The Beekeeping Industry is one of the thrust activity under the purview of Khadi and Village Industries Commission. The commission has reviewed the functioning of the "Zonal Beekeeping Extension Center" which was set up by the Office Order No. 1846, dated 4th January 1999 and in order to have an effective co-ordination between the Beekeepers, wild honey collector NGOs, KVIC/KVIB Institutions, the Commission has decided to restructure the present "Zonal Beekeeping Extension Centre "in to "State Beekeeping Extension Center " in its 520th Meeting held on 29/30.8.2003. The broad activities, role of the functions of the "State Beekeeping Extension Center", Infrastructure potential State, strategy, New location of establishment of the "State Beekeeping Extension Center" is enclosed herewith. All concerned State/Regional Directors, wherever "State Beekeeping Extension Center" are to be established or in the process of being established, are therefore to take note of the above restructured functional arrangements of State Beekeeping Extension Center for future reference and guidelines for Implementation of the Beekeeping Development Programmes in the States. BROAD OBJECTIVES, ROLE AND FUNCTIONS OF THE STATE BEEKEEPING EXTENSION CENTRE(SBEC)

The Most Potential States for Beekeeping are:Punjab, West Bengal, Bihar, Kerala, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Tamilnadu and Uttaranchal,

The number of beekeepers and honey production are maximum in these States. The Medium Potential States for beekeeping are (1) Andhra Pradesh, (2) Assam, (3) Himachal Pradesh, (4) Jammu & Kashmir, (5) Jharkhand, (6) Madhya Pradesh, (7) Meghalaya (8) Orissa. (9) Maharashtra (10) Chattisgarh (11) Haryana The potential is available but the beekeepers and colonies are considerably less in number. The Less Potential States for beekeeping are (1) Gujarat, (2) Manipur, (3) Mizoram, (4) Tripura, (5) Rajasthan, (6) Sikkim, (7) Goa, (8) Arunachal Pradesh and (9) Andaman Nicobar. C.B.R.T.I., Pune will study on the potential of beekeeping in these States. Infrastructure needed for SBEC:1. ZBEC and BEC will be named as State Beekeeping Extension Centre (SBEC). SBEC will be relocated at MDTC or rented premises near State Office/KVIB run training centre. 2. Places, where beekeepers, forest bee collectors concentration are more will be selected for SBEC in medium potential states. 3. Infrastructure facility like Laboratory, Training premises, Hostel facilities, Library facility will be available at SBEC. 4. State BEC will be under direct control of State Director & Incharge of the centre will be principal of MDTC or State/Regional Director where MDTC is not available. 5. Apiary of 25 50 bee colonies in Most potential states and 50 to 100 bee colonies in Medium potential states will be maintained in an apiary near by area of SBEC.

6. One of the Honey processing centre in nearby area will be identified for processing of honey of bee keepers/NGOs at the time of training (for field visit, operation of work, practical working of trainees etc.). 7. One official from CBRTI will be selected as Nodal Officer for each SBEC for technical upgradation of the centre. FUNCTION OF THE STATE BEEKEEPING EXTENSION CENTRES :I. Training on Skill Upgradation for Apis mellifera & Apis cerena: To conduct different level training courses of 15/30 days. Specific training on Quality Control of honey. To conduct training on queen rearing technique. Follow up action for making trainees as an entrepreneur. Distribution of bee boxes, colonies, CF sheet quality queen to Beekeepers in medium potential states II Skill Upgradation for Apis dorsata: (a) (b) (c) (d) Training to wild honey collector for 15 days. Distribution of protective dresses/ladders etc. Exclusive follow up of trained artisans. Specific training on quality control of honey.

III. Quality Upgradation by processing honey, through scientific honey processing units Other Activities :1. Improvement in Design of levels, packaging & bottling through PRODIP scheme. 2. To establish C.F.C./RISC/Other schemes in the area for beekeeping activities. 3. Testing of honey of beekeepers. 4. Extension visit to the institutions. 5. Meeting with Beekeepers, NGO, Marketing agents, Packers, Resource person in beekeeping in the area for integrated development. 6. Preparing Bee flora information & floral calendar district-wise. 7. Enlistment of beekeepers in the area. 8. Bee disease identification & suggesting preventive measure. Strategy:1. 2. 3. 4. 5. Skill up-gradation for improvement of technology. The work and performance of the State Beekeeping Extension Centre shall be rigorously monitored by the State /Regional Directors, since the administrative control of the technical staff of FBI is under their jurisdiction. The technical staff of Directorate of FBI posted at State Beekeeping Extension Centre will be exclusively utilised for implementation of Beekeeping Development Programme including the Honey Mission and they will not be transferred from the State Beekeeping Extension Centre without the consent of the Directorate of FBI. Director, CBRTI, will be responsible for providing all technical guidance to the State Beekeeping Extension Centre, and monitoring its R&D Projects, Training activities, and also can utilize its full infrastructure facilities, resources for implementation of R&D Projects under S&T.
