CASE STUDY

Success story of Bangladesh Poultry Industries Association (BPIA), Sirajgonj


An association is a platform for collective approach and strength. Influenced by the concept Sirajgonj Zilla Poultry Malik Samity was formed in 2000. The key objectives to form the association were: poultry farmer can purchase inputs in reduced price with ensured quality, ensure competitive prices of their selling produces. Primarily the association was started with 75 member poultry farmers. Three tire committees like- Advisory council, Executive committee and Cabinet member were led the association with specific task and responsibilities. Advisory committee was responsible for developing association; executive committee was responsible for running and strengthening the association. Sirajgonj Zilla Poultry Malik Samittee was recognized by Dhaka central committee, Bangladesh Poultry Industries Association (BPIA) in 2006, then it renamed as Bangladesh Poultry Industries Association (B.P.I.A), Sirajgonj Zilla branch. In 2006, association obtained registration from the central committee of BPIA and it gives the association a greater legal status, improved their position with public and private institutions and increased acceptance among the local poultry farmers. Continuous demonstrated success of the association able to increased its members at 300 (180 layer, 100 broiler and 20 sonali farms). As part of the good management practices association committee conduct regular monthly meeting at Association office on several current issues like AI, high price of DOC, feed and medicine and forward linkages. Association is a platform from where poultry farmers deliver their massages, learn and share knowledge, informed about technical and marketing aspect, can use resources centre which belongs to them. IDE-AISD starts working with BPIA in 2007 concentrating on some specific technical assistances and supports. Initiated to improve members ability to understand input and output markets to improve negotiation skills for identifying quality inputs and access to output market, increase farms productivity using improved production knowledge and practices, and increased access to healthcare services. AISD emphasized on working with and through the private sector to improve the delivery of quality inputs and services to commercial poultry farmers. IDE, poultry association and private company (Novartis, Intervet and NAVANA) jointly organized training for lead farmers, Paravet and input sellers. Conduct technical sessions on commercial poultry farm and disease management in the association working area with the support of trained service providers. Total 32 lead farmers, 16 paravets and 15 input sellers are continuously providing services successfully among the members of the association and in the working area. With the help of association, IDE and healthcare company jointly organized three technical sessions and two best farm practices learning sharing sessions in association working area. From the training and technical sessions poultry farmers received a training hand book which is helping the farmers to learn and practice in their real life. Now the farmers are capable to select and maintain proper vaccination, knowledgeable on disease management and feed management which help them to increase productivity

and increased income. IDE supported them to established resource centre for knowledge and information, build capacity and service provision through training of lead farmers, paravets and input sellers, build capacity through technical sessions for association members, provided book shelf and learning materials to the association. Association led in several activities that show a positive leadership or organizing skills of the association. Due to series of activities and awareness campaign Sirajgonj district was declared as bird flu free zone in 2008. Among the initiatives Association and DLS jointly protect to import disease infested bird and egg in 2006 and burn 3000 disease infected bird with the help of administration. In last year, 2007 during heavy flood situation, association conduct survey and prepare a damage report on poultry sector and submitted in Government DLS and association jointly organized a mass gathering on AI issues Association communicated with different electric and print media and rose their concern and problem During flood period, association communicated with output market Dhaka with the help to sell egg and meat with competitive price

Association members now well linked with several input sellers directly and getting required services. Among the DOC and medicine companies farmers are currently communicating is-Paragon, Kazi, Aftab, CP, Biman, Victor, ACI, Nourish, Index); for feed (ACI, Paragon , Aftab, Nourish, CP, Quality, Teer, BRAC) and for medicine (Novartis, Renata, ACI, Navana, Square, Rampat, Advance, Jayson, Wills marketing company, FNF). It indicates that a positive linkages with service providers and self negotiation skills in selecting right quality inputs and services when they are in need. Future plan of the association is to run the disease diagnostic centre, to establish own sells centre and ensure that all members are trained on poultry farming.
