support

for the

major puBlished prediCtion standards

Lambda Predict supports the major reliability prediction standards and makes it possible to mix and match components analyzed with different standards when applicable. With the new "Generic" system type, you can even create a single electromechanical system analysis that contains some subsystems analyzed with MIL-217 or Bellcore/Telcordia and others analyzed with NSWC Mechanical.

MIL-HDBK-217F
Reliability Prediction of Electronic Equipment (MIL-HDBK-217F), issued by the U.S. Department of Defense in December, 1991. This standard provides reliability prediction models for electronic components in commercial and military applications. Support for Both Part Stress and Parts Count Analyses In addition to providing full support for the MIL-217 Part Stress calculation method, the software also includes a library database with nearly 3,000 components that can be used to quickly create a MIL-217 Parts Count prediction. This analysis approach may be applicable during bid proposals and early design phases when sufficient information is not available to use other methodologies. Ability to Define Custom Connections The software supports the connection types specified in the MIL-217 standard (e.g. Reflow Solder, Spring Contact, etc.) and also allows you to define your own custom factors that describe the effect of the connection type on the failure rate of the assembly. Non-Operational Phases For MIL-217 analyses, the software allows you to specify separate parameters that apply to the item during non-operational phases and automatically calculates the quiescent failure rate.

Bellcore/Telcordia

Updated edition of the standard now supported in Version 3!

Reliability Prediction Procedure for Electronic Equipment (SR-332 Issue 2), issued by Telcordia Technologies in September, 2006. This standard provides reliability prediction models for electronic components in commercial applications, including updated component failure rates and the ability to calculate the upper bound for the failure rate at different confidence levels. Lambda Predict also supports two previous versions of the standard: TR-332 Issue 6, issued by Bell Communications Research in 1997, and SR-332 Issue 1, issued by Telcordia Technologies in 2001.

NSWC Mechanical

Updated edition of the standard now supported in Version 3!

The Handbook of Reliability Prediction Procedures for Mechanical Equipment (NSWC-07), issued by the Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division on July 31, 2007. This standard provides reliability prediction models for mechanical components, such as seals, springs, pumps, valves, brakes and more.

to

Build system Configurations

All the Tools You Need to Build Simple or Complex System Configurations
The first step in performing a standards based reliability prediction analysis is to build a configuration that represents your system. Lambda Predict makes it easy to build system configurations by adding blocks and components into a flexible hierarchical tree structure. The building blocks for your system configurations include:

Blocks represent groups of blocks or components in the next lower level of the system hierarchy. This allows you to build multi-level system configurations with an unlimited number of indenture levels and an unlimited number of items per level. Components represent individual items (such as fuses, capacitors, valves, springs, etc.) with configurable properties that are determined based on the selected reliability prediction standard. External Components allow you to include the failure rates for parts that are not addressed in the selected reliability prediction standard. Linked Blocks represent the characteristics of other blocks or components. This provides another way to incorporate components that were analyzed with another standard and also allows you to update identical parts with a single action. Special Blocks/Assemblies have been designed to meet the specific analysis requirements for each particular standard. For example, you can take advantage of predefined pump, motor and other assemblies for NSWC analyses. For MIL-217 analyses, the software provides special blocks to represent hybrid microcircuits or different PCB interconnection methods such as plated through holes or surface mount technologies.

By default, the software assumes a series configuration of the components but the Redundancy option makes it possible to define simple parallel or k-out-of-n configurations. The Update Children feature makes it easy to change an application property for a block (e.g. temperature) and automatically update all of the items below. You have the option to make the settings identical or increment each item's setting by the same amount.

Different Views to Facilitate Data Entry and Decision-Making

Enhanced in Version 3!

Lambda Predict offers four different views of the analysis data and makes it easy to switch between views depending on the task that you are performing.

The Tree View organizes item properties into a hierarchical structure, which makes it easy to view and edit all of an item's properties in a single display. The Tab View organizes item properties on separate tabs (e.g. General, Physical, Application, etc.), which may feel more comfortable for some types of data entry. The Grid View can display the properties for multiple items simultaneously in a tabular grid. This can provide a fast and easy way to view and edit the settings for all of the items in a particular assembly. The Pi Factor View organizes item properties based on the Pi Factor(s) that they contribute to. This makes it possible to visualize and understand exactly how the settings you have defined will affect the calculated failure rate.

flexiBle data management CapaBilities

The analyses that you perform with Lambda Predict will be stored in relational database files, which makes it possible for you to take advantage of many useful data management capabilities. This includes the ability to query data, the ability to sort and present data in a variety of different ways and the ability to easily duplicate or transfer data when needed.

Using Databases, Projects and Predictions to Organize Analysis Data

The software provides flexible options for you to organize and manage your analysis information in ways that will help you to achieve your particular goals. For example, the option to store multiple "predictions" per database and multiple "systems" per prediction makes it possible to:

Keep the analyses for multiple revisions of a design together so that you can track your progress during the course of the product development lifecycle. Perform what-if scenarios by duplicating an analysis and changing selected parameter(s) in order to compare the results. Create a single prediction for an electromechanical system that includes electronic components analyzed with the MIL-217 or Bellcore/Telcordia standards and mechanical components analyzed with NSWC.

Importing Parts from Bill of Materials (BOM) Data Files

Because we understand that importing system configuration data from an external Bill of Materials data file can provide a significant head-start for performing a reliability prediction analysis, Lambda Predict's Import Wizard makes it easy to import data from Microsoft Excel or delimited text files. For maximum flexibility and to save time for future imports, the wizard guides you through the process to build your own template that maps the information from your file to the data fields that are supported by the software. You can save and reuse this template for other data sets that follow the same file structure.

Easy to Import/Export or Copy/Paste Between Lambda Predict Analyses

When you want to reuse information from an existing Lambda Predict analysis, the software provides a quick and easy tool that allows you to browse through the available information and select the items that you wish to import from another database. You also have the option to open multiple predictions at the same time and easily copy and paste information between analyses.

Utilize Prepared Component Libraries and/or Build Your Own

Lambda Predict's library functionality can be a great way to share knowledge, achieve consistency and save time on data entry. The software comes with sample data files and also makes it easy to build and distribute your own custom libraries. The free libraries shipped with the Lambda Predict include:

MIL-HDBK-217F Parts Count Components - components for MIL-217 parts count predictions. This includes microcircuits, diodes and other discrete semiconductors, resistors and capacitors, as well as other inductive, electromechanical and miscellaneous parts. MIL-M-38510 - integrated circuit (IC) components.

In addition, the Web portal at PartLibraries.org facilitates the collection and dissemination of component data for use in standards based reliability predictions and other analyses. All Lambda Predict users receive free access to the IC component definitions published in MIL-M-38510, the electronic component failure rates published in EPRD-97 (Electronic Parts Reliability Data) and the mechanical, electrical and electromechanical component failure rates published in NPRD-95 (Nonelectronic Parts Reliability Data). ReliaSoft also offers a yearly subscription-based service that provides unlimited access to the full parts library. With an active subscription, you will be able to find and import data for more than 300,000 commercial electronic components with reliability prediction parameters predefined based on the published manufacturer spec sheets.

Find and Add Predefined Components

Enhanced in Version 3!

Lambda Predict provides two easy-to-use utilities that allow you to search for existing components and automatically import selected data into your analysis. One utility allows you to search for data within an existing prediction analysis, a selected library database or the Web portal at PartLibraries.org. With this tool, you have the option to query by up to 3 properties using the Boolean operators AND and OR. For example, it's easy to search for components where the Name contains "abc" AND the Supplier contains "efg" OR the Supplier contains "xyz." A second utility has been designed specifically for searching the data in PartLibraries.org. With this flexible tool, you can filter by category, part number, supplier, part name and/or part description. The results provide the component failure rate or the reliability prediction parameters required by the standard. When applicable, the portal also provides additional component details obtained from the manufacturer's spec sheets, which can be useful when comparing and selecting parts for a new design.

Complete array

of

analysis results, plots

and

reports

Failure Rates, MTBFs, Pi Factors and Other Calculated Results

Lambda Predict automatically calculates a complete array of results from your reliability prediction and derating analyses. Depending on the prediction standard that you are using, this may include:

Failure Rate (at the specified Mission Time) Steady-State Failure Rate (i.e. Failure Rate when the Mission Time is equal to infinity) Standard Deviation and Upper Confidence Bound for Steady-State Failure Rate Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) Contribution (made by the item to the Failure Rate of its direct parent) Unreliability (at the specified Mission Time) Early Life Factor (the ratio of the item's Early Life Failure Rate to its Steady-State Failure Rate) Non-Operational Failure Rate Derating Status (not stressed, exceeds nominal or stressed)
Enhanced in Version 3!

Graphical Plots and Charts

Lambda Predict provides a complete array of plots and charts to demonstrate your analysis graphically. This includes plots for Failure Rate, MTBF, Mission Time and Unreliability (plotted independently and versus Temperature, Environment, Stress, etc.). The Plot Setup gives you full control over the display settings and all plot graphics can be saved as *.jpg, *.gif, *.png or *.wmf files and inserted into other reports and presentations. With the release of Version 3, you now have the option to create plots that present data from more than one system analysis. We have also added the ability to save the plot with the project (including all settings and a direct link to the original data source).

Template-Based Reports

Easier to Use in Version 3!

Lambda Predict gives you the ability to generate template-based reports to present your analysis results or to export data into a desired format. Reports are generated in Microsoft Excel, which provides maximum flexibility for additional customization and distribution. You can adjust the appearance of all predefined reports and also build and manage your own custom report templates to include information about Failure Rates, Application Parameters, Physical Parameters, Pi Factors, etc.

derating analysis
Derating Analysis

and

reliaBility alloCation

Most equipment failures are precipitated by stress. When the applied stress exceeds the inherent strength of the part, either a serious degradation or a failure will occur. Derating analysis helps with the selection of parts and materials so that the applied stress is less than rated for a specific application. When you are working with a MIL-217 or Bellcore/Telcordia system in Lambda Predict, you can select from the available published derating standards or define your own. Once a derating standard has been applied, each component in the system is automatically evaluated to determine whether it meets the derating requirements defined for its component type in the standard. The software provides visual indicators within the system configuration and also makes it easy to access more details or generate plots. The available derating standards are:

NAVSEA-TE000-AB-GTP-010 issued by the Naval Sea Systems Command in March 1991. MIL-STD-975M (NASA) issued by the U.S. National Aeronautics and Space Administration in 1994. MIL-STD-1547 issued by the U.S. Department of Defense in November 1998. Naval Air System Command AS-4613 issued by the U.S. Naval Air Systems Command in 1976. ECSS-Q-30-11-A issued by the European Cooperation for Space Standardization in April 2006.
