EE2092: Laboratory Practice IV

AC Energy Meter.

Instructed by: Mr. H.A.I. De Silva. Name Group Index No Field Date : : : : :

Theory:

The two alternating fluxes produced by the voltage coil and the current coil interact on the axially pivoted aluminium disc and produce a driving driving torque Td. By the principle of induction, Td Power in a.c. circuit Td VIcos( ) A control torque (Tc) is obtained by employing a permanent magnet to act as an eddy current brake on the aluminium disk. By the principle of eddy current breaking, Tc Angular speed of the disc Tc Ns (where Tc is energy meter Control Torque) (where Td is energy meter Driving Torque)

Therefore when the disc reaches its steady state speed Ns , T c = Td Ns VI cos( )

For a period of

, we can write, ( )

By integrating,

( )

n VI cos( ) T n = k VI cos( ) T k=
( )

(where k is energy meter constant)

Calculations. :
Let the time taken for n revolutions be T(sec) and the wattmeter reading be W (watts).

Measured meter constant = No. of revs per kwh =

(where n is taken as 1)

For example , if I = 1A , W = 150W , T = 36 s then,

Discussion.
In this practical several practical errors can be identified. Part of the errors has occurred due to assumptions, which we made. We assumed that the, Resistance of the wires was neglected. But they also have some amount of resistance. After some time supplying the power to the circuit Heat is generated in the components like rheostat and connecting wires. This causes to increase the resistance of the circuit and Rheostat. Error occurred when, taking Watt meter and Ammeter reading (Personal errors) For more accurate values the number of revolution considered should be a large value and the experiment should have been done for one value of ampere several times and the mean value of the time taken for these revolutions should be considered. Also the resistance of the connecting wires and the heating up of the variacs should also be considered. Also Readings must be correct. In electrical Distribution system Energy meter is essential equipment in each power users or consumers. Consumers should paid according to the number of unit indicating in Energy meter at the end of the month tariff is preparing according to the Energy meter. Therefore Energy meter should be calibrated in very accurate manner otherwise power supplying authority else consumer may in unfair condition.
