Year of Faith Holy Hour

The first step in growing as faithful Christians is to develop our prayer life, both as individuals and as a community. To help in this growth, we will begin offering weekly Holy Hours at St. Marys on Thursday evenings at 7 PM. These Holy Hours will include Holy Mass, Exposition of the Blessed Sacrament, devotional prayer and Benediction, as well as time for silent prayer before Our Lord in the Blessed Sacrament. I hope you will be able to join us for the first Holy Hour, which will be held on Thursday, November 8th at 7 PM!

Please consider donating to the Seminarian Education Endowment Fund

The Catholic Extension Society is providing a matching grant of up to $50,000 until December 31, 2012 to help fund the education of future priests within our diocese. Mardi Gras/Spring Fling Quilt Donations

Thank you to everyone who has contributed to help defray the costs of making the new quilt for our 2013 raffle. As stated in the previous notice, our expenses were nearly $300 and we are still $115 short of that goal. I would encourage those who have not yet donated to help out so that we can reach that goal. Thank you in advance for your generosity and thank you again to those who have already donated.

Stewardship and Development

Stewardship Thought: The theme of loving God fully with all our heart, soul, mind, and strength echoes throughout the First Reading and St. Marks Gospel. When Jesus is questioned in the Gospel, He quotes directly from the Book of Deuteronomy about fully loving God as the First Commandment, with the Second being love of neighbor. Through our discipleship, we, as Christian stewards, embrace both of these Commandments as the foundation for making stewardship a way of life. Development Thought: Its true. Being generous with our time, talent and treasure is a gift to God. HE is the source of every good thing in our lives. Our salvation! What we can do is offer the blessings in our lives back to Him, with hearts full of love and gratitude and a sincere desire to further His Kingdom. Thank you, Lord!

CD of the Month Club

If we are to be followers of Jesus Christ, we need to be continually learning about the faith and growing spiritually. Catechesis, the process of Faith education, doesnt stop at Confirmation or High School graduation, but is a life-long process. To aid in this process, the parish is making available the Lighthouse Catholic Media CD of the Month Club. Every month, a new talk or audiobook excerpt is released. Not only is the current months CD available - The Best Way to Live by Matthew Kelly - but a number of previous months CDs can be picked up as well. Each CD averages about 1 hour long, and is filled with great Catholic teaching, uplifting stories, and excellent speakers. Theyre great in the car, working around home, or anywhere you have a CD player! Theyre also excellent resources whenever someone has a question about a teaching of the Catholic Faith. If you or someone you know wants to learn more about the Catholic Faith, or if questions come up, pick one up today!

Faithful Citizenship Quote

"Some Catholic elected officials have adopted the argument that, while they personally oppose evils like abortion, they cannot force their religious views onto the wider society. This is seriously mistaken on several key counts. First, regarding abortion, the point when human life begins is not a religious belief but a scientific fact -- a fact on which there is clear agreement even among leading abortion advocates. Second, the sanctity of human life is not merely Catholic doctrine but part of humanity's global ethical heritage, and our nation's founding principle. Finally, democracy is not served by silence. Most Americans would recognize the contradiction in the statement, "While I am personally opposed to slavery or racism or sexism I cannot force my personal view on the rest of society." Real pluralism depends on people of conviction struggling vigorously to advance their beliefs by every ethical and legal means at their disposal" (US Bishops, Living the Gospel of Life, 1998, n. 24).

Mass Intentions
As Catholics, we have a long tradition of having Masses celebrated for those we wish to offer up in prayer. The Mass is the ultimate form of prayer, and each Mass is celebrated for an intention. Please consider having Masses celebrated for family and friends on special occasions and anniversaries, as well as those who are in need of prayers. Masses are also encouraged in memory of those loved ones who have died, especially on the anniversaries of their deaths. Contact Fr. Cory for more information!

Care Cups
Please donate coffee cups/mugs to the church basement for use in providing Care Cups. Sacred Heart PCCW Meeting

We Pray Together
Prayer for the New Evangelization
Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved. But how can they call on him in whom they have not believed? And how can they believe in him of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone to preach? And how can people preach unless they are sent? Romans 10: 13-15 Heavenly Father, Pour forth your Holy Spirit to inspire me with these words from Holy Scripture. Stir in my soul the desire to renew my faith and deepen my relationship with your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ so that I might truly believe in and live the Good News. Open my heart to hear the Gospel and grant me the confidence to proclaim the Good News to others. Pour out your Spirit, so that I might be strengthened to go forth and witness to the Gospel in my everyday life through my words and actions. In moments of hesitation, remind me: If not me, then who will proclaim the Gospel? If not now, then when will the Gospel be proclaimed? If not the truth of the Gospel, then what shall I proclaim? God, our Father, I pray that through the Holy Spirit I might hear the call of the New Evangelization to deepen my faith, grow in confidence to proclaim the Gospel and boldly witness to the saving grace of your Son, Jesus Christ, who lives and reigns with you, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Prayer for Religious Liberty

O GOD OUR CREATOR, from your provident hand we have received our right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. You have called us as your people and given us the right and the duty to worship you, the only true God, and your Son, Jesus Christ. Through the power and working of your Holy Spirit, you call us to live out our faith in the midst of the world, bringing the light and the saving truth of the Gospel to every corner of society. We ask you to bless us in our vigilance for the gift of religious liberty. Give us the strength of mind and heart to readily defend our freedoms when they are threatened; give us courage in making our voices heard on behalf of the rights of your Church and the freedom of conscience of all people of faith. Grant, we pray, O heavenly Father, a clear and united voice to all your sons and daughters gathered in your Church in this decisive hour in the history of our nation, so that, with every trial withstood and every danger overcome for the sake of our children, our grandchildren, and all who come after us this great land will always be one nation, under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all. We ask this through Christ our Lord. Amen.

A Family Prayer for the Year of Faith

O God our Father, in Jesus you call all Christian families and homes to be signs of living faith. By the light of the Holy Spirit, lead us to be thankful for the gift of faith, and by that gift may we grow in our relationship with Jesus, your Son, and be confident witnesses to Christian hope and joy to all we meet. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

RELIGIOUS FREEDOM
USCCB Nationwide Bulletin Insert September-October 2012

P RAYER AND A CTION ARE N ECESSARY TO K EEP O UR F IRST F REEDOM F IRST

When Pope Benedict visited the United States in 2008, he asked the U.S. bishops a question: Is it consistent to profess our beliefs in church on Sunday, and then during the week to promote business practices or medical procedures contrary to those beliefs? The Holy Father then answered his own question: Any tendency to treat religion as a private matter must be resisted. Only when their faith permeates every aspect of their lives do Christians become truly open to the transforming power of the Gospel. Although the full impact of the Holy Fathers words might not have been understood then, they have since proven prophetic. The Pope was challenging Catholics in the United States to resist the growing pressure to confine religious beliefs to houses of worship and to prevent the Church and individual believers from living out their faith in their day-today work and care for others. The U.S. bishops have since raised numerous concerns over the increasing threats to religious freedom, especially the now-finalized rule of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), which would force virtually all private health plans nationwide to provide coverage of sterilization and contraceptionincluding abortifacient drugs. While there is an exemption for certain religious employers, it only covers employers that serve people of their own faith. Jesus and his apostles would not qualify. Mother Teresa would not qualify. As the bishops noted in their statement, United for Religious Freedom, this is an extremely narrow and unprecedented federal definition of religion, resulting in coercion to act against our teachings and the violation of civil rights. Federal law has long been generous in protecting the rights of individuals and institutions to not to act against their religious beliefs or moral convictions. Is that now changing? Are we entering a time when the federal government may now force the Churchconsisting of its faithful and all but a few of its institutionsto act against Church teachings? While we seek remedies from the White House, Congress, and the courts, the U.S. bishops have called upon the Catholic faithful, and all people of faith, throughout our country to join in prayer and penance for our political leaders, and for the complete protection of our first freedomreligious liberty. Prayer is the ultimate source of our strengthfor without God, we can do nothing; but with God, all things are possible.

What can you do to help protect religious freedom?
