we rejoice in the great gi that is the Resurrecon
that has given us our status as the Redeemed
stretches for another 50 glorious days. As we journey
through the Easter Season together it would be

ResurrectedChrist.

Secondly,thosewhowereattheEasterDawnService
last Sunday morning, gathering with their fellow
believers to witness to the glory of the Day of

Of all the visible symbols of Easter, the Easter or
paschal candle is by far the most important. Its rst

The pracce of inserng ve grains of incense and

having the deacon carry the candle in the procession
are menoned in the Ambrosian rite in the twelh
century. The custom of decorang the paschalcandle
with owers and inscripons, including the date, rst

ThesymboloftheEastercandleispowerfulbecauseit
appeals to our senses of sight, smell and touch. We
see the impressive candle and its ame, smell the

Thecandleisdecoratedwithacross,thenumeralsof

addions make the candle a kind of consecraon of
me, a reminder of the melessness of the paschal

Grains of incense are tradionally inserted into the

extremies of the cross to represent the wounds of
Christ: By his holy and glorious wounds, may Christ

Thepriestlightsthecandlefromthenewre,saying:
May the light of Christ rising in glory dispel the

our unity as the Body of Christ. As we light our small
candle from its ame, we are reminded that in the
Light of Christ we become the light of the world
ourselves.
