None of the few Design for Reliability (DFR) books currently available addresses the process from the owners (or buyers) perspective. Instead, they approach DFR strictly from the sellers (or manufacturers) viewpoint. As a result, few assets are designed and developed with the intent to meet the future owners specific needs for reliability, availability, and maintainability over the life of the asset. In this groundbreaking new book, Dan Daley intends to correct the imbalance in how DFR is often implemented by providing owners with the tools they need to ensure that their requirements - not the sellers - are followed in developing new assets. This book will be an invaluable guide to everyone involved in the design, development, or purchase of new assets. It will help owners take the necessary steps to get what they really need, and it will help sellers deliver the goods that their customers the owners actually want. FEATURES Explains how to properly integrate DFR activities with conventional design activities. Provides a simple system to ensure DFR activities are completed on time. Provides spreadsheets and forms needed to portray design results in a clear and usable format. Includes the tables and forms needed to support the design processes and procedures presented in each chapter. Includes appendices that provide an example specification that owners can modify when procuring a new asset and example tables useful in assessing how well the DFR process has met the owners needs. Table of Contents: Introduction. Differences in Perspectives. DFR for the Sellers Business Model. DFR for the Owners Business Model. Reliability Analysis. Availability Analysis. Maintainability Analysis. Organizing for Concurrent Engineering. Obtaining the Cooperation of the Seller. After the Purchase is Completed. Conclusion. Appendices. Index.

Volume III: Holbrook L. Horton, 1951, 536 pp.,illus., ISBN: 978-0-8311-1031-4, $41.95
Each of the four volumes is an independent treatise on the subject of mechanisms. The books are similar in size and general character, but the contents are different. The mechanisms described are grouped into chapters according to general types. A complete index, is arranged by function. It is easy to find the class of movement desired and enables you to compare mechanisms which are similar in purpose but different in design. The descriptions and illustrations are confined to the important and fundamental elements, so that time is not wasted on useless or irrelevant details. You are told briefly what each mechanism consists of, how it operates, and the features which make it of special interest. The particular mechanisms have been selected because they have stood the test of actual practice. Among the mechanisms described and illustrated by working diagrams are: cam applications and special cam designs; intermittent motions from gears and cams; interlocking devices; valve diagrams; reversing mechanisms of special design; tripping or stop mechanisms; drives of crank type for reciprocating driven members; feeding mechanisms and auxiliary devices; feeding and ejecting mechanisms; and many more.
Retaining its unique and much praised organization, this leading text has been revised to reflect the most recent developments in design tools. It provides balanced coverage of relevant fundamentals and real-world practices so that students, apprentices and on-the-job professionals can understand the important and often complex interrelationships between die design and the economic factors involved in manufacturing sheetmetal forming products. Following introductory material and a discussion of 20 types of dies in Chapter 2, the design process of a representative die is separated into seventeen distinct chapters. Each chapter is one step which is illustrated in two ways; first, as a portion of an engineering drawing, that is, as the component is actually drawn on the design. Second, the die design is shown pictorially in order to improve the users visualization. In successive sections each step is detailed as it is applied to the design of the various types of dies listed in Chapter 2.

Value Analyis Tear-Down: A New Process for Product Improvement and Innovation
The key to understanding how to produce products with low response time, low inventory, and flexibility can be found in this important text. Using a systematic approach, this unique analysis of contemporary manufacturing processes identifies family characteristics of individual processes to facilitate learning. In all, six families of SHAPING processes that change the basic geometry of shape of a workpiece (Mechanical, Mass Reducing, Thermal Mass Reducing, Chemical Mass Reducing, Mass Conserving, Consolidation, and Joining) and four families of NON-SHAPING processes that modify the engineering and aesthetic properties of materials (Hardening, Softening, Surface Preparation, and Surface Coatings) are identified and studied. This classification, or taxonomy, now used in the United States and Europe, is a valuable tool in identifying processes and their capabilities. Using the same classification system, detailed descriptions of each individual process can be found in the Manufacturing Processes Reference Guide by the same authors.

Preparing a formal proposal is the first important stage in creating a book. In order to ensure that Industrial Press can evaluate the merits of your idea and arrive at the right publishing decision, we recommend that your proposal include the following elements:
A. Prospectus
The ideal prospectus includes a convincing rationale for the project, a plan for its development, and a clear focus on its targeted market. A carefully prepared prospectus also will explain why you want to undertake this project and will address the following questions:
1. The Market
What is the market for your project? Who, specifically, are the potential customers for this project? What trade organizations does this market support? Is there an academic segment to this market? At what level?
Who are the major competitors? Please cite author, title, and year published. What are their strengths and weaknesses and what advantages will your book have? Describe your proposed book. What are its key features/customer benefits? If software will accompany your project, please describe it fully. Please include the most current table of contents.
4. The Format
What is the projected length of your manuscript? What are your plans for the art program (number and kind of illustrations)? How will you prepare your illustrations? Are there any special design considerations? Whats your schedule for delivering the complete manuscript, including art?
Sample chapters are an important part of your proposal. While the prospectus and table of contents explain your plan, it is the sample chapters that demonstrate whether your books potential is likely to be realized. Please include one or two chapters with your prospectus or provide a schedule for submitting these chapters. Please include your vita, including work and teaching experience, degrees and affiliations, any prior publications and awards. Be sure to include your street address, telephone and email address. Your recommendations for reviewers, preferably drawn from your target market, or experts in the field.
Please send your proposal to our editorial director, John Carleo, at [email protected]
