Lessons from the 2012 Election

It is now clear that we are a divided nation. With around one hundred and three million votes cast, a slim margin separated the President from the Governor, ranking the election as the third closest in history, falling behind the 1960 election which put Kennedy in office and the 1880 election. Of course, the margin in the Electoral College was significant. The landscape has certainly changed, and there are lessons to be learned. Most who call themselves conservative Christians were Dr. Hayes Wicker shocked to realize how few people actually share our convictions about the social issues: marijuana usage, sameSenior Pastor sex marriage, and abortion. Tammy Baldwin became the first openly-gay candidate elected to the U.S. Senate. The whole concept of moral equivalence has been thrown up for grabs. The blatant promotion of socialism and government control, fueled by the healthcare mandate, has reminded us that we woke up on Wednesday morning realizing that we were not in the same country in which we were born. Many minority members and younger adults do not see these as crucial issues. The Pew Research Centers Forum on Religion and Public Life reveals that 25% of adults under age 30 are unaffiliated with any church, describing their beliefs as atheist, agnostic or nothing in particular. It is a great challenge to reach them, who constitute 80 million citizens in America. They are confident, connected, and diverse and will be the dominant adult population for the first half of the 21st century. I thank God for the biblically-grounded millenials in our church. These results point to the fact that churches have done a poor job of discipleship. The pulpit has by and large been silent concerning these issues, leaving the younger generation to be propagandized by the public schools and the media. Many professing Christians have cowardly refused to take a stand with their co-workers or families. We are rebuked for thinking that true change comes through political restructuring or law-making. Only God can open blind eyes by transformation and not information. The light always shines brightest during the darkest night. Bible-preaching churches have a new opportunity to declare hope. In due time we will reap if we do not grow weary (Galatians 6:9). We must walk as children of Light, for the fruit of the Light consists in all goodness and righteousness and truth (Ephesians 5:8 and 9). We must not compromise our message or methods just to win votes: Do not participate in the unfruitful deeds of darkness, but expose them (Ephesians 5:11). We must adapt our methods to have high-touch with truth with the younger high-tech generation. They will discover that we are a caring community that are not only full of truth, but also grace. May we continue to seek unity in ethnic diversity through the gospel of Christ since He died for all. Gods mosaic is multicolored, but it must allow the Light to shine through it. There is a rainbow of hope around the Throne of Grace.

On Wednesday, Jan 2, our Band of Brothers Mens Ministry and RefresHer Womens Ministry will gather together for a special movie night in the Worship Center at 6:30pm. DNOW 2013 - DNOW is coming soon! Sea Camp - FBAs 7th grade science class had the opportunity to explore Gods creation at Marine Lab in Key Largo, FL in October. During the course of three days, the students snorkeled in various ecosystems, participated in laboratory activities, and attended classes led by biologists. As the FBA students explored sea grass, mangroves, and coral reef ecosystems, their awareness of Gods creative power was greatly enhanced. Leading by Example - On Saturday, November 3, the FBA 5th grade leadership team partnered with FBCNs Soldier Care, to pack over 85 boxes for shipment to soldiers stationed in Afghanistan. Prior to packing, students enjoyed a behind the scenes tour of the Soldier Care display case in the FBCN Fellowship Hallway led by Tony Zawacky. A former US Marine shared his personal story and challenged FBA students to lead by example in serving others. American Heritage - We have initiated a series of teachings that will become a hallmark characteristic of FBA middle school academics. We are preaching and teaching from a rich biblical heritage to help our students understand American exceptionalism, the biblical principles of the Declaration of Independence, the US Constitution, and the biblical principles of Christian citizenship. First Baptist Academy - The Fine Arts Department at FBA is seeking string and band instruments for student use. If you have an instrument that is no longer in use, please consider donating it to the school. The greatest needs are for a tuba, cello, and marching snares with harness. Monetary donations are also accepted. Please contact the Fine Arts Director, Lani Mastrangelo, at 597-2233.
