total of four funerals and one memorial Mass, and in
the process have farewelled some long standing and

Death is one of those things that we can not escape

(alongwithtaxes!)butthenasChrisans,deathisnot
something we should be fearful of. It seems to me
however that we all too oen like to avoid having to
contemplate the reality of the end of life, and this
somemes means that we can be afraid of vising
friendswhoselovedonemayhavedied.

Unfortunately, such a development oen

(unintenonally) removes our friends and fellow
parishioners from the very support that they need in
the midst of their grief. As a community of faith,
surely our task, our responsibility, is to connue to
care for those who are grievingeven if this means
thatwehavetoconfrontourfearofdeath.
(Connued on page 2)
Our mission is to be an aeconate, caring, loving, faithlled Chrisan community,
growing as one through small groups.

I am oen askedin a variety of formswhy we cant
include some of the devoonal pracces in our
weekday or Sunday celebraons of Eucharist. Over the
coming weeks, and as part of our preparaon for the
Year of Grace, I would like to explore the relaonship
of the liturgy and the devoonal treasury of the
Church, in light of the Churchs teaching on this
subject.

Prayer is classically dened as liing mind and heart

to God. Thats a good denion, but it needs an
importantqualicaon.

Therearetwoessenalkindsofprayer:Somethingwe
call liturgical prayer, the public prayer of the church,
and something we call private or devoonal prayer.
Unfortunatelyweoenconfusethetwo.

For example, ve hundred people might be sing in

meditaon together in a church or praying the rosary
together at a shrine and this is sll private or
devoonal prayer. Conversely, someone might be
praying the Oce of the Church alone at home in an
armchairorapriestmightbecelebrangtheEucharist
alone at a kitchen table and this is public, liturgical
prayer. The disncon, as we see from these
examples, is not dependent upon the number of
people parcipang, or whether the prayer is taking
placeinachurch,orevenwhethertheprayerisbeing
prayedinagrouporprivately.Thedisnconisbased
uponsomethingelse.What?

Perhapsachangeofnamesmighthelpusunderstand
the disncon: Liturgical, public prayer might more
aptly be called priestly prayer, while private and
devoonal prayer might beer be termed aecve
prayer.
