Systems Life Cycle Worksheet
Systems Life Cycle Worksheet
a task the system must go through stages of production. An example of a system is a Hospital pharmacy system for keeping track of drugs and creating printed prescriptions, appointment systems for outpatients. Research each stage to find out what takes place within each stage of production when creating a new system. He/she had to decide based upon several factors whether it is actually feasible to go ahead and develop the system. Analysis The system analyst presents his/her ideas to the management department in the company regarding the various solutions to overcome the problems in the current system. The management department of the company would then decide whether they would like a brand new IT system or changes made to their existing system. Design The project manager and the client have now agreed on the requirements specification and define how the project is going to be carried out. The project manager plans the project in detail so that the system meets the user requirements. Programming The software developers begin to write the code and develop the new system. They will follow the system requirements specification exactly and should not deviate from it in any way without consulting the analyst. At this stage, the system has been fully developed and tested. It is working correctly and doing everything that was agreed during the design stage. The company is eagerly waiting for the new system to be handed over to them. There is a choice between the four methods of installing the system which are: direct, parallel, phased and pilot.

Name:
Maintenance This phase continues for the lifetime of the system. The technical documentation is essential to support the maintenance stage. There are three kinds of maintenance needed: corrective maintenance, adaptive maintenance and perfective maintenance. Below is a diagram showing the System Life Cycle. For each stage give examples of the types of information found or used to create the end product. Imagine you were creating a new accounts system for a branch of Harris Bank. They would need a system which could hold all customer information, gather and update details of their accounts and inform them of changes to their account (e.g accepting or rejecting a mortgage application) and send automatic monthly statements. Use this banking system as a basis for your research and to help you fill in the life cycle diagram.

Name: Once you have completed the diagram read and think about the following article from the BBC Website: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/northern_ireland/7484537.stm The article focuses on the mistakes that can occur when creating a system and what can happen if any section of the life cycle is missed out. Answer the following questions: 1. What could have been done better in this situation? The system should have been fully tested before being implemented. 2. What could reduce the chances of failure? Constantly maintaining the system. 3. Why would the system life cycle be a circular process? It is circular because each step cannot be completed without the previous being completed first.
