Story Board

The document outlines how Disney princess stories are structured like storybooks in 5 frames or acts: 1) introduction of setting, 2) introduction of princess, 3) princess meets prince and falls in love, 4) prince saves princess from peril, 5) they live happily ever after. However, this structure promotes unrealistic expectations in young girls by depicting unattainable beauty standards, overdependence on romance and men, and an easy path to true love and happiness. More recent princess films attempt to counter some of these issues but don't fully avoid them.

Set

up Like A Story Book Frame 1: Once Upon a Time in a land far-far away Setting of Disney princesses in a land far-far away is negated by the fact that so many products are out that little girls feel like its realisticthey have unrealistic views of the world and cannot possibly meet their expectations. Visual: Opening scene of Snow White, Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella etc. Counter: Princess and the Frog, set in a real place, however, its still not a realistic depiction. Frame 2: There was a beautiful princess Princesses are shown with big eyes, tiny hips, and full hips This is an unrealistic depiction of women, unattainable, again sets up for failure Visual: Ariel, Cinderella, Tiana Counter: Brave Who dreamed and wished really hard for true love. -Im wishing, Snow White -A dream is a wish your heart makes - Frame 3: She meets Prince Charming, and its love at first sight Princesses entire lives are changed in a matter of seconds because of a man they dont even know. Doesnt show the realistic side of relationships, makes everything look extremely easy. Sets them up to expect someone to just come along and whisk them up. Romance central to storyline Visual: Cinderella, Sleeping Beauty, Little Mermaid (gives up her voice for him) Frame 4: Prince Charming saves her from peril Damsel in distress Dependence on men for everything
