Reflection Letter
Reflection Letter
At the beginning of the semester, I expected just an ordinary English class where I would write essays on a book or short story. My expectations changed drastically over the semester. This class has delved deeper than I believed into my personal experiences with literacy instead of just writing generic essays. Literacy has changed in my eyes by expanding in many different ways. Literacy has changed from just reading and writing but to many different mediums such as using a picture to express thoughts or to tell a story. Literacy is everywhere and I did not realize it before. Before this course I thought that good writing was pretty much only writing that got published in some way. Now I think that good writing can include a rough draft or even branch into the different mediums like above. Throughout this course I made good and bad choices. For all of the pre-writing that I did I thought I did fine. I did all of the pre-writing and listened and participated some in class. However there were a few things that I definitely could have done better. I never really got around to seeking clarity or assistance to look over my drafts; I suppose I thought that after all of the pre-writing that was done that I was good to go in writing the paper. The second thing that I could have done better was to get to work on the final essay of the projects earlier. I thought with all of the pre-writing done and the research done that writing the essay would come easily and it really didnt.
The lesson that had the most impact me as a writer would have to be the lessons that taught me the history of my writing and the lessons that showed me my writing flaws. I have changed some of the flaws although I still have a ways to go. The main ways that I have grown as a writer is that I am using more specific examples such as the observations from my ethnography in my writing and that I have an overall stronger essay by fixing my weak points such as the opening paragraph. For my writing process the planning and pre-writing was a bare bones outline of the paper and what I want it to be. The first drafts are just putting everything on paper and then later drafts organize the paper and make it better. I learned that the best way for me to write is to get to the early draft as fast as possible; this gives me time to work on the paper and catch my mistakes through the revisions. I need to have the different stages looked over if at all possible. My strengths in writing are that when I use little narratives, they are usually strong. I have good sentence structure and a large vocabulary. The negatives are that I am not the best with commas. I sometimes write in a way where it is hard to tell what I am trying to say. My conclusion and my introduction are on the weak side. My weaknesses hinder my writing by making it harder to understand what I am trying to get across and are mostly things that could be changed fairly easily by reading the paper after I have finished it. The things that I could not pick out myself could probably be found by other people reading the paper. The most challenging assignments in class for me were the early assignments where I had to look into my past and remember everything about my literacy history and this was one of the most important assignments to me. This assignment let me realize where I came from as a writer. The assignment that fostered my growth the most was my revision of the Defense Essay. This forced me to meet my weaknesses head on. I focused on commas because I know that I do
not use them extremely well and tend to overuse them. I worked on the introduction and the conclusion because those two parts of the essay are also not that strong. I re-wrote the sentences that were not very clear to become easier to understand. I finally focused on getting more little narratives into the defense essay to make sure that the essay would be stronger. My writing has gotten stronger due to the class, my knowledge of literacy has expanded and many aspects of my writing have changed due to this class.
