Project name: Marvelous Magnetic Game Inventors Driving Question: How can I create a magnetic toy?

How can I explain what I know about magnets as a result of building this toy? Project idea: The seniors have a new facility and need games that will allow them to interact with others. In the role of an inventor, design a magnetic game in which seniors can play with one or more players. Prior to playing the game, you will pitch your game idea to the seniors describing how your games work and the rules. General Content (Outcomes) Science 1. Identify where magnets are used in the environment and why they are used. 2. Distinguish materials that are attracted by a magnet from those that are not. 3. Recognize that magnets attract materials with iron or steel in them; and given a variety of metallic and nonmetallic objects, predict those that will be attracted by a magnet. 4. Recognize that magnets have polarity, demonstrate that poles may either repel or attract each other, and state a rule for when poles will repel or attract each other. 5. Design and produce a device that uses a magnet. 6. Demonstrate that most materials are transparent to the effects of a magnet. A magnetic field will pass through such materials, whereas other materials interact with a magnet. 7. Compare and measure the strength of magnets Language Arts

3.4 share, with familiar audiences, ideas and information on topics

21 st Century component: Communication: learn, video, rehearsal, teaching presentation skills, using rubric to guide process

Major Student Projects: Inventor Journal to record learning, thoughts, ideas, sketches The Actual toy The Commercial, sales pitch, or `presentation to describe how the toy works

Audience - Feedback from another class in the school who play the game. - Formal intended audience will be seniors at West View Lodge.

The seniors have a new facility and need games that will allow them to interact with others. Nelly Nelson the West View Lodge Recreation Coordinator has written a letter asking for more games for seniors to play with guests and each other. In the role of an inventor, design a magnetic game in which seniors can play with one or more players. Prior to playing the game, you will pitch your game idea to the seniors describing how your games work and the rules. Questions from students about what we will need to learn before designing the toy (questions to be documented and answered throughout the task). Students can add to the list throughout the project (Can use KWL chart).

how are magnets used in our world? what materials attract or repel magnets? what are the properties of magnets? what kinds of games will we make? what is a sales pitch? How do I present this?

Day 2 -7: How can we go about finding out answers to our questions? ****talk about magnet safety *****/what about safety to seniors

videos books experts

exploration with magnets (book center, magnet art, magnet sets, youtube videos on our weebly o examination of magnetic games or toys that are already made *checkpoints: oral feedback to whole class about what they are learning, during this time teacher models presentation and listening skills. Inventorss Journal-each day they could draw a picture and/or words to show what they are learning about magnets

Day 8 How can we keep track of our ideas (Inventors Journal) (How will we teach and assess) Day 9: Take a look at magnetic games and discover how they work and what their purpose.. from there set the criteria for what makes a good game. Make the connection for why were using magnets....ie, for seniors when they were growing up they had simple materials and home made games. Day 10: Have kids use their inventors journal, discussions, look at examples for Leonard Da Vinci examples to begin drafting ideas for their game. *this will be another checkpoint : report out to class .ie make learning visible...Report out and get feedback about your design idea...first to a partner and then to the whole class. Be sure to look at criteria feedback developed earlier when giving and receiving feedback with classmates. Revise and reflect. Day 10 and 11....Design and Build the toy. Be sure to write your play instructions and share those with others as well. Day 12: Play the game with someone else and get feedback from them. Revise as necessary. Day 13: How can we pitch our ideas (how will we teach and assess) ie, look at examples of sales pitches, critique as a whole class to set criteria...practice for this will be done throughout the project. Students will report using criteria for communication with a focus on speaking skills and organization of ideas...ie. Why they chose the materials they did? Which magnetic properties are being utilized or demonstrated?

streaming videos, class weebly Exemplars like Leonardo Da Vincis journal, Youtube videos for sketching, blueprints, keep materials list Samples of scientific journals, Materials, collaboration and building time

Specific lessons using exemplars from youtube and teacher lessons. Speaks clearly; not too fast or too slow, speaks loudly enough for everyone to hear, stays on topic Fishbowl technique (inner circle models while outer circle critiques)

How to give and receive feedback

Group product: possibly in centers students have a magnetic challenge and have to build or use the magnet in a specific way and report out collaborating with their groups. The student will record this as one of their first activities in the inventors journal. The selfassessment collaboration rubric will be included in the inventors journal.
