Stage 1 Identify Desired Results


Students will understand that: o The World Wide Web has expanded the way we access and use information. o Research requires planning in order to find the most relevant information for a research topic. o Using a variety of sources will enhance research for written assignments. o Print reference sources are not obsolete to online and electronic resources when researching for information on a specified topic. o In order for research to prove thorough and balanced, sources must well rounded.

Essential Questions
Overarching Questions: How is research and technology used to support writing? Topical Questions: 1). How are reference sources used in research writing and reporting? 2). How can reference sources be used together in writing? 3). How should writers use a thesaurus to improve their writing? 4). How do printed reference books differ from online/electronic references? 5). Should all information be in electronic form (available online or for download)? Why or Why not?

Stage 2 Evidence Performance Task(s)


Make-A-Vacay- (Understanding Facet (s): Application, Interpretation, Empathy, Perspective) Goal: Your goal is to create a travel brochure Role: You role is that of a professional travel agents Audience: Your clients are a family of 4: 2 adults and 2 children Situation: Students will chose a vacation destination for the fictional family Product Performance and Purpose: You will write an informative paper and create a persuasive brochure that details excursions, transportation, dining and accommodations, photos, and price rates from online sources such as Priceline.com and Hotwire.com in a well planned and organized manner. Your clients should have a 3-day detailed itinerary within their brochure featuring activities relative to all family members Standards and Criteria for Success: Your project will consist of two parts, a research paper and an actual brochure constructed from poster board .The 1 page research paper will be constructed in class through the Writing Process, Prewrite, Compose, Evaluate, Revise, Edit and Publish to be typed. Students will present their assignments to the class. Stage 3: Plan Learning Experiences


Week 1 Unit Launch: Pretest to determine student skill level and prior knowledge of content. Utilize Podcast for delivery of content instruction/introduction of curriculum goals. 1. Activating Strategies/Models: Students will explore the reference section of the Media Center through group activities. Students will identify the characteristics and usage of a variety of reference books while interacting with group members in a scavenger hunt activity. See Attached Handout

Closure: LESSON: Students will answer the essential question as well as name and describe three types of reference books discussed in the media center activity. 2. Process: (Readiness, Interest, or Learning Profile): Differentiation of process will be implemented to improve learning for multiple intelligences, special education, advanced learners and ESL learners in the following ways: *Teaching students how to use a wide range of product formats including print and online/web. *Provide bookmarked Internet sites at different levels of complexity for research sources. *Lead optional, in-class mini-workshops on various facets of product development (e.g., asking good research questions, using the Internet to find information, conducting interviews, proofreading). 3. Reference Materials
The books in the Reference section are the only books in the library that you can not check out. You are encouraged to use these resources all you want in the Media Center. Lets look at each of the major types of reference materials. On each table is a group of reference books. A different type of Reference book is on each table.
