Springsteen on Springsteen
Interviews, Speeches, and Encounters
Jeff Burger
• Co-op available
• Advertising in American Songwriter and Blurt magazines
• Part of the Musicians in Their Own Words series
Offering fans an extensive look at the artist’s own words throughout
the past four decades, Springsteen on Springsteen brings together
Q & A–formatted articles, speeches, and features that incorporate
significant interview material. No one is better qualified to talk about
Springsteen than the man himself, and he’s often as articulate and
provocative in interviews and speeches as he is emotive onstage and
in recordings. While many rock artists seem to suffer through inter-
views, Springsteen has welcomed them as an opportunity to speak
openly, thoughtfully, and in great detail about his music and life. This
volume starts with his humble beginnings in 1973 as a struggling
artist and follows him up to the present, as Springsteen has achieved
almost unimaginable wealth and worldwide fame. Included are fea-
ture interviews with well-known media figures, including Charlie
Rose, Ted Koppel, Brian Williams, Nick Hornby, and Ed Norton.
Fans will also discover hidden gems from small and international
outlets, in addition to radio and TV interviews that have not previ-
ously appeared in print. This is a must have for any Springsteen fan.
Jeff Burger is the author of published articles in more than 75
magazines and newspapers, including Barron’s, Family Circle,
Gentlemen’s Quarterly, Golfweek, High Fidelity, the Los Angeles

Peter Rainer

(Sundance Film Festival); and Toronto
From American Beauty (overrated) to The Night of the Hunter (mas-
terpiece), this collection of Peter Rainer’s film criticism spans the
course of his illustrious 30-year career, which dates back to the early
1980s. It is drawn from a wide range of publications, including
the Christian Science Monitor, the Los Angeles Herald Examiner,
Los Angeles magazine, the Los Angeles Times, New Times Los
Angeles, and New York magazine, and is arranged thematically with
chapters such as Overrated, Underseen; Some Masterpieces;
Documentaries; Issues (Mostly Hot Button); Comedies—Intentional
and Unintentional; and Literary and Theatrical Adaptations. Rainer
covers films both well known and obscure and writes in depth about
many film auteurs—Stanley Kubrick, Alfred Hitchcock, Steven
Spielberg, the Coen Brothers, Mike Leigh—and New Generation
icons, such as Sofia Coppola and Paul Thomas Anderson. The careers
of actors ranging from Marlon Brando and Jessica Lange to Robert
DeNiro are also given an extensive examination. No film buff’s col-
lection is complete without this comprehensive compilation that
showcases the best work from a master contemporary film critic.

Hoffman now, or Robert De Niro, my responses are much
more complicated. So many of the actors who meant so
much to my college generation have nestled into comfy,
spoofy character roles. It’s tempting to see this as an erasure
of our pasts, a betrayal. Why should this be? It is because of
the extraordinary, spooky intimacy of film itself. If you care
enough about movies, the trajectory of, say, an actor’s career,
or a director’s, inevitably becomes a part of one’s own auto-

rewritten all the time, some old timers have held up quite
well indeed, and, like any other self-respecting Lothario,
this critic is always on the prowl for fresh ecstasies.

The way we treat excrement is a choice that feeds certain species and steals from others,
destroys certain ecosystems and builds up others. Why has shit become such a public health
and environmental problem, when it would seem to be such a smorgasbord of ecological
opportunities? Unless we change how we think about shit, we are doomed to forever live in it.
Or perhaps, more accurately, we already do live in it, and always will, and unless we change
how we think about it, we will continue to create very unfortunate problems for ourselves.
This book is about rectifying (no pun intended) our ignorance, and achieving that wisdom of
discernment. . . . Despite our journey from the inchoate soups of the early universe to the
highest achievements of modern civilization, we are still, deep inside, animals. Whatever our
station in life, rich or poor, powerful or downtrodden, priest or anarchist, man-god or ape-
man, we still have to urge the passage of materials through our bowels. If we can understand
this substance that emerges from us, from all animals, as an ecological unifying principle,
which goes back to our evolutionary origins and the roots of our belonging, then we can deal
with all the visible shit that surrounds us.
Read on. Know shit.

Robinson Crusoe
on Zombie Island
Daniel Defoe and Ivan Fanti
Inspired by the original literary classic, this horror mash-up tells the
story of Robinson Crusoe and his 28-year struggle to survive on an
island beset by ravenous zombies. Crusoe is forced to improvise in the
wake of total isolation and terror. His only hope may be Friday, a
native cannibal woman, as he is caught between the warring factions
of cannibals and zombies. Told through the pages of Robinson
Crusoe’s diary, this book offers a satisfying combination of serious
and silly as readers find just how badly things can go for this all-
time favorite once the living dead are added to the mix.
Daniel Defoe’s (1660–1731) other works include A Journal of the
Plague Year and Moll Flanders. Ivan Fanti is an antiquarian book
dealer. He lives in Flatbush, New York.

Excerpt:
When I waked it was broad day, the weather clear, and the storm abated, so that the sea did not rage and swell as before, and the dead
crewmen were gone into the hill country. But that which surprised me most was, that the ship was lifted off in the night from the sand
where she lay by the swelling of the tide, and was driven up almost as far as the rock which I at first mentioned, where I had been so
bruised by the wave dashing me against it. This being within about a mile from the shore where I was, and the ship seeming to stand
upright still, I wished myself on board, that at least I might save some necessary things for my use, but the dead men standing on deck
held me back though they use to be my companions.
I thought it not grotesque that the men still cling to the dead ship. We had sailed and lived in honest company together and had taken
to our final voyage in an attempt to escape the plague that had overtaken the land. Yes I knew them all by their Christian names, but
today they were no longer my companions but deadly predators who only saw me as game.
When I came down from my apartment in the tree, I looked about me again to all compass points. The first thing I see is a boat, which
lay, as the wind and the sea had tossed her up, upon the land, about two miles on my right hand. I walked as far as I could upon the
shore to have got to her; but found a neck or inlet of water between me and the boat which was about half a mile broad; so I came
back for the present, being more intent upon getting at the ship, where I hoped to find something for my present subsistence. I had
thought of an artifice to get the dead men off the ship.
It was a dangerous gambit, but I had to have the provisions upon the ship to survive. Inside the boat I found what I needed: the oars
and a rope of length enough for my purposes. The boat was too heavy for one man to push and I had to dig a narrow water trough
with my hands to float it into the sea. With some difficultly I rowed the boat out to the ship. The dead men on deck grew agitated
when they sighted me and massed on the forecastle. I rowed to a position under the bowsprit and began tossing a coconut affixed to
my rope up in the air to place the rope upon the bowsprit. After a number of tries I had the rope hanging from the bowsprit and hoist-
ed myself upwards.
Upon seeing my bustling the dead men clamored and drew closer to the bow. At last one attempted to walk along the bowsprit to get
at me. His unsteady gait undid him as he lost his footing and plummeted into the sea. I watched him sink into the depths. It was true:
dead men cannot swim.

Deadwood meets Cthulhu in this wild and profane Western romp fea-
turing zombies, werewolves, evil spirits, and one pissed off gun-sling-
ing preacher. The Wild West has never seen the likes of Reverend
Jebediah Mercer, a hard man wielding a burning Bible in the battle
between God and the Devil—an endless struggle he’s not sure he cares
who wins. All five of Mercer’s adventures are collected in this blas-
phemous volume laced with fast-paced action, non-stop humor, and
delectable creepiness. In Dead in the West, a vengeful shaman curses
the town by conjuring a seemingly unstoppable army of the undead,
while in the short story the “Deadman’s Road,” an ill-advised shortcut
leads to a bee’s nest of terror. In “The Crawling Sky,” a man stands
condemned not for the murder of his wife, but for raising the
Lovecraftian horror that killed her. A visit to “The Gentleman’s
Hotel” reveals why a woman is attacked by werewolves and left for
dead in a ghost town, and lurking in “The Dark Down There” a min-
ing camp faces off with a horde of cannibalistic fiends. These super-
natural tales of the old West that never was will have readers cheering
for the good guys—if they can figure out who the good guys are.

“Hobbs provides convincing characterizations and a satisfying
conclusion. Recommended.” —Library Journal on The Broadcast
“I’d encourage English and social studies teachers to think about
using it in the classroom, perhaps for a lesson on H. G. Wells, or
daily life during the Great Depression.” —School Library Journal
on The Broadcast
“Newcomer Hobbs works hard not to oversell the drama, focusing
on the tensions within the group. Intriguing character study of dif-
ferent personalities under pressure. Tuazon’s art adds to the omi-

Hoping to secure a future for his three children, an aging Alaskan
crime boss looks to retire and divide his empire among his heirs.
But when his idealistic son refuses the inheritance, the old man dis-
owns him. This proves to be a fatal mistake, as his cold-blooded
daughters use their new-found power and influence against him. An
epic tale of betrayal and loss, this engrossing graphic novel is a mix
of King Lear and The Godfather in the dramatic setting of Alaska.
Eric Hobbs is the author of the graphic novels Awakenings, The
Broadcast, and The Librarian. He lives in Kokomo, Indiana. Noel
Tuazon is the illustrator of the graphic novels The Broadcast, Elk’s
Run, and Tumor. He lives in Toronto.

A Mystic Garden
Working with Soil, Attending to Soul
Gunilla Norris
“Norris cycles through the four seasons of a gardener’s heart. Norris . . .
writes lyrically about dormancy and transformation, soil and nourish-
ment, roots and blossoms . . . Norris’s short reflections are balanced by
quiet and meditative poetry on facing pages, inviting deeper rumination
about how God can be discovered in the act of gardening.”

• New in paper; also available in cloth (9781933346014)
This lyrical primer on the spirituality of gardening reflects on the rela-
tionship between a gardener and his or her garden. Meditating upon
how interaction with the earth opens the heart, schools the mind,
engages the body, and embraces the soul in a world of increasing
detachment from the natural realm, this book affirms a garden as a
soulful space where people can take root and experience the changing
seasons and the enduring cycle of renewal. Filled with the joy of living,
this enchanting spiritual guide will speak to those who yearn to find the
holy in the place they call home.

THE GOLDEN SUFI CENTER JULY
Excerpt:
This book is a collection of responses to the call of the earth. It is
not offered as a solution to a problem because the world is not a
problem; it is a living being in distress. The signs of global imbal-
ance, the tsunamis, the destruction of the coral reefs, are not just
physical symptoms. As Thich Nhat Hanh writes, these are “bells
of mindfulness,” calling us to be attentive, to wake up and listen.
The earth needs our attention. It needs us to remember what is
sacred. The voices collected in this book sound different notes in
response to that call, offer different ways of being attentive, of
remembering what is sacred. Each in our own way, we need to
return to our ancient heritage as guardians of the earth, so that
we may once again be present here, holding the earth with our
hearts and souls as well as in our minds and hands.

Essays Historical, Literary, Sporting, and Elegaic
George Weigel
“George Weigel’s range and intelligence is wonderful, full of
urgency, romance, and wickedly pungent wit. Read and enjoy.”
—R. R. Reno, editor, First Things
“Weigel is one of the great writers of our time, a master of the essay.
With sharp and elegant prose, he plumbs the profundities of subjects
as diverse as baseball and Vatican II, and he takes the measure of
some of the great men of the age. These essays are a joy to read, and
they enrich both mind and heart.” —Mark Henrie,
chief academic officer, Intercollegiate Studies Institute
“If Titian could handle a brush and Haydn had an ear for music,
then one corollary is that Weigel knows how to write. These essays
are of historical importance and someday the same thing will be said
of their author.” —Rev. George Rutler,

A series of reflections by a master essayist and scholar, these pieces
by prominent Catholic commentator George Weigel examine the
conflict between secular America and the Catholic faith. This thought-
provoking collection provides insight on the origins of today’s contro-

as the Second Vatican Council; the work of John Courtney Murray;
where the 60s went wrong; Evelyn Waugh; baseball; and the careers

The Life and Spiritual Legacy of Bruno Lanteri
Timothy M. Gallagher, OMV

• Advertising in America, Choice, First Things, National Catholic Register,

Bestselling author Timothy M. Gallagher, OMV, assembles a
remarkable biography of Father Bruno Lanteri, who while living
within a context of exciting historical significance—with the French
Revolution, the rise and fall of Napoleon, and the Bourbon
Restoration reshaping France all around him—overcame great odds
to become the foremost spiritual leader of the age, ultimately found-
ing the Oblates of the Virgin Mary. Drawn from Lanteri’s own jour-
nals, letters, and correspondence, Gallagher offers a detailed
spiritual portrait of a man once limited by his own impatience and
lack of charity, who evolved into a man of fierce spiritual courage,
religious reformer, defender of the Pope against Napoleon’s com-
mand, and a symbol of perseverance who coined the term “begin
again”—the official motto of the Oblates. Complemented by a time-
line of historical events, photographs, and maps, Gallagher’s richly
researched volume brings to light the ministry and legacy of a
remarkable leader as never before.
Timothy M. Gallagher, OMV, is considered to be one of the greatest
interpreters of the spirituality of Ignatius of Loyola. He is a popular
retreat leader, an Ignatius scholar, and a lecturer. He is the author of
several books, including The Discernment of Spirits: The Ignatian
Rule for Everyday Life, The Examen Prayer, An Ignatian

intermediate to experienced embroiderers and quilters
how to create beautiful landscape quilts. First listing the
materials are needed, the guide then goes through the
design process, from taking reference photographs of land-

choosing fabrics and thread to create the scene. Simple
dyeing methods are explained, as are ways to transfer
designs on to fabric, create a quilt, then layer fabrics to
create the various parts of a picture. Free machine embroi-

Excerpt:
Close to 17,000 people—some covered in jewels, some in jeans—were out of their seats, standing and cheering as Mike Tyson and
Evander Holyfield traded punches in the center of a boxing ring. For nine intense rounds, Holyfield, a huge underdog despite being a
former heavyweight champion, had more than held his own against the heavily favored Tyson, who was defending his WBA heavy-
weight championship. Tyson thought Holyfield would be easy work, but he was proving to be exactly what his nickname suggested,
“The Real Deal.”
The harder Tyson punched, the harder Holyfield punched back. That’s why the crowd was standing. The roars that filled the area were
deafening.
At this point in his life, Tyson had already earned a fortune, lost a fortune, and was now in the process of doing it all over again with
little concern about who he faced in the ring. Holyfield was supposed to be another quick payday, a means to collect more cash to
spend on houses, cars, women, and jewels. “I’m going to make $30 million Saturday night and sign for another $30 million on
Monday,” Tyson had boasted during the press conference days before the fight.
The first fight between Evander Holyfield and Mike Tyson had been years in the making. It had been six years since their first fight
was canceled and 12 years since they both turned pro. Tyson was originally a 25:1 favorite when the fight was announced, but only a
6:1 favorite when the first bell rang. Holyfield, a two-time heavyweight champion, was viewed as washed up after three wars with
Riddick Bowe and a lackluster showing against the former cruiserweight champion Bobby Czyz. Holyfield was supposed to be easy
work for Tyson.
But instead of dominating Holyfield as many thought, Tyson was getting battered by the underdog. By the end of the ninth round,
Tyson has a cut over his left eye and his body and ego were being badly bruised by the determined Holyfield, who was expertly execut-
ing a simple game plan. “When he hits me, I’m going to hit him back,” Holyfield had said.

Animal
George “The Animal” Steele and Jim Evans
Foreword by Cowboy Bill Watts
• Co-op available
A stand-out character in an entertainment industry where per-
sona is everything, George “The Animal” Steele shares how he
balanced his real life as Jim Myers, a highly respected high
school teacher and coach, with the green tongued, hairy backed,
turnbuckle eating wrestling icon he was in the ring. The memoir
delves into the golden era of wrestling in the 1970s and 1980s
and his entry into the World Wrestling Federation where he
earned a spot in professional wrestling history despite only
speaking in animal-like grunts. In reality, the educated man that
overcame his struggles with dyslexia and Crohn’s Disease was a
father and an inspiration to many of his students and players,
and the dichotomous personalities that marked this much-loved
man’s life are explored in his own words. The book is filled with
nostalgic and humorous anecdotes about the whirlwind life of
wrestling alongside such notables as Hulk Hogan and Bruno
Sammartino, both in and out of the ring.
George “The Animal” Steele is Jim Myers, a retired professional
wrestler, high school teacher, and high school football and

Growing up with My Grandfather, Ty Cobb
Herschel Cobb
• $20,000 marketing budget; co-op available
Herschel Cobb’s moving account of his relationship with his leg-
endary grandfather reveals a side of Ty Cobb that few people ever
saw, that of loving nurturer. A baseball icon and arguably the best
player who ever lived, Ty Cobb’s infamously cold, competitive nature
allowed him to excel on the ball field but undermined his relation-
ship with his children. Devastated by the untimely death of two of
his sons, Cobb relished the opportunity to reconnect the broken
family ties when young Herschel and his siblings visited him during
the summers. In the pages of this book, Herschel, whose cruel,
abusive father and adulterous, alcoholic mother filled his childhood
with turmoil, recounts how his grandfather provided the stability,
love and guidance that Herschel desperately needed. Beautifully
written and insightful, this memoir describes the healing bond
between Cobb and his grandchildren, and constructs a wholly
different legacy for the notoriously tough Cobb as gentle and
affectionate “Granddaddy.”
Herschel Cobb is the grandson of Ty Cobb. He lives in Menlo
Park, California.

There we sat at the table in the kitchen. Dull light, looking at the box of
Ritz, glancing at each other, munching away. I liked it. It was great. I was
with my Granddad, alone. Eating Ritz crackers, late at night. I didn’t want it
to end, so I kept eating crackers and sipping milk. Then he stood up and
went to the sink and got a glass of water and I saw his legs, again.
“Granddaddy, your legs, what happened to your legs?” My voice was
almost silent. I wanted to ask, but hesitant to pry, but almost shocked at
how much they must hurt. Nonetheless, I wanted to know what happened
to him.
“When I first started, you know, broke into the majors, I was pretty fast. I
figured when I got to first base, the base path to second and third belonged
to me. That’s the rule. I liked to steal second, and third. It really rattled the
pitcher and his infield. And, I was pretty good at it. You know, I told you
about the sliding pit in my back yard. I started practicing before I was fif-
teen. So I stole as often as I could.”
He sipped his water. “I guess, at first, they figured I was lucky, but my hook
slide worked nearly every time. In my second year, I started stealing again,
and as often as I could. They had to try and stop me, so they used their
spikes on me. They wanted to scare me.”

Coach Wooden
On Baseball, Heroes, and Life
Gary Adams
Foreword by Eric Karros
• Co-op available
From the legendary basketball coach’s life lessons and “pyramid of
success” to musings on his favorite sport, this engaging account
chronicles the friendship between a pair of former University of
California–Los Angeles (UCLA) head coaches, basketball coach
John Wooden and baseball coach Gary Adams. For nearly a decade
the two celebrated coaches shared an office and developed a close
friendship that lasted 35 years until Wooden’s passing and Adams’
heartwarming narrative details discussions they shared about
heroes, history, life, and their mutual favorite pastime—baseball.
The book also reflects on Wooden’s core philosophies and the guid-
ing principles behind his numerous basketball successes, including
his election into two halls of fame as a player and a coach, winning
10 National College Athletic Association (NCAA) National
Championships in a 12-year period, and being named NCAA
College Basketball Coach of the Year six times. Recollections from
Major League Baseball stars Eric Karros, David Roberts, and Chase
Utley are also included, along with quotes from other athletes and
associates of UCLA.
Gary Adams was the head coach of the University of California–Los
Angeles (UCLA) baseball team for 30 years. He is the school’s all-
time winningest baseball coach and led the team to conference titles
and five second-place finishes. He lives in Bear Valley Springs,

Core Four
The Heart and Soul of the Yankees Dynasty
Phil Pepe
• Co-op available
• Author’s previous books sold more than 100,000 copies
Tracing the careers of four instrumental players who turned around the
Yankees ball club, this book shares behind-the-scenes stories from their
early days together in the minors through the 2012 season, and follows
them on their majestic ride to the top of the baseball world. At a time
when the New York Yankees were in free fall, having failed to win a
World Series in 17 years and had not played in one in 14 years—the
Bronx Bombers’ longest drought since before the days of Babe Ruth—
along came four young players whose powerful impact returned the
franchise to its former glory. They were a diverse group from different
parts of the globe: Mariano Rivera, a right-handed pitcher from
Panama, who was destined to become the all-time record holder in
saves and baseball’s greatest closer; Derek Jeter, a shortstop raised in
Kalamazoo, Michigan, who would become the first Yankee to accumu-
late 3,000 hits; Jorge Posada, an infielder-turned-catcher from Puerto
Rico, who would hit more home runs than any Yankees catcher except
the legendary Hall of Famer Yogi Berra; and Andy Pettitte, a left-
handed pitcher born in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who would win more
postseason games than any player in baseball history. Together they
formed the “Core Four,” and would go on to play as teammates for
13 seasons during which time they would help the Yankees advance to
the postseason 12 times, win the American League pennant seven
times, and take home five World Series trophies. This book follows
these phenoms from the minor leagues to the present, detailing their significant contributions to a winning major league franchise.
Phil Pepe is the author of more than 50 books on sports, including Few and Chosen Yankees: Defining Yankee Greatness Across the
Eras, The Yankees: An Authorized History of the New York Yankees, as well as a biography of Yogi Berra, and collaborations with
New York Yankee legends Mickey Mantle, Billy Martin, and Whitey Ford. He is a former Yankees beat writer for the New York Daily
News and a past president of the Baseball Writers Association of America. He lives in Englewood, New Jersey.

miles per hour. I don’t think anybody could look at him back then and project that he
was going to be a No. 1 or a guy that would go out and have the success he’s had, espe-
cially in the postseason.”
Jorge Posada started and ended the season in Columbus, batting .240 with 11 homers
and 48 RBI in 92 games, and he would miss almost half the season with a serious, career-
threatening injury.
“The first time I saw Posada [in 1992] he was playing for Greensboro and he was the
designated hitter,” Merrill recalled. “When I asked about him, I was told that he was a
second baseman but they were in the process of converting him to a catcher. And we all
know how that ended up. Actually, Posada probably could have made it as a second base-
man, but becoming a catcher was probably the best thing that happened to him. He ran
well enough to play the infield and he had very good speed for a catcher until he got that
ugly, ugly broken leg.”

The Willie Stargell Story
Richard “Pete” Peterson
• Co-op available
• 2012 marks the 25th anniversary of Willie Stargell’s induction into the
Major League Baseball Hall of Fame and the U.S. Post Office announced
that he will be one of four baseball legends featured on a set of postage
stamps. There have been more than 350,000 pre-orders placed for the
Stargell stamp.
A touching biography of the beloved Pittsburgh Pirate Willie “Pops”
Stargell, this life story documents the 21-year, Hall of Fame career
of one of the most celebrated and revered players in the history of
Major League Baseball. Beginning with his difficult childhood and
revealing his encounters with fierce racial hostility while playing minor
league ball in the south, this book goes on to show how Stargell
became one of the most feared hitters in baseball, a perennial All Star
and MVP candidate, and World Series hero. More than a slugging
star, Stargell—a clubhouse leader who was revered for his bursting
personality and joie de vivre—earned the affectionate nickname
“Pops” during the 1979 season when he began handing out stars to
teammates following a good play or game. The stars soon became a
symbol of the unity on the Pirates team that went on to win the World
Series. This biography also details his life following his playing days:
Stargell’s coaching career, his struggles with obesity and diabetes, and
his lasting legacy that remains relevant to this day. This telling of a
dearly loved man with a larger-than-life personality is a must read for
any fan of baseball.

Stargell at the left-field entrance to PNC Park. When Nellie Briles, Stargell’s
teammate on the 1971 World Series championship team, and Chuck Tanner,
manager of the 1979 World Series champions, unveiled the statue, those in
attendance saw in bronze and larger than life what had struck fear in National
League pitchers for nearly two decades: a powerful and coiled Stargell, bat
drawn back, waiting defiantly for the pitcher to deliver the baseball.
Sprinkled on the statue’s circular flat base, as if they had fallen from the statue,
were images of “Stargell’s stars,” those embroidered gold stars that “Pops” had
passed out to his teammates to wear on their baseball caps when they had done
something to help the team win a game. The base was encircled by an engraved
quotation of Stargell’s first impression of Pittsburgh when he was called up by
the Pirates in late 1962: “Last night, coming in from the airport, we came
through the tunnel and the city opened up its arms and I felt at home.”
Once the statue was unveiled, Chuck Tanner stepped forward, reached up, and
rubbed his hand over Stargell’s batting grip. Pointing at the way the little finger
of the statue’s lower hand overlapped the knob of the bat, he said, “That’s
incredible. That’s how he held the bat right there.” Moved almost to tears,
Tanner told those at the ceremony, “Time goes so fast . . . Why won’t time
stand still so we can still watch Willie play?”

Preface
In 1928, the Belgian artist René Magritte made a small painting of a pipe and
underneath wrote “Ceçi n’est pas une pipe” (“This is not a pipe”). He called
the painting, The Treachery of Images, making clear that what we see is only
part of what we get. A painting of a pipe is not a pipe; it’s a painting. More to
the point, art leads us beyond ordinary perceptions to extraordinary ways of
seeing, and being. Art holds mystery, and mysteries are not easily parsed but
force us to think about life beyond our limited experience, and to consider
possibilities. For some of us, this comes with the desire to make art.
Who knows where such a desire comes from? Perhaps we have a special gift

There’s magic in seeing something emerge from our hand, however simple. We
simply want to engage in this magic.

God is being revealed to both of you—but on God’s time, not yours. You do
not get to decide what makes sense, and whether something has meaning or
not. You get to pay attention. You get to feel God in your blood. That’s all.”
“God does not feel all that great,” said Sam. “He feels like . . . the flu.”
It was the priest’s turn to snort. “God is more terrible than anything you
could imagine, Sam.”
“That’s your wisdom?” Timothy’s voice was almost hysterical. His eyes were
stark, haunted—the eyes of a fugitive. “That’s your uplifting speech?”
“‘Yet in my flesh I shall see God,’” said the priest. He paused and let the
words hang in the air. “Only a fool would find that uplifting. If God is truly
in your veins, gentlemen—changing your skin, changing your bones—there
won’t be anything left of you when it’s over. Anything else is a toy, by compar-
ison.” Now he was quiet, sad. His words settled among them like the ash that
had begun to drift, steady and slow, from Sam’s own wings. “As to the rest—
if I was God, the world would make me ill too.”

Simone Casalaro entered the lecture hall with great élan. Ninety-five pairs of eyes watched her
attentively. Ms. Casalaro’s Renaissance Literature class at Cornell University in Ithaca, New
York, was the most popular academic option on campus, and this was day one of Winter term.
She stomped snow from her galoshes and kicked them off, revealing a pair of Roman-style
sandals. Then she removed her full-length wool coat, showing off a fine Egyptian cotton dress
with a low bosom and high hemline. Appreciative male murmurs rippled through the room as
she eyed her troops for a few pregnant moments. Then, abruptly, she began.
“You will buy Dante’s Divine Comedy today and start reading it at once. Read every word.
Don’t skip the ‘boring bits.’ There are no boring bits in Dante. Turn off the television, put
your computer to sleep, take the iPod out of your ear. Open the actual book. Smell it. No

The stage door on her right was suddenly pulled open and a man, whose persona screamed
policeman, appeared.
“Professor Casalaro?”
Simone, lost in renaissance Italy, said, “May I help you, Condotierre?”
“I’m sorry to intrude, but I must speak with you.”
She looked at the clock. “I can see you in half an hour.”
The man gave her a heavy look. “I’m afraid it can’t wait.” Simone felt a chill. “All right, give
me two minutes.”
He nodded his head and closed the door.

• Co-op available
Dark and gritty, this no-holds-barred novel introduces P. I. Frank
Sullivan, a nasty S.O.B. with a sixth sense for the truth and escaping
tricky situations. When Misty Olsen walks into his office, it’s clear
she’s in trouble. She and her newborn baby girl are both HIV positive.
The boyfriend who infected her was not who she thought he was; she
never even knew his real name. The only things she knows for sure are
that it was no accident that she was infected, that she wasn’t his only
victim, and that he has to pay the consequences for what he did to her
and her child. To solve the mystery, Sullivan sets off on the long cold
trail of a man carrying something far more deadly than any contra-
band. He works his way through a tangled web of junkies, hookers,
bikers, and smugglers to find the culprit in this unpredictable mystery.
Mike Knowles is an elementary school teacher and author. His previ-
ous books include the Wilson Mystery series: Darwin’s Nightmare,
In Plain Sight, Never Play Another Man’s Game, and The Wilson

Excerpt:
Sullivan watched the door to the office open. Whoever was outside had knocked
twice. Sullivan ignored the knocks; he was reading the paper and could give a fuck
about whoever wanted inside. He figured the knocker had left after the second
attempt, but the moving door said different. Sullivan let his feet stay on the table
while his left hand drifted to the sawed-off baseball bat he kept leaning against the
desk. The last asshole who came in uninvited still had a tooth imbedded in the wood
of the bat. But there was no pimp looking for his money in the door this time.
Instead, there was a frail blonde woman in a long dress. The dress had a floral pat-
tern that had been faded by age and too many trips through the washing machine.
The blonde hair on her head was thin, dry, and brittle. The colour washed out her
skin and made the large bags under her eyes stand out. Sullivan figured he’d fuck her
with the lights out. The baby in her arms would have to wait in the next room.
“Excuse me,” the woman said.
“You don’t need one,” Sullivan said.
“Pardon?”
“An excuse. Just a reason for being here.”
“I’m looking for Frank Sullivan. Are you him?”
Sullivan stood. “If this is some kind of paternity thing, you’re in the wrong place.”

opportunity to leave New York and the haunting aftermath of two

hope this new beginning will be the antidote to Heather’s severe depres-

Jumping Fixes
Simple Solutions for Better Jumping
Performance in No Time
Wendy Murdoch
Better balance in the saddle, improved body control
from head to toe, and increased influence with your
seat are just a handful of the simple fixes offered in
this straightforward training manual for jumping.
Most of the suggestions provided within require only
a few minutes to learn and offer solutions for making
jumping more enjoyable for both riders and their
horses. Many of the lessons, such as using your body
to steer between fences, perfecting the crest release,
and counting strides and distances, can be broken
down into a series of smaller exercises that build
upon each other and can also be used as a warm up
or quick position check at the beginning of a ride. By
starting and ending each ride with these simple, easy,
and effective fixes, equestrians will happily and effi-
ciently replace old habits with new ones and get out
of their riding rut.

Cloning Cannabis
Here is a step-by-step method for cloning. It is simple and
consistent. All you need is a bag of sterilized soil and a bot-
tle of Rotenone or equivalent root growth stimulant.
Step 1: Select a cutting. You want a healthy piece, not
some scraggly piece. Snip it off at a 45 degree angle with
a razor blade.
Step 2: Remove the leaves and small side branches, leaving
a nice cluster at the top of the cut.
Step 3: Put the cut end into the rooting powder.
Step 4: Coat the stem with rooting powder and then shake
off the excess powder or gel.
Step 5: Make a hole in the prepared mix; make the hole big
so it won’t scrape the rooting hormone off.
Step 6: Place the cutting into the hole and pack the medium
gently around it.

Step 7: Using plain water, soak the cuttings in the soil.
Bigger roots lead to bigger yields.

Taking the position that America’s love affair with cars
and highways is not a cultural phenomena but an problem
that is entrenched in economic and political forces, this
manifesto chronicles the rise of the U.S. highway system,
its very orchestrated genesis, and the alarming increase in
reliance on automobiles. With a format that incorporates a
blend of cartoons, historic photographs, and minimal text,
this handbook reveals the players—among them crooked
politicians, unscrupulous businessmen, and convoluted tax shenanigans—corruption, and greed that has led to endless miles of
asphalt. In addition to analyzing the impact of the cultural bias towards driving and how driving became such a dominant mode
of transportation, this comedic treatise offers a blueprint for rebuilding a functional and sustainable public transportation system
that would bring wealth, happiness, and freedom.
Andy Singer is a cartoonist and illustrator whose drawings have appeared in numerous magazines and publications, including the
Boston Globe, Discover, Esquire, the New Yorker, the Saint Paul Pioneer Press, and the Washington Post. At its peak, his weekly,
self-syndicated comic strip, “No Exit,” ran in 24 papers. He is the co-chair of the Saint Paul Bicycle Coalition. He lives in Saint

With the help of groups like the Minnesota tax payers league, cars
have managed to twist language and public thinking. Gas taxes
and user fees pay just 60% of highway costs. The remaining 40%
is paid out of general fund tax revenue, largely out of cost savings
from Americans who don't own cars and the savings to cities from
lack of road wear, who save their cities around $1/mile everyday.
Conversely, making up the difference in road maintenance costs
each city hundreds of millions of dollars.
