participating in a range of services . Our goal is to exceed the expectations of every client by offering distinctive engineering solutions, outstanding customer service, increased flexibility, and greater value, thus optimizing system functionality and improving operation efficiency .
