Description In this activity, students answer questions to get an overview of the Listening paper. They also complete a matching task to find out about the types of task in the test. This activity can be used at the beginning of a preparation course and/or just before the exam.
15 minutes Handout: (page 1: one copy per student; sample paper and Tapescript: one copy per pair of students) to familiarise students with the content of the whole listening paper; the number, the types of text, the types of task and marking.
Procedure 1. As a lead in, ask students what they like listening to in English. Elicit things like songs, stories, jokes, films, interviews with film stars, the news, etc. The idea is to show how much fun and how much information they can get by being able to understand the English they come across. 2. Explain that you are going to introduce the Listening paper. 3. Give out the sample Listening paper, question paper only, to pairs of students. 4. Before you give out page 1 of the Overview handout, read out Section 1, questions 14 one by one. Ask students to find the answers in the sample question paper. Elicit the answers (see key) and write them up on the board in a simple form. The idea here is that by reading out the questions before you give students the handout, you activate students listening skills. This will help to prepare them for the listening tasks. 5. Give out page 1 of the Overview handout and ask students to copy the answers to questions 1-4 from the board onto the handout. 6. Hand out the tapescript. 7. Read out questions 57 about the tapescript and check that students understand the questions. Ask them to find the answers in pairs in the tapescript. 8. Check the answers to question 57 (see key). 9. For question 8, if your students do not know the terms gap-fill, multiple choice and matching, use the sample paper to show them what these tasks are or translate them into the students mother tongue if necessary. Answer question 8 together as a whole class. If you think they may know the terms or be able to guess, let them try on their own first. 10. Check the answers to question 8 (see key). 11. Ask students to talk about the questions in Section 2 on the handout in pairs first. Then talk about the answers together as a whole-class activity. This task is designed to give students time to absorb what they have to do in the listening test. Although there are no right or wrong answers here, many candidates recognise that there is progression across the test. This means that most candidates find Part 1 the easiest and Part 4 and

5, where they have to read, listen and write, the most difficult. The visuals in Part 1 appeal to many candidates and help them get started on the Listening test. Which texts/topics are interesting will be a matter of personal preference. Key 1. There are 25 questions (one mark per question; the listening test represents 25% of the total marks for the whole KET test). 2. In Part 1, candidates choose the correct answer by ticking a box next to a letter (A, B or C) on the question paper as they listen. In Part 2, they write a letter (A-H) in each box. 3 In Part 3, candidates tick the correct answer (A, B or C). (At the end of the test candidates have eight minutes to transfer their answers onto the answer sheet. For Parts 1, 2 and 3 they shade in the correct lozenge on the answer sheet in pencil.) 4. In Parts 4 and 5 candidates write one or two words or a number. (Recognisable spelling is accepted except for very high frequency words, e.g. bus, or if spelling is dictated.) 5. Part 5 has only one speaker. 6. All other parts have two speakers. In Part 1, candidates listen to short neutral or informal dialogues, in Part 2 to a longer informal dialogue, in Parts 3 and 4 to a longer neutral or informal dialogue. This range of text types means that students are exposed to a variety of real-life listening situations and are tested on a range of listening skills. In dialogues students have not only to listen for the answer but in some cases also to listen for who gives the answer. 7. Part 3 (multiple choice) is slightly longer than Parts 2, 4 and 5. This means that candidates have to concentrate for longer and follow the ideas or information throughout the whole text. 8. This is the Cambridge Key English Test Listening Test, Sample Paper 2. There are five parts to the test. Parts One, Two, Three, Four and Five.

In Hall 2, you can find lovely cakes and bread. And next to this hall there is a caf. You can get sandwiches, snacks and drinks all day in the caf, and a hot breakfast until 11.30. Hall 3 is the biggest hall and sells cheese, eggs and meat. In this hall there is also a special Italian shop. You can buy different pasta and they make pizza daily. At 55p a piece, it's not expensive. Children will love our new playroom. It's at the end of the hall next to the telephones. You can leave them there safely when you shop. Happy shopping!
