New York in Pajamarama
Michaël Leblond
Illustrations by Frédérique Bertrand
Move the piece of acetate slowly across the page and watch
the images come to life as if by magic in this animated pic-
ture book like none seen before
Join the pajama-clad hero as he leaves his bedroom to see the
sights of New York at nighttime. Dodge the traffic, be daz-
zled by the lights on Broadway, and take in the heights of the
Big Apple’s dizzying skyline. The book is produced using the
very old technique of Ombro-Cinema: the lines embedded in
the design create an illusion of movement when contrasted
against the lines of the acetate.
Michaël Leblond is the founder of the graphic design studio
Ithaca. He has held graphic design workshops in partnership
with social-action groups since 2006. Long fascinated by the
processes of creating illusions of movement, he made the dis-
covery at a museum of an old Japanese animation technique
that inspired New York in Pajamarama. Frédérique Bertrand
is the illustrator of The Land of Hungry Armadillos.

Lyra and the Adventure of the Flying Fish
Peter Emina
Illustrations by Alice Ridley
An underwater adventure plot framed by a premature baby who grows into a
girl during her incubator dreams
“This is a lovely and engaging tale which will appeal to young readers but
what makes it special and original is that the authors were inspired to write
it when they saw their niece for the first time, lying in her incubator next to
her toy rabbit, struggling to be alive.” —School Librarian
Lyra and W. Rabbit were together from the very first moment. As the second mo-
ment arrived, Rabbit lay there with his head next to hers. He could feel her tiny
breaths passing along the plastic tube. He listened to the air as it tickled his big
furry ears . . .
Peacefully floating on the surface of life, Lyra is very good at ignoring everything.
But when her beloved rabbit is taken away by an unschooled whooshing jumble
of flying fish, Lyra finds herself caught up in an amazing watery adventure below
the surface of the ocean. With the help of her new friend Timothy the turtle, she
bravely vows to find W. Rabbit at all costs.

Empty Fridge
Gaëtan Dorémus
A quirky picture book that taps into strong themes in children’s lives: the love of food
and cooking, sharing, and the importance of good friends and neighbors
It seems everyone in Andrew’s building has been so busy during the day, they’ve forgotten
to buy anything for dinner. Their fridges are all empty—well almost. With only three car-
rots to eat, Andrew decides to go upstairs to ask his neighbor Nabil if he’s got anything in
his fridge. Nabil’s not doing much better: he only has two eggs and small piece of cheese.
Together, they decide to try the family on the second floor. As they ascend each floor of their
apartment building, they gather more ingredients from more neighbors until they reach the
top floor and everyone finally has enough for a meal. But now the question is what to cook?

The Selfish Giant
Oscar Wilde
Illustrations by Ritva Voutila
A magnificent new illustrated edition of Oscar Wilde’s
famous and moving story
The children always played in the Giant’s garden, but when

garden,” said the Giant, “anyone can understand that, and
I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.” Oscar Wilde’s
classic tale of forgiveness is one of the most beautiful sto-
ries in the English language. With gorgeous illustrations,
this is a book for the whole family to treasure.

of Being Earnest and The Picture of Dorian Gray. Ritva
Voutila has illustrated more than 50 children’s books, in-

A Certain Music
Celeste Walters
The story of an unbreakable bond formed by a lonely child and an eccentric musician with
bonus material on understanding Beethoven’s music, stepping into history, and fun with words
“Writing in an understated manner, Walters lets readers draw their own inferences about
the girl’s challenges as well as her name, which is revealed in the end. Occasional ink
drawings with gray washes will help readers visualize the period setting.” —Booklist
It is 1821 and a lonely child spends her days hiding in the Vienna Woods until she spies an old
man, a music maker. The man is composing a revolutionary new work, but he fears it will be ridiculed
and that people will think he’s gone mad. The child sits for hours watching and listening as he
revises and plays, and slowly she develops a deep understanding of both the music and the man.
Together they give each other the courage to face their critics and dare to be different.
Celeste Walters is the author of several works for young readers, including Deception, The Killing
of Mud-Eye, and The Last Race.

THE WITCH HUNTER CHRONICLES
Stuart Daly
The Witch Hunter Chronicles is an action-packed adventure series set during the 17th century.
This was an age of haughty duelists who drew their rapiers at the slightest provocation; of masked
highwaymen, waiting in ambush behind thickets along country byways; of Spanish galleons, laden with
treasure from the New World; of battle-scarred pirate sloops lurking in secret smugglers’ coves; of
mercenaries—dogs of war—who drifted from country to country, hiring their swords to the highest bidder;
of Barbary corsairs who roamed the Mediterranean in slave galleys; and of daring voyages into the Orient
and the dark heart of Africa. It was an age of high adventure, but above all, it was the age of the witch hunters.
Stuart Daly is a high school history teacher. The Witch Hunter Chronicles is his first series.

“A deeply unified collection, its stories linked together in complex and complementary
ways. It contains humor, lyricism, breath-catching adventure, and powerfully idiosyn-
cratic narrative voices . . . the best kind of fantasy writing.” —Australian Book Review
I ride this day upon the Worldroad, alone, except for Courage, who rides on the pommel
of my saddle fluffing his feathers. I did not dream of journeying thus as a child . . .
This is the unforgettable world of Isobelle Carmody, presented in 14 stories written over a
period of 13 years. Within it readers will find roads of paradox on which an angel might
be a torturer, or a princess might reject a prince to save a rooster. These are paths traveled
by seekers of the difficult deepest truths never found on straight roads; here a boy searches
for his true name, a group of pilgrims is led by a song on an ancient journey, and a beast
discovers hope. Enter this world and you will never again be sure where reality ends and
imagination begins, for sometimes the greatest truths can only be told through imagina-
tion. From one of Australia’s finest writers of fantasy comes a stunning collection of sto-
ries full of provocative ideas and haunting images.

Metro Winds
An engrossing collection of sensual, otherworldly stories from the author of the acclaimed
Obernewtyn Chronicles
“A delicious selection of modern short-form fantasy. Once read, you will never go back
to the wonder, strangeness, and charm-deprived husks we thinks of as fairy tales.”
—Courier Mail, Brisbane
“A collection of five short stories, each more enchanted than the last . . . Carmody’s writ-
ing is full of beautiful, carefully crafted imagery.” —Lip Magazine
In these stories, anything is possible. A young man fulfills a dying wish. A girl discovers her
destiny in the dark tunnels of the Metro. Another seeks her lost sister in a park where winter
lasts forever. A writer pursues an ending to his story. A mother works magic to summon a true
princess for her son. A lost man goes in search of his shadow. This is a world of desire and
transformation, the real and the not real, from a queen of modern fantasy.

“Sublime, with each tale landing a punch squarely between the old and the new, bewitching
and terrifying.” —Australian Bookseller & Publisher
“The writers in The Wilful Eye imbue all of their characters, including the villains, with
a deep sense of psychological realism, producing often tender, engaging, and insightful
results. Unnamed soldiers and hideous beasts are given a voice, even if that voice is at
times unsettling, and wolves are still wolves, however they disguise themselves.”
—Australian Book Review
Margo Lanagan (Tender Morsels), Rosie Borella, Isobelle Carmody, Richard Harland (World-
shaker), Margaret Mahy (The Seven Chinese Brothers), and Martine Murray (Henrietta There’s
No One Better) have taken inspiration from stories that have shaped us all, tales like “Beauty
and the Beast,” “The Steadfast Tin Soldier,” and “The Snow Queen.” This collection carries uni-
versal themes of envy and desire, deception and abandonment, courage and sacrifice. Charac-
ters are enchanted, they transgress, they yearn, they hunger, they hate, and, sometimes, they kill.
Some of the stories inhabit a traditional fairy-tale world, while others are set in the distant fu-
ture. Some are set in the present and some in an alternative present. The stories offer no pre-
scription for living or moral advice and none belong in a nursery. Open the covers and submit
to their enchantment.

Sleep Solutions
Quiet Nights for You and Your Child
Rachel Waddilove
Drawing upon her years of experience, Rachel Waddilove explores the different ways to
help young children develop good sleeping patterns
“Without doubt, the wisest book about families I have ever read.” —Daily Telegraph
on The Baby Book
“May well be seen as the most sensible book ever written on how to bring up a
baby.” —Observer on The Baby Book
Most new parents expect to have sleepless nights, but are they an inevitable part of par-
enting? In this most essential of guides, the author draws on her own 30 years of experi-
ence asking these questions: What has worked? What hasn’t? What resources are out there,
and how many are effective? Covering the years from birth to five, the book shows how to
help young children develop a good sleeping pattern and addresses common sleep-related
issues—including night terrors and sleepwalking so that healthy patterns can be restored.
Rachel Waddilove has more than 30 years experience as a maternity nurse and nanny, work-
ing with families all over the world including celebrities, politicians, and members of the
Royal Family. She is the author of The Baby Book and The Toddler Book.

LOST
“Astounding black-and-white photographs . . . the pictures alone are worth the price of admission.”
—Publishers Weekly on Lost New York
This historical series celebrates the cherished places in a city that time, progress, and fashion have swept aside.
In loving detail, it looks back at many of the things that have helped create a city’s unique identity and have
since disappeared—the streetcars, the shops, the parks, the churches, the amusement parks, even the annual
parades. In one city-centric collection, it brings together the architectural gems that failed to be preserved,
the hotels that could not be adapted, and the novelty buildings that fell to the wrecking ball.
Lost Baltimore
Paul Kelsey Williams and Greg Alexander
A celebration of the cherished parts of Baltimore that
are no longer
Organized chronologically starting with the earliest
losses and ending with the most recent, this book fea-
tures much-loved Baltimore institutions that failed to
stand the test of time, including the Sun Iron Building,
Electric Amusement Park, and the Rennert Hotel.
Alongside the city’s iconic and much-missed buildings, it
also looks at traditions that have passed, such as mar-
ble doorsteps and painted window screens, and sports
franchises that have relocated, such as the Baltimore
Colts and Baltimore Bullets. Other sites include Carroll
Hall, Baltimore & Ohio Building, News American
Building, Montebello, Riverview Amusement Park, Toll-
gates, Latrobe Block, Bromo Seltzer Factory, Calvert
Street Station, Bethlehem-Fairfield Shipyard, Fells Point
historic homes, Downtown theaters, Centennial Foun-
tain, Camp Holabird, St. Mary’s Seminary, and Hutzlers.

vation and architecture from Roger Williams and Cor-

LOST
Lost Philadelphia
Ed Mauger and Bob Skiba
A nostalgic journey back in time to visit some of the
lost treasures that the city let slip through its grasp
Organized chronologically, starting with the earliest losses
and ending with the most recent, the book features much-
loved Philadelphia institutions that failed to stand the test
of time, such as the Horn & Hardart automat or the Mar-
ket Street ferries. It highlights grand buildings erected in
the Victorian era that were too costly to be refur-
bished, and movie theaters that the age of television made
redundant. Philadelphia’s shipbuilding tradition is one of
the more recent losses with the Navy Yard closing in 1995
and the historic Cramp & Sons shipyard disappearing much
earlier in 1946. Other sites include Fairmount Water Works,
the Great Central Fair, Music Fund Hall, Graff House, Ma-
sonic Hall, Smith and Windmill Islands, Grand Depot, Starr
Garden, Lubinville Film Studios, Logan Square, Baldwin
Locomotive Works, Metropolitan Opera House, Old Post
Office, Arch Street Theatre, Betsy Ross House, Baker Bowl,
Broad Street Station, Eastern State Penitentiary, and the
Stetson Hat Company.
Ed Mauger is the founder of Philadelphia on Foot, through which he fashions unique walking tours based on his in-depth
knowledge of city history and architecture and of the streets and byways of old Philadelphia. He has appeared on Good

Shit New York
Patrick Dalton
Following up Shit London, a hilarious col-
lection of photographs depicting what shitti-
ness New Yorkers have to actually put up with
every day
Welcome to New York, one of the most vibrant
and beautiful cities in the world. It boasts some
of the planet’s most alluring and enduring at-
tractions and some of the most expensive retail
and residential square footage known to estate
agents. It is the city infamously referred to as “the
city that never sleeps.” And it’s true. It doesn’t.
Which is why, now, after all these years, it has
started to look a little tired. A little run down.
A little exhausted. In short, it is falling apart, on
its knees, and in need of a damn good bath. The
book is a hilarious collection of photographs of
the world’s most fascinating city at its worst. The
photos reveal the eccentricities, oddness, bleak-
ness, and strangeness of every nook and cranny
of the sprawling five boroughs. This is a warts-and-all walk around the world’s favorite city seen through the eyes of its locals
and Patrick Dalton—the quintessential Englishman in New York.
Patrick Dalton is the author of Rude London, Shit London, Shit London 2, and a contributor to Time Out magazine online.

Motorcycle Graphics
Outsider Art, Graphics and Illustration
Gary Inman
More than 30 artists from around the world share
their art depicting freedom, speed, and the open road
in two dimensions
Classic and vintage motorbikes are once again at the
epicenter of counterculture. After decades of being mar-
keted as a midlife crisis toy, the motorcycle and the cul-
ture that surrounds it are returning to their authentic
roots—real machines ridden by those who care about
the machine and the release from quotidian drudgery,
rather than show. In the wake of this cultural shift have
emerged many new boutique custom shops and street-
riding outfitters. This collection features a wave of vi-
brant new graphic design that has emerged worldwide
to give the movement its aesthetic stamp. It will be
hugely inspiring to anyone on the motorbike scene and
graphic designers alike.
Gary Inman is a journalist who specializes in motor-
cycle culture. He is a former columnist for GQ Italy, a
columnist for Rolling Stone’s Italian edition, a regular
contributor to leading automotive and lifestyle titles
around the world, and coeditor and copublisher of the
cult motorcycle magazine Sideburn. He has ridden from
New York to San Francisco and back, and regularly
races flat track bikes on the UK’s speedway ovals. Artists
include Will Barras (UK), Dirty Donny (San Francisco),
Leviathan (Spain), Shawn McKinney (Los Angeles),

Aliens, Cyborgs and Biomechanics
Martin de Diego
A collection of artists working in surrealist biome-

the new Gigers
H. R. Giger created the world of the 1980 Alien movie
without the benefit of a Mac, and is still a major inspi-
ration for today’s obsessive digital artists—who, with far
more powerful tools at their disposal to create their own
alien art, are pushing the boundaries of the visual. This
book features more than 50 top artists from around the
world working in the genre, where the boundaries be-
tween computer games and movies increasingly blur.

Glamour Henna
The Amazing Art of Contemporary Henna:
Fashion-Music-Bridal-Nude
Pavan Ahluwalia
A gorgeous look at a leading henna artist who has
revolutionized the art, mixing traditional inspiration
with cutting edge style
Henna and mehndi artist Pavan shares how she has rad-
ically reinvented the art, creating designs which mix the
traditions of henna with contemporary show business,
celebrity, and music. Using glitter, diamante bindis, and
colored body paint as well as henna, she has in effect
created a striking new art form much in demand on both
sides of the pond, and with the likes of Lady Gaga and
the Sugababes. This luxurious volume, packed with stun-
ningly photographed designs, will be a fount of inspi-
ration for henna clients, beauty professionals, makeup
artists, and anyone interested in new wave Indian cul-
ture. Pavan describes her techniques and discusses the
many sources, ancient and modern, which serve as her
inspiration—for example she explains how she incor-
porates designs her grandmother taught her, or ideas de-
rived from ancient saris, with elements of the latest music
and fashion.
Pavan Ahluwalia is one of the UK’s leading henna artists.
From a traditional Sikh family, Pavan is self-taught,
turned professional at 19, and now holds the Guinness
World Record as the world’s fastest henna artist. Her
work has graced the bodies of many celebrities, rock
bands, and fashion shows, as well as featuring across

Men’s File
Tracing the Roots of Style
Nick Clements
A modernist book tracing the roots of style
Not just about reporting on retro revival subcultures, this
visual collection conveys a whole movement wanting the
symmetry of modernism, an unrecognized counterculture
that has been a significant influence on design since the
death of punk in 1979. Revival is not so much about look-
ing backwards as attempting to create a new and different
future from that offered by the market, consumerism, and
mainstream aesthetics. This book is for the outsider, the in-
dividual, the man who has found he is part of the world
of “other” without trying.
Nick Clements is a fashion photographer, filmmaker, and
current editorial director of the cult Men’s File magazine.
Since 1990 Nick’s fashion images have appeared in most
significant men’s fashion magazines in the U.S., Europe, and
the UK, including Arena, Esquire, Flaunt, GQ (UK, Italy,
Spain, U.S.), L’Uomo Vogue, and L’Officiel Hommes.
Nick’s photographic language borrows heavily from sub-
cultural style, acknowledging the debt much men’s fashion
has to the symbols of refusal and resistance apparent in sub-
cultures of the 1950s and 1960s. Using fashion photogra-
phy as a method of cultural investigation, his research at
London’s Royal College of Art attempts, simultaneously,
to explore contemporary revival subcultures and their in-
fluence on current men’s fashion and fashion photography.

Ride!
From Ultra-cycling Rookie to Racing Across America
Joshua Kench
How a pretty unfit, very ordinary dude became an ultraendurance cyclist and undertook
one of the great feats of human endurance
At his brother’s wedding in 2002, 30-year-old Josh Kench sat with a cigarette in one hand and
a beer in the other and announced that he was going to do the coast-to-coast ride across New
Zealand. His pronouncement was met with derision and laughter, but he’s proved his
doubters wrong. Josh won the 2010 Lake Taupo Cycle Challenge, covering a mind-numbing
8 laps of the 160 kilometer course in 55 hours. That was only the start of it. In June 2011,
this 39-year-old plumber lined up at the start of the Race Across America—a 16-day
race stretching from California to Maryland. This is the inspiring story of how an ordinary guy
became an ultraendurance athlete and decided to take on the world.

Marathon Training
Getting to the Start Line Strong and Injury-Free
Nikalas Cook
An experienced personal trainer describes how to go from nonrunning to marathon
success in 28 weeks
Every year, thousands of people are inspired to don their running shoes and take on the
challenge of a marathon. On the road to the finish line, though, many marathon hope-
fuls fall by the wayside, struck down by injury. Plans that are too running-
intensive or that don’t prepare the body for running and ignore correct technique are
largely to blame. Nikalas Cook adopts a cross-training approach to running. He in-
corporates functional strength training, complementary activities such as cycling and
swimming, and only three focused running sessions per week into his plan to deliver
runners to the finish line completely prepared and injury-free. In 28 weeks, readers can
go from complete nonrunners, through their first 5k, 10k, half-marathon, and finally
to success in the full 26.2 miles of the marathon.
Nikalas Cook is a writer and coach who specializes in health, fitness, endurance, and
adventure sports.

Luther & His World

In this vivid account of the Reformation, readers learn about the process that led up
to Luther’s rebellion against the late medieval church and understand what drove him

Slaying the Dragons
Destroying Myths in the History of Science and Faith
Allan Chapman
In this lively and often surprising study, Chapman examines popular misunderstandings
about key events in the history of science-faith relations
For those interested in science-faith relations, this important study examines popular mis-
understandings about key events in history. It covers the major episodes such as Galileo’s
trial, the Wilberforce-Huxley debate, and the Scopes trial of 1925, but also looks further back
through the medieval period to the Classical age, revealing how these events have acquired
mythical and misleading statuses. Chapman exposes the facts that have been forgotten and
the contemporary opinions that have been supplanted by modern propaganda. Slaying the
Dragons is an important book that strips away layers of misunderstanding and misinter-
pretation.
Allan Chapman is the author of several books, including England’s Leonardo and Gods in
the Sky.

Beyond Human
Science and the Changing Face of Humanity
John Bryant
An exploration of what the most significant scientific advances of recent years mean for
us as humans
Recent scientific advances have made it possible to do the unthinkable—clone, design one’s
own babies, genetically enhance soldiers, and wipe out entire populations with a simple air-
borne chemical. Such technology means that nature no longer follows an inevitable course,
and that our decisions have unprecedented power. This book introduces many of the most
significant scientific advances of recent years, including food modification, genetics and eu-
genics, modern medical technology, and transhumanism or “improving” the species. Look-
ing at the dehumanizing effects of technology, it asks us to think about what these things
mean for us, arguing that new technology has developed so quickly to not consider all of its
ethical implications is to risk our own humanity.
John Bryant is a biologist and the coauthor of Bioethics for Scientists.

Deceived Wisdom
Why What You Thought Was Right Is Wrong
David Bradley
A skeptic’s guide to debunking popular science myths and much “received wisdom” that
is just plain wrong
Accessible, clear, and humorous, this book answers questions people have pondered over
for a lifetime, such as Why did your mother remind you to take off your coat when inside,
or you won’t “feel the benefit” when you leave? Why would someone advise that what you
need to cool down is a nice cup of tea? And must you really let red wine breathe first to
improve its taste? It also covers why urinating on a jellyfish sting does not help, why cell
phones won’t give you cancer, and why recycling aluminum cans is not a waste of time. With
clear and witty writing, this book examines the science behind many popular myths, revealing
why many “truths” we think we know, we don’t really know at all.
David Bradley has contributed to and edited several books, including The Bedside Book of
Science. He has also written for New Scientist, the Telegraph, and the Guardian.

Sacred Secrets
Freemasonry, the Bible and Christian Faith
Mike Neville
An insider’s guide to the many links between Freemasonry, the Bible, and Christianity
Masonic secrets are of great interest to a wide audience, whether Freemasons or not, but
there is no other book that offers any form of guide to the stories used in Masonic ritual
and their links to the Bible and Christianity. New Masons are directed to a serious con-
templation of the Volume of the Sacred Law, and this book will enable initiates to understand
the Biblical text. Furthermore, it is a guide to the historical and geographical setting of
the Bible for all Freemasons and will allow them to make a daily advancement in Masonic
knowledge. Much of the ritual is based on the Bible, but many younger Masons may not
have attended Sunday school, so many of the Biblical characters and stories will be un-
known to them. Without this knowledge, much of the ritual is very difficult to understand,
and this book bridges that gap. This book will also aid the clergy, theologians, and any-
one else interested in Freemasonry to see the clear links between ritual and scripture. It
names the chapters of the Bible that have the most influence on the ceremonies, and chal-
lenges the view that the ritual is Satanically inspired.
Mike Neville is a Freemason and a member of the Holy Royal Arch, Mark, Royal Ark
Mariner, Royal & Select Masters, Allied Masonic Degrees, and Red Cross of Constantine.
He has performed much ritual, including Tracing Boards and lectures in several degrees.

Sex Drive
In Pursuit of Female Desire
Dr. Bella Ellwood-Clayton
For many women an active sex life is on the bottom of their “to do” list—is women’s sex-
ual desire in the Western world at an all time low? A sexual anthropologist investigates.
Lack of libido is women’s most common sexual problem, and once in a secure relationship,
a women’s sex drive often begins to plummet. Exploring what libido is and why it is being
depleted, this book argues that women don’t want sex because they don’t feel sexy. At a
time when women’s libidos are being threatened by the wider forces of media, market-
ing, medication, and increasingly pressured lives, who can blame them? With increasing num-
bers of women with low libido being diagnosed as “sexually dysfunctional,” the race to create
a “pink Viagra” is on. This book engages such questions as Do we have unrealistic expec-
tations about our sex drive? Who defines what is normal and abnormal? And could “low
libido” in fact be the natural order of things? Provocative, authoritative, and engaging, this
book is both fascinating reading and sure to create passionate debate.

and radio, has written for many major newspapers and magazines, and made a documen-
tary with National Geographic.

The explosion was heard 20 miles away. It killed boatmen and wrecked the exotic villa of
Lawrence Alma-Tadema, the fashionable St John’s Wood artist. But what caused the 1874 Re-

something personal? And whose was the other body found in the canal? An artist’s model?
The missing King’s Cross barmaid? Or another victim of the so-called Thames murderer? As
he struggles to find the answers, Scotland Yard’s Sergeant Ernest Best straddles the conflict-

Reaper
Jon Grahame
The revenge murder Jim Reaper starts to plan becomes complicated when thousands begin
to die in a natural disaster that almost kills the world
“Dark, brutal and action packed. Just what I love to read.” —Matt Hilton, author,
Cut and Run
Lonely and embittered ex-cop Jim Reaper has nothing much to live for—until he learns that
the man who raped his 14-year-old daughter is out of prison after serving only three years.
Obsessed with vengeance, Reaper is largely indifferent to reports of what the media have
labeled SuperSARS, a virulent pandemic sweeping westward from China. It is the apocalypse
that everyone predicted but no one believed would ever happen. It wipes out 98 percent of
the world’s population as well as every vestige of government, law enforcement, and civi-
lized society. Still traumatized by the loss of their loved ones, many now simply struggle to
survive while hoping to rebuild a decent life for themselves in a world full of fear and un-
certainty; where every town and city is a hell of shadows, smoke, and distant screams; where
feral gangs simply take what they want and savagery is rife. All Jim Reaper had ever wanted
to do was take his revenge and then die. But the fates that have taken the lives of so many
others have different plans for Reaper: his destiny is to become an instrument of both sal-

The Beautiful Child
Emma Tennant
From the acclaimed author of Pemberley and Thornfield Hall comes a tale inspired by
Henry James
“The text virtually breathes Jane Austen.” —New York Times Book Review on Pemberley
The Beautiful Child is the last-known unfinished story by the great American writer, end-
ing on a Jamesian note of terror and amplified throughout by Tennant’s trademark femi-
nist, dreamlike style. A chilling account of cruelty and neglect, it suggests a terrifying real
scandal behind James’s inability to complete his story of a couple who beseech a fashion-
able artist to paint the child they never had—none other than the dipsomaniac Mr. and Mrs.
Smith, longstanding servants of James until the novel was abandoned.
Emma Tennant is best known for a postmodern approach to her fiction, which often gives
a dreamlike twist to classic stories. Her books include a sequel to Pride and Prejudice called
Pemberley and Thornfield Hall: Jane Eyre’s Hidden Story.

The Cult of Nostalgia
Bruce Bruschi
A fantastically portrait of Paris and all its charms, in the 1920s, the 1960s, and today,
the story follows a contemporary woman and her great-uncle on their parallel journeys
Carly is a 30-year-old life coach with no clue as to which direction any life should take, in-
cluding her own. Her boyfriend, Simon, is neurotic and emotionally overbearing and just
eloped to Paris with a memeber of his self-help cult called Morningside. He’s also taken
along with him Carly’s recent gift from a deceased great-uncle—an unpublished memoir of
his time in Paris during the 1920s. What do Simon and Morningside want with it? Why has
he taken it to Paris? Woven into Carly’s story are two others—that of her great-uncle as he
returns to Paris in the 1960s after an absence of nearly 40 years, and the other, of course,
is his memoir of that extraordinary period itself, spent among the famous expatriates of
the day, from the Hemingways and the Fitzgeralds to Gertrude Stein and Alice B. Toklas.

Woman Master
Mehrnaz Stars
An elegantly written tale of one Persian woman’s journey—she marries for love, and
eventually loses everything and must start again. The author says “I wanted to tell a
Persian story and I wanted Westerners to hear it the way an Iranian might hear it.”
Strong, independent, and always with an opinion of her own, Pari grew up in an envi-
ronment where women were expected to marry young and bear children, but she elopes
with a wealthy older man who already has one wife. Her husband is Master to a large
rural village community and his new wife Pari becomes the Zan-Arbab, the Woman Mas-
ter. Realizing that she is unable to have children, Pari lives vicariously through the vil-
lagers, who teach her important life lessons. Her somewhat idyllic life changes drastically
when, soon after her husband takes another wife who can bear him children, he loses
all his money and is forced to sell his villages. Pari flees to her cousin Zeeba’s house in
Tehran where she finds that the family is full of conflicts and strong personalities wait-
ing to collide. Though she is treated as a servant responsible for cooking, cleaning, and
other menial tasks, Pari is the one person Zeeba and the other women in the household
turn to in times of trouble. As time goes by Pari sees changes in the status of women in
Iranian society and the new challenges this brings to young and old alike. Throughout
the turmoil, she maintains a steady resilience and in doing so suggests that age-old cul-
tural traditions have much to offer the Iran of today.

Distractions
Continuing the adventure, Walker picks up where the last book left off with Emma end-
ing her affair with her young neighbor—only to start a tryst with an old friend and her
husband
After a steamy affair with her young neighbor, Emma Benson flees to her friend Sally’s beach
house to recharge her emotional batteries. Her marriage to David has been going through a
testing time, but now she’s determined to be the wife he would like her to be. If only it was
that easy—for how does one tame a woman who’s brimming with uninhibited sensual de-
sires, a woman for whom pleasure is the ultimate goal in life? Sally’s beach house is the per-
fect place to relax and reconnect with a secret relationship Emma had thought had ended
years before. But the arrival of David at the beach house reignites her fantasies—and offers

her tale of power, wisdom, love, and deception, in her own words
Arabian by birth, Ayesha’s natural beauty was the cause in her father’s kingdom of many

book that will appeal to all those who love nature, literature, and art. What are nests if not art
created by nature? If a nest is not art, how can we account for those exquisite, painstakingly,
constructed creations that are decorated, or woven through with feathers, or studded with ob-
jects of a particular color or sheen? This book reveals both the art and mystery found in nature
and celebrates them with lyricism, insight, and great affection. In the tradition of Longitude,
Cod, or The Cello Suites, this memoir is also a short education that encompasses celebration and theory, investigation and mem-
oir, the familiar and the revelatory—as surprising and enticing as any beautiful, intricately constructed nest.
Janine Burke is an art historian, a biographer, a novelist, and a curator. Her novel Company of Images was short-listed for both
the Age Book of the Year award and the Miles Franklin Award. She is also the author of The Sphinx on the Table.

Wearing Combovers
And 49 Other Things That the Modern Man Shouldn’t Do
Carl Walker
A guide to egregious modern male behaviors that simply must stop, such as wearing com-
edy ties and socks
Some men labor under the curious misapprehension that cycling without using one’s hands
constitutes a social achievement. Other men manage to convince themselves that a combover
could be mistaken for a lustrous body of hair. There exist men who will toss a piece of candy up
in the air on a public street, with the sole purpose of trying to catch it in their mouth. In a
moment of historical literary significance matched only by the Doomsday book and the first
edition of the King James Bible, this book finally brings together an account of the strange
and frankly unacceptable habits of modern men with the clear and obvious reasons why these
habits must, for the sake of the future of the human race, be cast aside.
Carl Walker is a psychology professor with 10 years of experience researching and publish-
ing academic work on human behavior. He is uniquely qualified to write this book on ac-
count of being the only man who considers himself a world authority on men who juggle.

A Classical Primer
Ancient Knowledge for Modern Minds
Dan Crompton
A basic but enjoyable introduction to the study of the culture of the ancient Greeks and
Romans, from the languages to literature, philosophy, art, and much more
For those who didn’t take Classics at school, or who have forgotten most of what they knew,
this primer is a look back at classical civilization—how they lived and how many aspects
of our own daily lives have been directly influenced by theirs, from roads and concrete, to
central heating, the 12-month calendar, cranes, and even pizza. It covers Greek and Latin
languages; offers Greek and Roman history in a nutshell from the Bronze Age through the
fall of the Roman empire; provides an introduction to Greek literature including The Iliad,
The Odyssey, and the Greek tragedies; and covers the basics of Latin literature. It also pro-
vides basic background on philosophy, including Socrates and Plato; ancient architecture
including the Parthenon and the Colosseum; and science and technology, including such in-
ventions as the alarm clock, the vending machine, flushing toilets, and glass. This handy
book shows that even a basic knowledge of Classics is not only essential, but also incredi-

Tamil Tigress
My Story As a Child Soldier in Sri Lanka’s Bloody Civil War
Niromi de Soyza
In 1987, 17-year-old Niromi de Soyza shocked her middle-class Sri Lankan family by joining
the Tamil Tigers. Equipped with a rifle and cyanide capsule she was one of the rebels’ first fe-
male soldiers—this is her story of her time as a guerrilla
How could it be that a well-educated, middle-class, Catholic-educated girl from a respectable
family came to be fighting with the Tamil Tigers? The Sri Lanka that Niromi de Soyza knew grow-
ing up in Jaffna included daily gun fights and a systematic campaign by an elected governement
to wipe out parts of its own population. In a fit of righteous anger and teenage idealism she joined
the Tamil Tigers to defend her rights and the lives of her friends and neighbors. Two days before
Christmas, in 1987, she found herself, at the age of 17, as part of a small platoon of militant
Tamil Tigers, most of them teenage girls, in an ambush by the Sri Lankan army. With her was
her lifelong friend, Ajanthi, also 17. Ajanthi was killed that day as they came under heavy fire.
Today Niromi lives in Sydney with her husband and children—and now she is telling her amaz-
ing story.

is almost impossible to pick. Shane relates how he endures intense physical and mental stress
brought on by rogue insurgents, mortar attacks, roadside bombs, and intense heat, doing his
best to survive while staying focused on the job. When he meets an elderly Iraqi man, known
as the Professor, their brief encounter changes his life.

After Everest
Inside the Private World of Edmund Hillary
Paul Little
A fascinating exploration of the life of mountaineer and adventurer Edmund Hillary, pen-
etrating beyond the legend to reveal a character of paradoxes
Edmund Hillary is a world icon and a towering figure among adventurers. The interest in him
and in his family’s dedication to making a contribution to the welfare of the Nepalese people
is well known. However, it is the drama of Sir Edmund’s later years that throw light into the
world of the private man: the death of his wife and daughter in an air crash, his remarriage
to the widow of an old friend, and, finally, the falling out, after his own death, of his widow
and his eldest son, Peter. All these stories of the Hillary legacy, and the many books written
about his life, are about what he did, but this book explores who Edmund Hillary was and the
many paradoxes of his character: the individualist who always worked with a team, the lonely
boy who ended up loved by millions, the man who could be distant from his own children
but is regarded as a surrogate father by thousands of Nepalese, and the left-leaning thinker
who accepted the highest order of chivalry from Queen Elizabeth II. This is the story of the
man behind the legend.

Marching to the Drums
A History of Military Drums and Drummers
John Norris
A full history of the crucial role played by drums in the history of warfare, including pre-
viously untold stories from the American Civil War and Napoleonic Wars
This is the first work to chart the rise of drums in military use and how they came to be used
on the battlefield as a means of signaling. This use was to last for almost 4,000 years when
modern warfare with communications rendered them obsolete. Even so, drummers continued
to serve in the armies of the world and performed many acts of heroism as they served as stretcher
bearers to rescue the wounded from the battlefield. From ancient China, Egypt, and the Mon-
gol hordes of Genghis Khan, the drum was used on the battlefield. The 12th-century Crusaders
helped reintroduce the drum to Europe, and during the Napoleonic Wars of the 18th and 19th
centuries, the drum was to be heard resonating across Europe. Drummers had to flog their
comrades and beat their drums on drill parade. Today they are ceremonial, but this work tells
how they had to face enemies across the battlefield with only their drum.
John Norris served for six years as a rifleman in the Grenadier Guards and is a military jour-
nalist. His other books include Artillery: A History, Mortars of World War II, and Pistols at Dawn.

Enter the world of 17th-century Japanese warfare and the warrior elite, the Samurai. This is
a collection of three major texts, published in English translation for the first time. These works
include writings on the three distinct military strata: the Samurai, the Ashigaru or foot sol-
dier, and women in war. They include guidelines, tactics, commentaries, and advice written
by Samurai of the period, as well as intricate illustrations. Narratives of actual battles and
sieges are included in the texts, such as the famous Battle of Sekigahara. This collection is an
invaluable resource that sheds new light on the world of the legendary Japanese warrior.

The Gothic King
A Biography of Henry III
John Paul Davis
The first biography in many years of Henry III
The son and successor of Bad King John, Henry III reigned for 56 years from 1216 and was
the first child king in England for 200 years. England went on to prosper during his reign and
his greatest monument is Westminster Abbey, which he made the seat of his government—
indeed, Henry III was the first English King to call a parliament. Though often overlooked by
historians, Henry III was a unique figure coming out of a chivalric yet Gothic era: a compul-
sive builder of daunting castles and epic sepulchres; a powerful, unyielding monarch who faced
down the De Montfort rebellion and waged war with Wales and France; and, much more than
his father, Henry was the king who really hammered out the terms of the Magna Carta with
the barons. John Paul Davis brings all his forensic skills and insights to the grand story of the
Gothic King in this, the only biography in print of a most remarkable monarch.
John Paul Davis is the author of Pity for the Guy and Robin Hood: The Unknown Templar.

Ask Forgiveness Not Permission
The True Story an Operation in Pakistan’s Badlands
Howard Leedham
The true account of a lone British Special Forces advisor working for the U.S. in Pakistan
On retirement from an unusual military career Howard Leedham settled in the United States
with his American wife and successfully flew executive jets—until he was recruited in 2003
by the State Department’s airwing. Despite being British, he had the unusual skills they required,
and his specific brief was to activate a fleet of antiterrorist helicopters that had been given to
the Pakistan armed forces but never properly used. This was easier said than done—he had to
win over opposition from inside the State Department, and in particular from their Islamabad
Embassy, and also dispel the suspicions of the Pakistani Armed Forces. The helicopters were
released and brought up to the high standard of mechanical and operational maintenance re-
quired. He had to get past the closed door of the appropriate Pakistani general, which he did
by offering to stand outside the general’s bathroom and outline his plans. He was given com-
mand of a team of Pathan soldiers to train in Special Forces tactics and helicopter skills—they
became an amazingly loyal team and the book describes in detail several very successful dis-
creet operations. Howard had to do all this while under great personal threat, unable to distinguish friend from foe, even among
his own troops. This book recounts in fascinating detail the successes and failures of an unusual military operation in one of
the most inhospitable and turbulent environments in the world.
Howard Leedham was the first British officer to command a U.S. Marine Corps squadron on active service.

Arnhem Lift
A German Jew in the Glider Pilot Regiment
Louis Hagen
A tale of great heroism and tragic misjudgement, by an extraordinary man
Of the 10,000 men who landed at Arnhem, 1,400 were killed over nine days, and more than
6,000—about a third of them wounded—were captured. The remarkable Louis Hagen, an “enemy
alien” who had escaped to England having been imprisoned and tortured in a Nazi concentra-
tion camp as a boy just a few years earlier, was one of the few who made it back. The narra-
tive was first published anonymously in 1945. When 45 years later at a dinner party in Germany,
Louis Hagen met Major Winrich Behr, Adjutant to Field Marshal Model at Arnhem, Louis added
Behr’s side of the story to add even more insight to the original work.
Louis Hagen (1916–2000), born into a Jewish banking family, was sent to Schloss Lichtenburg
concentration camp for writing an anti-Nazi joke on a postcard to his sister. A high-ranking
Nazi judge and friend of the family got him out and he escaped to England. He eventually be-
came a glider pilot, fighting for the British at Arnhem. He is the author of several books, in-
cluding Ein Volk, ein Reich. He went on to be a successful journalist and film producer.

The Race for Hitler’s X-Planes
Britain’s 1945 Mission to Capture Secret Luftwaffe Technology
John Christopher
An account of the race for secret Nazi aviation technology at the end of World War II
During World War II, Hitler’s engineers had pioneered an incredible array of futuristic secret
weapons, from the Me 262, the first operational jet fighter, to the deadly V2 intercontinental
ballistic missile. With the Third Reich shattered and lying in ruins, in the summer of 1945, the
Allies launched a frantic race to grab what they saw as the justifiable spoils of war. The Ameri-
cans and Russians in particular were anxious to secure not only the aircraft and the research
and production facilities, but also the key German scientists and engineers. This Nazi technol-
ogy would define the balance of power in the phony peace of the Cold War era, launching an
arms race that shaped the modern world for decades to come. Using previously unpublished
secret Air Ministry reports, and offering comprehensive photographs of the aircraft, research,
and manufacturing facilities, this book tells the untold story of the British mission to Germany.
John Christopher is an aviation writer and a professional balloon pilot. His books include The
Apollo Story and Transatlantic Airships.

D-Day Diary
Life on the Front Line in the Second World War
Carol Harris
Eyewitness accounts of the experiences of those who participated in D-Day, including sailors,
soldiers, airmen, and civilians from both sides
Historian Carol Harris collects together remarkable tales of bravery, survival, and sacrifice from
what was one of the war’s most dramatic and pivotal episodes, and presents them arranged as
a chronological narrative. June 6, 1944 is one of the most memorable dates of World War II. It
marked the beginning of the end of the conflict as Allied forces invaded Normandy and fought
their way into Nazi-occupied Europe. Operation Overlord, as the invasion was codenamed, was
an incredible feat that proved to be a turning point that would eventually result in the defeat of
Nazi Germany. Around 150,000 soldiers landed on the beaches of Normandy on the first day
in the largest amphibious operation in history, and within a month more than 1 million men had
been put ashore. As memory becomes history, firsthand accounts of this incredible moment be-
come more and more precious.
Carol Harris is a writer and journalist who has written extensively on World War II and the 1930s
and 1940s. She is the author of Blitz Diary.

Maiwand 1880
Edmund Yorke
A legendary victory of Afghan forces over the British Army
The battle of Maiwand was one of the most serious defeats of the British Army during the Great
Game and one of the only times during the 19th century that an Asian force defeated a Western
power. The battle commenced on July 27, 1880, as Afghan forces moved towards the Maiwand Pass
in Afghanistan in attempt to cut British communications between Kabul and Kandahar. In a disas-
ter reminiscent of Isandlwana the previous year, the British underestimated the Afghan forces and
ignored key intelligence, thus being forced to attack the Afghan forces at the village of Maiwand,
with nearly 3,000 British troops to 8,500 to 15,000 Afghan warriors. British forces far outstripped
the Afghans in firepower and were confident of a swift victory, yet Khan’s command skills and tac-
tical flexibility led him to deploy his troops in such a way that their swords and spears were able
to overcome the British rifles. The battle taught the British that their military objectives in Afghanistan
were difficult and costly to achieve, the defeat resounded throughout Victorian England.
Edmund Yorke is the author of Battle Story: Isandlwana and Battle Story: Rorke’s Drift.

Verdun 1916
Chris McNab
The tale of one of the bloodiest engagements of World War I
The Battle of Verdun resulted in 698,000 deaths, 70,000 for each of the 10 months of battle. The
French Army in the area were decimated and it is often most tragically remembered as the battle
in which the French were “bled white.” The fortress town of Verdun had stood against many at-
tacks throughout history, but had been worn down by relentless German bombing during 1915
and 1916. However, it was a potent symbol of French resistance that the French Army was loathe
to relinquish easily, and it was partly for this reason that the German Commander von Falken-
hayn choose to launch a major offensive here. His attack commenced on February 21, with the
Germans using shock troops and flamethrowers to clear the French trenches. The French contin-
ued to fight valiantly despite heavy losses and eventually rolled back German forces from the city.
In the end it was a battle that saw much loss of life for little gain on either side.
Chris McNab is a freelance writer and historian whose other books include The Machine Gun
Story, The World War I Story, and The World War II Story.

Kursk 1943
Mark Healy
A clear, concise account of those dramatic days in 1943
In July 1943, Hitler launched Operation Zitadelle, the last German offensive on the Eastern Front.
It was an attempt to shorten the German lines by eliminating the Kursk salient—created after their
defeat at Stalingrad—and was designed to result in the encirclement of the Red Army. In reality
the German tanks came up against impenetrable Russian defenses: minefields, artillery, and anti-
tank emplacements, spread through lines 250km deep and manned by Russian troops whose ac-
tions often verged on the suicidal. The greatest tank battle in history, Kursk assured the Nazis’
defeat and was “the swan song of the German tank arm.” Involving more than 9,000 tanks, 5,000
aircraft, 35,000 guns and mortars, and 2.7 million troops (of whom 230,000 became casualties),
the Battle of Kursk was a conflict whose scale and barbarity eclipsed all other clashes in Europe.
Mark Healy is the author of The Tiger Tank Story and Zitadelle: The German Offensive Against
the Kursk Salient 4-17 July 1943.

Sunflowers and Snipers
Saving Children in the Balkan War
Sally Becker
Credited with saving 300 lives through evacuation and many more through medical aid
during her time in the Balkans, Sally Becker’s story is both uplifting and a warning of
the true nature and price of war
“Your vocation has inspired, and continues to inspire, many people in search of a bet-
ter and fairer world.” —President Rexhep Meidani, President of Albania 1997–2002
In May 1993, Sally Becker went to Bosnia to help victims of war, delivering medical aid
and evacuating wounded children from the besieged city of Mostar. She was dubbed the
“Angel of Mostar,” and was hailed for her efforts to save children from all sides. When Milo-
sevic ordered his troops into Kosovo her missions continued, this time on foot across the
mountains, to bring sick and injured children and their mothers to safety. While doing so
she was captured by Serb paramilitaries and sent to prison, but neither this nor being shot
by masked gunmen could make her abandon her task. This book reveals not only the suf-
fering of the ordinary people and the bravery of those who helped them, but also the sys-
tematic inertia and ineptitude of government institutions and the often languid reactions
of the United Nations.
Sally Becker is an author and former leader of Operation Angel, a British charity in Kosovo.
Her work rescuing victims of war has been recognized with many awards and she has been
featured in Good Housekeeping and the Washington Post. She is a goodwill ambassador
for Children of Peace.

Australians
Eureka to the Diggers
Thomas Keneally
The second volume of bestselling author Thomas Keneally’s unique trilogy of Australian
history in which people are always center stage
“A beautiful and profound piece of writing, one that has importance for us all.” —Age
“This bold book, with its lucid prose and vivid illustrations, will be discussed for
years to come.” —Australian Book Review
Across Australia, early Europeans commented again and again that the land looked like
a park, with extensive grassy patches and pathways, open woodlands, and abundant wildlife.
Bill Gammage has discovered this was because Aboriginal people managed the land in a
far more systematic and scientific fashion than most people have ever realized. For more
than a decade, he has examined written and visual records of the Australian landscape.
He has uncovered an extraordinarily complex system of land management using fire, the
life cycles of native plants, and the natural flow of water to ensure plentiful wildlife and
plant foods throughout the year. Aboriginal people spent far less time and effort than Eu-
ropeans in securing food and shelter, and this book reveals how. Once Aboriginal people
were no longer able to tend their country, it became overgrown and vulnerable to the hugely damaging bushfires Australians
now experience. With details of land-management strategies from around Australia, this book rewrites the history of the con-
tinent, with huge implications for today.
Bill Gammage is a historian and the author of the The Broken Years: Australian Soldiers in the Great War and Sky Travellers.

Circle Line
Around London in a Small Boat
Steffan Meyric Hughes
Join the editor of Classic Boat magazine as he sets sail around London, glides through
historical monuments, and unearths long-forgotten secrets from beneath the waterway
“Ellie Bennett is funny, she can talk the rear wheel off a Dawes three-speed and she
loves a decent pint. I’d tag along with her any day.” —Oz Clarke, author, Oz Clarke’s
Pocket Wine Guide
“Great fun and surprisingly informative.” —Mark Beaumont, author, The Man Who
Cycled the World
“One more wouldn’t hurt,” said Mick. I looked at him doubtfully. “I’m not sure. It’s gone
three o’clock already. What time does it get dark in Cornwall at this time of year?” “Not
for ages,” said Mick, waving his hand dismissively. “One more and then we’ll get on.” He
headed back to the bar with our empty beer glasses.
As Ellie’s 50th birthday approaches and her ambitions of a steady income, a successful ca-
reer, and an ascent of Everest seem as far away as ever, she begins to doubt she’s capable
of achieving anything at all. So when her best friend Mick suggests a grueling cycle ride
from Land’s End to John O’Groats, she takes up the challenge. They opt for the scenic route,
which takes them along cycle paths, towpaths, and the back roads and byways of Britain.
Unable to resist sampling local beers in the pubs they pass along the way, the pints start to
stack up faster than the miles they’re putting under their tires, and Ellie wonders if they’ll
ever make it to the finishing line.
Ellie Bennett is a writer and a cyclist.
