Focus/Review

Objective (as stated for students) Teacher Input

Content and Strategies The teacher will ask the students to list as many plants as they can. The teacher will remind the students to include plants that are grown for food, plants in the wild and decorative plants. As the students list the plants the teacher will write the plants on the board. Today we are going to learn how to identify the different parts of seed plant and each parts purpose. The teacher will refer to the list of plants on the board and tell the student that all of these plants are members of the plant kingdom. The teacher will then tell the students about the four types of organisms in the plant kingdom including algae, mosses and liverworts, ferns, and seed plants. The teacher will briefly explain the three groups included in the plant kingdom. The teacher will explain that the seed plant will be focused on for this lesson. Algae- are mostly one-celled green plants. Mosses and liverworts -grow close to the ground and do not have roots, stems, or leaves Ferns- are larger than mosses and liverworts and have roots, stems and leaves. Seed plants- make up the majority of plant life. The parts of the seed plant include: - Seed- contain an embryo capable of germinating and producing a new plant - Flower- produces cells that form seeds and allow a seed plant to reproduce - Stem- carries water, minerals, and food to different parts of the plant. The stems also support the leaves so they can be exposed to sunlight. - Leaf- produces the food used by the plant to build tissue and carry out life activities. Leaves also absorb the sunlight needed for making plant food for the plant. - Root- anchors a plant and absorbs, stores, and transports substances to other parts of the plant. The teacher will read the book from Seed to Plant by Gail Gibbons. While reading when the teacher reaches a point where the book is about to describe a plant part. The teacher will ask the class to describe the plant part and its purpose. After several students have answered the teacher will continue reading to see if the students were right. The teacher will continue this until she finishes the book. The whole class will discuss what was covered in the book.

Guided Practice

Independent Practice

For the independent practice the students will complete the worksheet Get Part Smart. (the worksheet is located in the artifacts tab) After the students complete the worksheet they will need to refer to the types of plants on the board and list five plants that fall into seed plants category.

Closure

Assessment

Materials

The teacher will bring the class back together and ask if anyone wants to share plants that they listed as seed plants. After a student shares a plant the class will then decide if it is a seed plant or belongs in a different category. The whole class will go through all of the plants on the board and circle the seed plants. The teacher will then ask if anyone can think of any other seed plants that were not listed on the board. Formative assessment The teacher will assess the Get Part Smart worksheet. In order to be proficient the student will need to score at least 6 out of 10. The worksheet is broken down into two sections matching the correct word with the definition and matching the correct picture with the definition. The student needs to receive at least 3 out of 5 for each section for a total of 6 out of 10 to master this concept. Things to Consider Each student will need a copy of the Get Part Smart worksheet. Color pencil or crayons to color the worksheet (if time permits) Glue sticks to glue the correct part of the plant beside the definition During the independent practice ELL students will be allowed to work in pairs and refer to a plant website that explains the plant part in Spanish. http://urbanext.illinois.edu/gpe/case1/c1facts2a.html AIG students will be required to use each plant part in a sentence that explains to purpose of the part. For example The roots of a plant are able to suck up water from under the ground.
